Microbiologist Al-Timimi, sentenced to life plus 70 years, had a high security clearance for work for the Navy. He worked in the building housing the Center for Biodefense. He shared a fax number famed Russian bioweaponeer Ken Alibek and former USAMRIID head Bailey, who is a listed author now on many articles involving the Ames strain of anthrax. At one point, Ali’s office was not much more than 15 feet away from both. NSA intercepts in 2002 show Al-Timimi was communicating with his former mentor, Bin Laden’s sheik, Al-Hawali. The Washington Post first revealed the FBI suspected him of involvement in the anthrax mailings in September 2006, although it does not seem that he could have been either the processor or mailer. Instead, it seems that it is potential access to know-how that drew investigators’ attention. He was more of a “numbers guy” rather than someone with hands-on drying expertise.

One would expect such a national security and criminal investigation to be confidential, with information withheld.
