Ron Paul Turnout May Shock the Iowa Caucus

“Listen. Do you want to know a secret? Do you promise not to tell?” No, it’s not the lyrics to the famed Beatles song. This is deep politics and strategy. What has seemed for so long to be a far-distant Iowa caucus is now about to arrive in less than a month. First, the secrets. There are plenty of people who’ve worked in presidential campaigns, or who have deep knowledge of how the system works.
For them, this will not come as a great surprise, especially for those who are familiar with the old term “street money.” They’ll know that street money was used primarily in Southern or big-city elections in the past. Maybe it won’t come as a surprise, either, that there has also been a more quietly kept tradition of “cash for a vote” in past Iowa contests.
Here’s how it has worked in some instances: Potential voters were recruited by deep-pocketed campaigns, often from states other than Iowa. They were put on buses to be delivered to the appointed caucus locations.
While Iowa has taken measures to end the “invasion” of out-of-state participants in this year’s caucus, it’s unlikely that the use of “gratuities” by at least one or two campaigns will come to an end.
Is there proof positive, a smoking gun or a photo of $100 exchanging hands for any voter’s participation? Absolutely not. But then again, there has never been that same evidence for the widely accepted fact that payment of voters in the Southern and big-city races has taken place. But it has.
The real problem this go-round is that some of the big-money candidates have squandered their cash. One wonders whether their campaigns, or their friends, have managed to hold on to enough loot to provide the presents and gratuities necessary to pull otherwise uninterested voters out of their homes, to force them to remain locked in some community center, where they must listen to advocates for candidates and remain firmly entrenched in the corner of the facility until their candidates’ votes are finally counted.
And, of course, those buses are less likely this time to be carrying any shipment of “Iowans” who just happen to reside outside the state. In other words, it may well be that just as “street money” is a dying tradition in the South, its Midwestern equivalent is dying off as well.
Let me make it clear: This past practice was not limited to one political party. More importantly, those in the know in Iowa plan to be on high alert for indications of gratuity incentives that might be used to increase voter turnout in January.
And that brings me to what I increasingly believe will be the “shocker” in the Iowa caucus. Let me make it clear that my vague description of activities above has nothing to do with the prediction I’m about to make.
As I’ve written in prior columns, I find it hard to believe that massive numbers of voters returning from their New Year’s celebrations — in a state where it gets dark at 4:30 p.m. and is likely to be very cold — will be compelled to leave the toasty confines of their homes and abandon watching the Orange Bowl game in order to vote in a caucus.
Under this theory, turnout will be impossible to predict. There are many theories that I’ve already explored about which candidates, of both major parties, might benefit from this quirky set of circumstances created by the move of the Iowa caucus to Jan. 3. But the one candidate I believe could benefit above all others will be GOP candidate Ron Paul. Iowa political insiders I’ve talked to agree.
After covering the public appearances of various presidential candidates on the Republican side, and even participating in the seemingly secure atmosphere of a post-debate media “spin room,” I have been amazed at the zeal of Ron Paul supporters to appear in huge numbers.
What received little coverage out of last week’s CNN-YouTube debate in Florida was that the biggest demonstration outside the hall was a parade of Paul supporters. Inside the spin room, where credentialed journalists and, now, bloggers are allowed to interview candidates and their surrogates, a seemingly unknown but large group of “reporters” surrounded Paul.
At a recent Rudy Giuliani rally, the Paul supporters virtually outnumbered the Giuliani crowd.
All of this tells me that what looks like 6 percent of the vote for Paul in states like Iowa could easily, especially where turnout is low, move toward double digits. From what my friends in Iowa are telling me, Huckabee or some other candidate may emerge the winner, but the big story that night may be that the contrarian Paul could find himself placing ahead of some really big names. Time will tell.

Ron Paul Wins Virginia Straw Poll
Tyler Whitley
Richmond Times Dispatch
December 2, 2007
ARLINGTON — Texas Rep. Ron Paul easily won a presidential poll at a Republican Party of Virginia conference here yesterday.
Paul polled 182 out of about 500 votes cast. Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson finished second with 112 votes, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee finished third with 51 votes.
The straw poll was held at the 24th annual Republican Advance, generally attended by activists and grass-roots workers, at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City Hotel in the Washington suburbs.
Republican officials dismissed the poll’s outcome, noting that Paul has been concentrating on winning straw polls all over the country.
Paul bused in young supporters. They waved signs and shouted loudly when his name was mentioned.
“He brought people in here. What is more critical to look at is who finished second and third. That is a more true indicator of the feelings of the Republican Party of Virginia,” said Tucker Watkins of Randolph in Charlotte County, a former 5th District GOP chairman.
Virginia Republicans and Democrats will each hold presidential primaries on Feb. 12. Because several other states have earlier votes, many observers think the nominees of the two parties will be decided by the time Virginians choose.
The major candidates, occupied in Iowa or New Hampshire where the earliest nominating contests will be held, sent surrogates yesterday.
The meeting brought good news for former Gov. Jim Gilmore, who is seeking the party’s nomination to run for the U.S. Senate. A prospective opponent, Del. Christopher B. Saxman of Staunton, said he would not seek the nomination. He said he would not be able to raise money while the General Assembly is in session this winter and so would not be able to mount a credible candidacy.
Del. Robert G. Marshall of Prince William has hinted that he might run, but he did not show up and had a friend read a statement prepared by him which indicated he likely would not run.
Gilmore in a brief speech to the Republicans, urged against defeatism and said he could beat former Gov. Mark R. Warner, a Democratic candidate for the seat now held by Republican Sen. John W. Warner, who is retiring.
“We’ve won two statewide contests [attorney general and governor], we’ve carried Northern Virginia twice,” Gilmore said.
Media Getting Wind of Ron Paul Blimp

It was bound to happen. The mainstream media are starting to get wind of the Ron Paul Blimp. Yes, you read that correctly — a blimp. In case you have been hiding under an Internet boulder, Ron Paul’s wildly creative and resourceful supporters have been up to their old tricks again, much to the dismay of leftists around the country. I’m sure the neocons at Redstate will have their fun with this one, too — they surely miss the traffic now that they’ve banned Ron Paul supporters from posting anything about the candidate on their blogs. Ron Paul? Das ist verboten! But back to the dirigible: a blimp is born, and his name is Who is Ron Paul?
The Los Angeles Times published a piece today called “Foot Soldiers for the Ron Paul Revolution.” Yes, you read that correctly: the L.A. Times actually referred to the revolution as just that, a revolution. In the article they mention the Ron Paul Blimp as part of a laundry list of decentralized campaign achievements at the grassroots level: “One Colorado backer quickly raised more than $350,000 online this week, with a plan to launch a Ron Paul blimp.”
Who in the old media will be next to discover the airborne Paulmobile? We’ll be waiting…

Ron Paul’s 30th Drive Reaches More Than Half a Million
The Rudy’s Reading List money “bomb-let” won’t produce the kind of numbers that the 5th of November money bomb produced, but it’s creating a nice little fundraising tweener for the Ron Paul campaign.

November 30, 2007
Halfway through the day today, there has been a definite jump in donations for the Ron Paul campaign. According to this graph at Ron Paul Graphs, donations for the first half of the day are about $200,000 higher than normal. The counter at Rudy’s Reading List shows about 2,300 committed donors. Since the 5th of November money bomb produced total revenue of $4.3 million from roughly 20,000 committed donors (plus an additional 20,000 or so who didn’t commit via the website) a reasonable extrapolation would suggest that $430,000 might be expected from today’s money bomb-let.
While well below what organizers of today’s fundraiser were hoping for, it’s still a respectable number. For contrast, consider that Howard Dean’s best fundraising day in 2004 was $700,000, so the Rudy’s Reading List bomb-let is still in very respectable company as far as online political fundraising goes. Also, there is very little doubt that the Paul campaign will appreciate today’s cash influx. An email they sent out a little more than a week ago pleaded with donors to give sooner than the Tea Party money bomb scheduled for December 16th, because they need to purchase advertising now for January. TV and radio stations don’t wait…they give their timeslots on a first-come, first-served basis.
There’s no word yet as to whether Rudy Giuliani has actually read any of the assigned reading given him by Dr. Paul last Spring. At this late date, it appears likely that Giuliani has probably blown off his homework entirely.
As for the aforementioned Tea Party money bomb, that site currently shows nearly 22,000 donors have signed up to-date. If donors on that day give the way that donors gave on November 5th, Dr. Paul could be looking forward to more than $5 million in one day, which would break his own one-day record, and that’s if the fundraiser were to happen today. With 16 days left before that fundraiser makes its own waves among the mainstream media, Dr. Paul could be looking at a $10 million day. Given the fact that his campaign reached the $10 million mark for the 4th quarter, it would mean a total quarter haul of over $20 million. Early January should be very, very interesting between the large media buys, the 1,000+ volunteers descending on New Hampshire, and a blimp flying around the country with Dr. Paul’s name plastered on it.
And that’s only based on what we know so far. Who knows what else those wonderful Paulites will come up with over the next 30 days, as the start of the primary season approaches.
