McCain slips: ’Get those offshore reserves exploited’
Raw Story
July 11, 2008
Republican presidential candidate John McCain let his tongue get the best of him at a town hall meeting Friday, revealing what critics would say is the true effect of opening US coastlines to drilling he now supports after years of opposing.
“I’ll do everything in my power to get those offshore reserves exploited … um, er, explored, discovered and um…” McCain said, drawing some knowing chuckles from the largely Republican audience.
He had to stop and collect his thoughts. Already he had been answering a woman’s question about lowering gas prices for nearly two minutes — squeezing in a joke about France in the process — and he seemed flustered.

McCain says only World War III would justify draft
Reuters
June 25, 2008
Only World War III would prompt Republican presidential candidate John McCain to bring back the military draft, McCain said on Tuesday.
Many Americans are fearful the U.S. government will be forced to reinstitute the draft given the prolonged Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Asked about that possibility by a potential voter in Florida during a telephone “town hall meeting,” McCain said: “I don’t know what would make a draft happen unless we were in an all-out World War III.”
The United States ended its last military draft in 1973 in the waning years of the Vietnam war, moving to an all-volunteer military force.
McCain, a Vietnam veteran, said the draft during that conflict weighed most heavily on lower-income Americans, and that this should not be repeated.
“I do not believe the draft is even practicable or desirable,” McCain said.

Ron Paul Ends Presidential Race, Starts a New Campaign for Liberty
Wall Street Journal
June 13, 2008
Rep. Ron Paul ended his presidential campaign Thursday night, but the maverick Texas lawmaker who spurned a political movement vowed to continue his efforts through a new organization, the Campaign for Liberty.
Paul’s exit from the race was just a formality. He never had a shot at the nomination but his grassroots candidacy cultivated national interest and was fueled by an online fund-raising operation of small donors who saw promise in Paul’s political message. A video of his farewell speech Thursday night has been viewed nearly 600,000 times.
The Texas lawmaker is hoping that base will transfer to his new political effort, whose mission is to elect more libertarian-minded candidates, like Paul, to office. “We’ll make our presence felt at every level of government, where just a few people with our level of enthusiasm can make a world of difference. We’ll keep an eye on Congress and lobby against legislation that threatens us,” Paul writes on his new site. “We’ll identify and support political candidates who champion our great ideas against the empty suits the party establishments offer the public. We will be a permanent presence on the American political landscape. That I promise you.”
Paul will also be holding his own convention, of sorts, during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., in early September. A Sept. 2 rally is in the works at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota where Paul hopes to attract 11,000 attendees.
Ron Paul: ‘I don’t plan to endorse John McCain’
Raw Replay

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer talked to Ron Paul about a rally his has planned in the same city as the Republican convention. Paul told Blitzer that his rally would pose a philosophical challenge to the Republican’s convention.
Paul told Blitzer that he had no intention of supporting John McCain. Paul said, “I don’t plan to endorse John McCain unless he changed his views on the war and was interested in the Federal Reserve and all these other things, which is not likely to happen.”

Government Figures Prove Ron Paul Is The Candidate Of The Troops
Top three contributors to Congressman’s campaign are army, navy, air force
Steve Watson
Infowars.net
February 15, 2008
Presidential candidate Ron Paul’s avocation of a humble foreign policy and his determined anti-war stance has once again been proven to be extremely popular amongst American servicemen and women as newly released figures reveal the top three contributors to the Congressman’s campaign are from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force respectively.
The figures have been posted at www.opensecrets.org, the website for the Federal Election Commission, the body that oversees campaign donations.
“No matter how you measure it, Dr. Paul has the support of our nation’s brave servicemen and women,” said Kent Snyder, Ron Paul 2008 campaign chairman. “His message of a strong national defense, and only going to war with a declaration of war – as mandated by the Constitution – resonates with those who risk their lives to defend that Constitution.”
The following table highlights the figures:
RON PAUL (R):
US Army $68,817
US Navy $57,076
US Air Force $52,371
Google Inc $51,382
Microsoft Corp $46,079
US Postal Service $31,054
Lockheed Martin $26,754
Boeing Co $24,388
At&T Inc $22,398
IBM Corp $19,177
Verizon Communications $18,399
Hewlett-Packard $18,014
Apple Inc $17,314
Intel Corp $16,751
Northrop Grumman $16,067
General Electric $15,788
General Dynamics $15,584
Cisco Systems $14,702
US Dept of Defense $14,338
Wachovia Corp $14,231
HOW TO READ THIS CHART: This chart lists the top donors to this candidate in the 2008 election cycle. The organizations themselves did not donate , rather the money came from the organization’s PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals’ immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.
Because of contribution limits, organizations that bundle together many individual contributions are often among the top donors to presidential candidates. These contributions can come from the organization’s members or employees (and their families). The organization may support one candidate, or hedge its bets by supporting multiple candidates.
Ron Paul has received almost triple the amount of military contributions as John McCain, whose top contributors do not include any branch of the military.
The Congressman’s total military donations also add up to almost as much as all the other remaining candidates, Republican and Democratic combined.
The figures overwhelmingly prove that those on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as veterans understand that Ron Paul is the only candidate who truly supports the troops by believing in a strong national defense while rejecting the gross abuse of the military via unconstitutional aggression.

Cheney: ‘Damn right’ I back Bush use of waterboarding
Raw Story
February 7, 2008
http://youtube.com/watch?v=w2aNncCkSgY
The controversial interrogation technique of waterboarding was a hot topic in a House Judiciary Committee hearing today, at which Attorney General Michael Mukasey said the Justice Department would not investigate the legality of the actions of U.S. interrogators on terror detainees.
CNN’s Situation Room reports that Vice President Dick Cheney, an ardent defender of U.S. tactics in the war on terror, was “defiant” about the use of waterboarding on suspects in an appearance today at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C.
Cheney said that he supported President Bush’s national security decisions, which included the approval of waterboarding along with other harsh interrogation tactics. “I’ve been proud to stand by [Bush], by the decisions he’s made,” said Cheney, who then asked aloud, “Would I support those decisions today?”
“You’re damn right I would,” he answered himself, to loud cheers.

Paul Trades Fox for Jay Leno
Reason
January 7, 2008
MANCHESTER, NH – Well, the choice was sort of made for him, but 24-odd hours after being bounced from the Fox News five-man forum, Ron Paul will be appearing on the Tonight Show. He’s en route to Los Angeles to shoot the show for Monday night. Ron’s son Rand and his friend ex-Rep. Barry Goldwater Jr. will be filling in at Paul’s campaign events until he returns Monday night.
I asked Paul if he had any problem breaking the writer pickets to appear on the show. Silly question: He doesn’t care about the unions or the pickets. And at his speeches at a Republican brunch (attended by almost 1000 people) and the Liberty Forum (attended by hundreds) But Paul backers in the state were enraged at the Fox shutout. At the Liberty Forum, so many people were organizing a Fox protest that Operation Live Free or Die sent out a request that Paul supporters chill out and devote their energy to an afternoon town hall instead. Some listened, but more than 200 materialized on Elm Street in Manchester to chant “Fox News Sucks!” and reel in local news teams. The Paul crowds were close to Frank Luntz’s debate focus group; after it was over, Luntz got the crowd to bet him $1000 that Paul would score 20 percent in the primary.
A little more from this afternoon: Paul will campaign at least until Feb. 5, by which time he’ll “reassess” the race.

Tim Russert predicts Paul could beat Giuliani in Iowa
Raw Story
January 2, 2008
Republican presidential contender Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) could be poised to beat Rudy Giuliani — once perceived as a frontrunner for the GOP nomination — in Thursday’s Iowa caucus voting, according to NBC’s Tim Russert.
Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe program for a discussion about the latest Iowa polling numbers, Russert said Paul could realistically score a fourth place showing in the state.
“Having gone around and watching this thing,” said Russert, “to say for example Huckabee wins, Romney is two. McCain comes in third. Thompson is out — he has already said if he’s not two, he’s out. I think Ron Paul has a chance of coming in fourth here. I really do.”
Assuming former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) took fifth, Russert added that it appeared likely Giuliani could slip to a lowly sixth place finish.
Conservative pundit and two-time Republican presidential aspirant Pat Buchanan said he believed the former New York mayor was now facing an uphill fight for his party’s nomination.
“I think Rudy is toast…I mean, you can’t go 0-4, 0-5, and come back and win Florida,” said Buchanan of the possibility that Giuliani could fair poorly in the opening contests of the primary season.
Giuliani has not campaigned heavily in Iowa, choosing instead to adopt a national strategy focused on other states, such as Florida, that vote later in the primary process. More than twenty states, including New York and California go to the polls on February 5.
“When you get to Florida and the February 5th states,” Giuliani told Fox News, “we’re ahead in some cases by large percentages and in some case by closer percentages. We believe it’s a good strategy and it’s going to work.”
The latest poll from Iowa’s Des Moines Register tallies Giuliani’s support in the state at five percent. Paul and Thompson each notch nine percent.

In October e-mail, Bhutto said she would hold Musharraf ‘responsible’ for her death
Raw Story
December 28, 2007
In an e-mail sent to a confidant in the US two months ago, assassinated Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto said she would hold the country’s current leader Pervez Musharraf “responsible” because his government did not do enough to provide for her security.
“I wld [sic] hold Musharaf [sic] responsible,” Bhutto wrote to her US spokesman, Mark Siegel, in the October e-mail, which was reported Thursday afternoon by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “I have been made to feel insecure by his minions, and there is no way what is happening in terms of stopping me from taking private cars or using tinted windows or giving jammers or four police mobiles to cover all sides cld [sic] happen without him.”
Blitzer told viewers he received the e-mail soon after it was sent two months ago, but he agreed not to report on it unless Bhutto was assassinated. “It’s a story I was asked to report to the world in — if Bhutto were killed,” he said.
The former Pakistani prime minister was shot twice Thursday just before her assassin detonated a suicide bomb that killed at least 20 more of her supporters.
Appearing on The Situation Room on CNN, Siegel said Bhutto was concerned about her security as soon as she returned from years-long exile in October.
“Benazir was very concerned by the lack of security that she had on her arrival in Karachi on October 18th,” Siegel said. “The circumstances around the attempt on the night of the 18th, the morning of the 19th, was very, very suspicious. … There was no investigation of that horrendous killing which killed 179 people. She had asked that Scotland Yard and the FBI be brought in for forensic help for the investigation. The government of General Musharraf absolutely refused.”
Since October, Siegel said, Bhutto received “some police protection,” but was denied other security precautions such as jammers to prevent improvised explosive devices or four police escorts to protect her from all sides when she appeared in public.
Mahmud al-Durrani, Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, also appeared on Blitzer’s program. He said it was “naive” to blame Musharraf’s government for the attack.
“Musharraf tried his best, but the circumstances under which she moved, that was a problem,” al-Durrani said. “When she was moving almost in a sea of humanity, so this — this — no system in the world can protect you against that.”

Denmark Bank predicts Ron Paul presidency and U.S. depression
USA Daily
December 27, 2007
Denmark based Saxo Bank predictsRon Paul presidency in 2008. According to Pravda.Ru, the bank predicts Paul will be the next president and that the U.S. economy will plunge into a depression prior to the election.
Saxo Bank says the U.S. economy will shrink by 25% and the Chinese economy will decrease by 40%. The economic downturn will come about as a result of the housing crash.
Ron Paul has been critical of the Federal Reserve and has blamed the Federal Reserve for causing the real estate bubble and crash. Paul has said that the loose monetary policy of the Fed had artificially inflated real estate prices which lead to the collapse.
Paul supports ‘Sound Money’ and opposes the Federal Reserve’s ‘Inflation Tax’ and says that he wants to prevent a dollar collapse. On December 16th grass roots activists organized an online protest of the ‘Inflation Tax’ and donated a record 6 million dollars to Paul’s campaign in one day.
Paul now leads all Republicans in fundraising and is best positioned to win the GOP nomination. His campaign is already financed through Feb 5th when 22 states hold primaries.
Paul also advocates the elimination of federal income taxes and a non interventionist foreign policy and is an advocate of protecting the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution. Paul has maintained that U.S. foreign policy was bankrupting the country.
Saxo Bank also predicts $175 a barrel for oil and the price of grain will double. Some have predicted that oil will climb to $250 a barrel if the U.S. attacks Iran. The bank also predicts that 30% of large building companies will go bankrupt.

‘View’ hosts grill Paul on abortion
Nick Juliano
Raw Story
December 4, 2007
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7kKSSbPJbM
Ron Paul defended his anti-abortion stance during an intense grilling from the women hosting “The View” Tuesday, acknowledging that he was unlikely to convince the pro-choice women of his position and that it would be virtually impossible to completely outlaw the procedure nationally.
“I don’t think we’re ever going to reach a stage where there will no abortions,” Paul said. The Texas congressman, whose long-shot bid for the Republican nomination is gaining steam, said he would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned. But Paul said state governments should be able to decide for themselves how to regulate abortion. “But I want to sort this out the way the constitution mandates, and that is at the local level.”
Paul, a former OB-GYN, said his anti-abortion position was based on his view that a fetus was a human being with the same rights as any other person. Just as he advocated personal privacy that would not give people the right’s to commit murder, he did not view a woman’s claim to her own body as superior to the fetus’s right to life.
“It’s a legal position because I honor and respect the rights of the mother. But your home too; your home is your castle,” Paul said. “I don’t want any government in your home: no searches without warrants, no cameras. But you can’t kill your baby in your home.”
The hosts spent several minutes discussing Paul’s abortion position, although they spent virtually no time on the libertarian lawmaker’s fierce opposition to the war in Iraq and his calls for limiting American intervention abroad, which have garnered him substantial support online.
Paul is the first candidate to appear on the popular daytime talk show since a writers strike began last month. Democratic candidates have said they would not cross picket lines to appear on The View while the strike persists; a CBS-sponsored debate could also be canceled because of Democrats refusals to participate if that network’s news writers call a strike.
On Tuesday’s show, Paul — a proponent of returning to the gold standard — said the dollar’s ongoing loss of value is “one of the most serious threats we’re facing today.”
Paul was visibly agitated when co-host Joy Behar told him, “you probably are not going to win and you know that,” then asked who among the Republicans he would be willing to vote for.
“You want those pro-war people to win?” Paul asked. “No, you don’t. … If they come around endorsing my anti-war views, and pro-free-markets and sound money, yeah I would consider it, but I don’t have anybody now that I could vote for.”

Ron Paul’s ‘money bomb,’ records and lessons
Baltimore Sun
November 6, 2007
Ron Paul, the libertarian/Republican/anti-Iraq-war candidate for president, has declared “a day for the record books.”
His claim – that the congressman from Texas has raised over $3 million in one day of online fundraising, a record – might be outdone in the record books only by Paul’s election as president.
That so many people have invested so much in someone who stands such little apparent chance of winning his party’s presidential nomination, let alone the White House, speaks volumes about alienation in modern American politics.
It is the same alienation that once handed H. Ross Perot close to 20 percent of the presidential vote. It is the same alienation that handed Ralph Nader just enough of the vote to deny Democrat Al Gore an Electoral College victory to accompany his popular-vote majority.
It is people voting for someone other than the establishment, odds be damned.
Paul already had raised a stunning $5 million in the last quarter, and he has set a goal of $12 million for this final quarter of the year. And, according to his campaign Web-site, Paul raised more than $3.1 million in 19 hours on Monday, marking the single largest fundraising effort of the 2008 election cycle.
As of 4 pm, the campaign maintained, it had raised $2.7 million, surpassing the record for the largest online presidential primary fundraising effort in a single day, and by 6:30 pm, the campaign said it had surpassed Republican Mitt Romney’s $3.1 million record for single-day fundraising this year. This morning, the Web-haul was reported at $3.8 million-plus.
If Paul can pull $3 million in a day, $12 million in a quarter should be a piece of cake — but a cake only lasts so long.
In one day, the Paul campaign asserts, more than 35,000 supporters had contributed to the building of the “money bomb.”
This is the bombshell which Paul suggests he needs to convince “the mainstream media” that he is a real candidate.
There’s one problem with this financial calculation. There are only so many times that the same 35,000 people can contribute – an equation which Democrat Howard Dean encountered, in somewhat larger numbers, albeit with the same ultimate result, in 2004 — and it’s unlikely that all of them live in Iowa, or in New Hampshire, where money might translate into the votes necessary to catapult someone into the second stage of the primaries.
.
Dean ran up record-breaking fundraising tallies in his upstart — and also anti-war — campaign for president. But his campaign was undone literally overnight by an under-performing turnout in the Iowa caucuses, and finished off with his own scream heard ’round the world.
Self-styled “maverick” John McCain set a one-day record of $1 million following his stunning upset of Texan George Bush in the New Hampshire Republican primary election of 2000, only to be run over in South Carolina by the self-styled “reformer with results” – who, as it happens, did establish a fundraising record for presidential campaigns in 2000 along with his Nader-assisted election victory.
At the end of the day, Paul’s contributors will be satisfied with their statement about an electoral system that does not, for the most part, speak to their interests.
Paul campaign spokesman Jesse Benton, calling Paul’s contributors “diverse,” has attempted to define the “Ron Paul coalition.”
It is “the Old Right,” people whom he describes as Robert Taft and Barry Goldwater Republicans, gun-rights advocates – he calls Paul “probably the strongest supporter of Second Amendment rights in the Congress” – progressives who want to end the war and are “sick of what they’re getting from the Democrats,” and social conservatives who oppose abortion – Paul says it’s not enough to overturn Roe v Wade; he wants a constitutional amendment taking abortion out of the purview of the federal courts.
But most of all, it’s people who look at the current field of leading presidential candidates, second-tier presidential candidates and even third-tier presidential candidates and say, none of the above.
And there may well be big money to be raised, indeed record money, outside the walls of the major parties’ castles. Paul is proof.

Despite Heavy Rains, Truth Movement Strong
Brian David Bradley
Prison Planet
September 12, 2007
The rain was almost fitting, as if tears from God raining down for the truth. Gathered around the ground zero PATH station, we all stood somberly while listening to the names of the fallen announced over the loud speakers.
For someone like me who had never been to the World Trade Center Complex, it was a very sobering and humbling moment. From the moment of my arrival I was stung by an overwhelming sense of reality. What I was witnessing was not just a memorial to the fallen, but an unmarked grave for twelve hundred still unidentified people.
News Media were everywhere. Within my first five minutes of arrival I had already been interviewed twice by Italian and British organizations. Most of the questions seemed condescending and not very objective, but I did my best to deal with their slanted investigation and hoped I didn’t give them more ammunition against our movement.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3859899305824758331&hl=en
The rain drizzled steadily throughout the silent vigil as our numbers grew steadily. Each new face brought with it a sense of sincerity, hope, love, and most of all, friendship. I stood there with brothers and sisters whom which I had never met before, but that didn’t matter, I was surrounded by friends.
Eventually, as our numbers swelled, the police politely barricaded us to prevent impedance to and from the train station. Some took this as a violation of our rights, and mocked the police officers, but most realized the rational behind the barricades, and graciously complied. Even Alex Jones, while being interviewed by Discovery Channel, seemed to have no problem with the barrier, as he politely asked our gathering to backup so that they could be constructed. The vigil was concluded at noon, and we all anxiously awaited the word to start our march towards building number seven.
The moment the march started, as if on queue, the skies opened up. As the crowd moved towards building seven, many of us without umbrellas had to seek shelter below ground to protect our equipment. The police hassled some, instructing us to take a train or get out of the station, but I stood by a far wall and was left alone. After a brief time, the rain began to subside, and I emerged from the underground. The previously brimming width was now sopping and evacuated. Looking for a familiar face, I came upon one of Alex Jones film crew, and we raced towards building seven, the march was on.
It wasn’t hard to find the crowd, the roar of voices was overwhelming. Chants, such as, WE ARE CHANGE, or 911 WAS AN INSIDE JOB, could be heard from blocks around. All of those that hadn’t taken shelter were dripping wet, but their energy was still tremendous.
Our next stop was the Federal Reserve. Once again the police were extremely polite and courteous, and helped the entire group move safely from destination to destination. Alex, Luke, and others from We Are Change led the march, and informed the crowd when to cease our chants out of respect for family members we were passing.
Our final destination was City Hall, where Alex and Luke spoke to all of us, but mostly towards police and other first responders. On many of their faces you could see a subdued smile, and from most I could sense a feeling of benediction. We had done something valuable on this day, we had stirred thousands.
It is all too easy in our fight against tyranny to become callous and bitter towards the world around us. It’s the tactic of our enemy to convince us we’ve been defeated before we even begin to fight. Many of us out there know that problems exist, but feel hopeless. Let me assure you, it is not. Getting active is asy. It’s getting off your couch that takes initiative.
