Ritter: US will target Iran next
Press TV
April 29, 2008
Former UN weapons inspector in Iraq Scott Ritter claims the United States is undoubtedly planning a military strike against Iran.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that the United States is planning right now, as we speak, a military strike against Iran. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and almost every senior US military official has pretty much acknowledged the same,” he told Democracy Now on Monday.
“We take a look at the military buildup, we take a look at the rhetoric, we take a look at the diplomatic posturing, and I would say that it’s a virtual guarantee that there will be a limited aerial strike against Iran in the not-so-near future-or not-so-distant future, that focuses on the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps,” Ritter claimed.
Earlier in April, Ritter asserted that there was an 80 percent chance of a US war with Iran.
Ritter added that the preparations for such a conflict has been steadily developing and involves Congress as well as the Bush administration.
According to Ritter, a war with Iran would speed up the ongoing decline of US standing in the world subsequently leading to Russia and China’s readiness to take advantage of the resulting power vacuum.
’Israel preparing to bomb Iran N-sites’
Press TV
April 29, 2008
The commander of the Israeli Air Force says the regime’s decision makers have been preparing plans to take out Iran’s nuclear facilities.
General Eliezer Shkedi, who also heads the Israeli task force on Iran, made the remarks in an interview with “60 Minutes” on Sunday.
A large portion of Shkedi’s service has been dedicated to the preparation for a possible mission that was never discussed in public; an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, should international economic sanctions fail, Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported on Monday.
Shkedi spoke of a mission in 1981, when Israeli war planes attacked a nuclear reactor in Iraq.
He went on to say that today the Israeli decision makers are faced with a similar choice about Iran’s nuclear program.
Israeli and US officials accuse Iran of seeking nuclear bombs.
Iran, a member of the IAEA and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), maintains that its nuclear activates are solely aimed at peaceful purposes.
Tehran has warned Tel Aviv of a crushing response, in case the regime launches an attack on the Islamic Republic.
’All options on table against Iran’
Press TV
April 28, 2008
The Zionist regime says it is pondering all options against Iran, accusing the Islamic Republic of pursuing a nuclear weapons program.
The Israeli Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz said late Sunday Iran must be prevented from gaining nuclear weapons, adding that all options were on the table against Tehran, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Mofaz made the remark as he headed a delegation to Washington for talks on the Israel-US Strategic Dialogue.
“Teheran leads the axis of evil, poses a threat to the entire world, is up to its neck in the Middle East and is even trying to get a foothold in the West Bank,” he claimed.
Iran says that as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which allows its members to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, it is following a peaceful nuclear program within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and NPT regulations.
This is while the Zionist regime has so far refused to join the NPT and refused to allow any inspections whatsoever of its vast nuclear facilites by competent international agencies such as the IAEA.
Furthermore, the Zionist regime happens to be up to its neck in causing all the problems, conflicts and human sufferings in the Middle East.
Hundreds of innocent men, women and children in occupied Palestine are ruthlessly murdered every year by its indiscriminate use of the most lethal weapons ever used against a defenseless civilian population in human history.

Navy Says It Fired Warning Shots At Iranian Boats
AP
January 12, 2007
The U.S. Navy said Friday that one of its ships fired warning shots at a small Iranian boat in the Strait of Hormuz in December during one of two serious encounters that month.
The USS Whidbey Island fired the warning shots on Dec. 19 in response to a small Iranian boat that was rapidly approaching it, said a U.S. Navy official.
“One small (Iranian) craft was coming toward it, and it stopped after the Whidbey Island fired warning shots,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
It was the first official confirmation that the United States had fired warning shots in any recent confrontation with Iran in the Gulf.
Pentagon backs down over Iranian boat claims
Guardian
January 11, 2008
Doubts intensified last night over the nature of an alleged aggressive confrontation by Iranian patrol boats and American warships in the Persian Gulf on Sunday, after Pentagon officials admitted that they could not confirm that a threat to blow up the US ships had been made directly by the Iranian crews involved in the incident.
Several news sources reported that senior navy officials had conceded that the voice threatening to blow up the US warships in a matter of minutes could have come from another ship in the region, or even from shore.
The concession came on the day that a formal American complaint was lodged with Iran over the incident, and just 24 hours after President George Bush, on tour in the Middle East where he will be discussing policy towards Iran, warned Tehran to desist from such aggression and said any repetition would lead to “serious consequences”.
The Pentagon alleges that the confrontation lasted about 20 minutes and took place in the Strait of Hormuz, where the US ships were in international waters. Five Iranian patrol boats swarmed around three US warships and came within a threatening 200 metres, prompting US personnel to be put on alert.
The US navy has said that its gunners came within seconds of firing on the speedboats.
On Tuesday, the US administration released video footage that it said showed the Iranian speedboats harassing the American vessels. A voice in English with a strong accent was heard to say: “I am coming at you – you will explode in a couple of minutes.”
Yesterday the Iranians put out their own four-minute video that showed an Iranian patrol officer in a small boat communicating with one of the US ships. “Coalition warship number 73, this is an Iranian navy patrol boat,” the Iranian said. An American naval officer replied: “This is coalition warship number 73 operating in international waters.”
The voice of the Iranian sailor in Tehran’s footage was different to the deeper and more menacing voice, threatening to blow up the warships in the US version. Nor was there any sign of aggressive behaviour by the Iranian patrol boats.
The Strait of Hormuz is a particularly sensitive stretch of water, both economically as a key shipping route for oil from the Gulf, and militarily. The location, together with memories of the arrest of 15 British sailors by the Iranians last year and their detention for two weeks, is likely to have heightened nerves on both sides.
But the mystery remains of where the voice that apparently threatened to bomb the US ships came from. The Pentagon has said that it recorded the film and the sound separately, and then stitched them together – a dubious piece of editing even before it became known that the source of the voice could not, with certainty, be linked to the Iranian patrol boats.
A post on the New York Times news blog yesterday from a former naval officer with experience of these waters said that the radio frequency used in the Strait of Hormuz was regularly polluted with interfering chatter, somewhat like CB radio. “My first thought was that the ‘explode’ comment might not have come from one of the Iranian craft, but some loser monitoring the events at a shore facility.”
Despite growing doubts about what happened, the Bush administration continued to stand by claims of Iranian hostility. The defence secretary, Robert Gates, said the concern came from the “fact that there were five of these boats and that they came as close as they did to our ships and behaved in a pretty aggressive manner”.

Bush insists Iran is ‘dangerous’
AFP
December 11, 2007
US President George W. Bush insisted Iran was “dangerous” Tuesday and would be more so if it began enriching uranium, stepping up warnings a week after a US report said Tehran had halted its nuclear weapons program.“Iran is dangerous and they will be even more dangerous if they learn how to enrich uranium,” Bush said after meeting his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano.
Bush said Tehran had an obligation to disclose all of its past nuclear activities, and added he had expressed to Napolitano his “deep concern about Iran.”
His comments came after a surprise joint report released last week by 16 US intelligence agencies said Iran had ended its nuclear weapons program in 2003.
Bush had escalated his warnings that Iran posed a threat in recent months and pushed for tougher sanctions, amid growing talk of a US military strike against it.
The White House promptly responded by insisting Iran still posed a threat.
“Iran is dangerous, we believe Iran had a secret military weapons program and Iran must explain to the world why they had a program,” Bush said Tuesday.

Report contradicts Bush on Iran nuclear program
Reuters
December 3, 2007
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A new U.S. intelligence report says Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003 and it remains on hold, contradicting the Bush administration’s earlier assertion that Tehran was intent on developing a bomb.
The National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) released on Monday could undermine U.S. efforts to convince other world powers to agree on a third package of U.N. sanctions against Iran for defying demands to halt uranium enrichment activities.
Tensions have escalated in recent months as Washington has ratcheted up the rhetoric against Tehran, with U.S. President George W. Bush insisting in October that a nuclear-armed Iran could lead to World War Three.
But in a finding likely to surprise U.S. friends and foes alike, the latest NIE concluded: “We do not know whether (Iran) currently intends to develop nuclear weapons.”
That marked a sharp contrast to an intelligence report two years ago that stated Iran was “determined to develop nuclear weapons.”
But the new assessment found Iran was continuing to develop technical means that could be used to build a bomb and it would likely be capable of producing enough enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon “sometime during the 2010-2015 time-frame.”
The shift in the intelligence community’s thinking on Iran comes five years after a flawed NIE concluded neighboring Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction — a report that helped pave the way for the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.
No nuclear, chemical or biological weapons were ever found in Iraq and intelligence agencies since have been more cautious about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, who have repeatedly accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, were briefed on the new NIE last Wednesday.
Washington, which insists it wants to solve the Iran problem diplomatically while leaving military options “on the table,” is pushing for tougher U.N. sanctions against Tehran but faces resistance from China and Russia.
Iran insists it wants nuclear technology only for civilian purposes, such as electricity generation.
The nuclear standoff has become a major issue in the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, with candidates weighing in on the prospects for military action against Iran.
