Nevada GOP cancels convention so Ron Paul can’t win

July 18, 2008

The Nevada Republican Party decided Thursday not to reconvene its scuttled state convention this month, claiming it couldn’t generate enough interest to reach a legal quorum to elect delegates to the national convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Instead, the party’s executive board, in a private conference call July 25, would decide who from Nevada will attend the Republican National Convention to formally nominate U.S. Sen. John McCain.

The state party abruptly ended its state convention in April to head off a delegation of Ron Paul supporters who had captured control of the proceedings and appeared on track to elect a majority slate to the Sept. 1-4 national convention.

A group of disaffected Republicans trying to get to the national convention are asking a Reno judge to halt the party’s efforts to appoint a national delegation in a private conference call scheduled for Friday.

Dr. Wayne Terhune, a Sparks dentist leading a contingent of Ron Paul supporters, said the state party broke the law when it canceled the reconvening of the state convention planned for Saturday.

“They are illegally appointing delegates behind closed doors in private phone calls,” Terhune said Monday. “State law says you have to have a convention.”

At the Nueces County Republican party convention, March 29th, in Corpus Christi Texas, Ron Paul supporters walked out in protest and held their own emergency convention in the parking lot. Republican party Chairperson Mike Bertuzzi grossly violated party rules by announcing new delegates to the morning’s roll call who were never elected as precinct delegates on the night of the Republican primary, then again by ignoring repeated objections by party delegates, which he is required to recognize.

Mr. Bertuzzi claims that he avoided a ’party takeover’ by unruly Ron Paul supporters, but a recently released audio tape of the event clearly shows otherwise. As a blatant violation of convention rules is underway by the Chairperson, many delegates can be heard rising to voice objections with no avail until a local man, Paul Hunt , is escorted out by the Sergeant at Arms..

The following morning, the local news rag, The Corpus Christi Caller Times, reported only one side of the incident, by claiming that a GOP party takeover had been thwarted while presenting Chairperson Mike Bertuzzi as some kind of political hero for violating the rights of local Republicans.

GOP Walks Out On Their Own Convention In Ron Paul Fiasco
Rule change had given Paul supporters bigger influence but officials simply cancelled event

After Ron Paul supporters managed to get a rule changed positioning them for more national convention delegate slots than expected, the Nevada GOP simply cancelled their own state convention and left, in what political observers are calling an unprecedented fiasco.

“After a super-majority of Ron Paul supporters captured control of the Republican state convention Saturday, state party officials abruptly canceled the event without electing delegates to the national convention,” reports the Reno Gazette Journal.

“I’ve seen factions walk out, I’ve never seen a party walk out, I’ve never even heard of that,” said Jeff Greenspan, regional coordinator for the Paul campaign.

Earlier in the day, state delegates supporting the Texas Congressman’s pursuit of the nomination “voted through a rules change that forced the state party to abandon its pre-set ballot of potential national convention delegates and open up the race to the rest of the state delegates,” according to the Gazette Journal.

As the convention neared its end, chairman Bob Beers claimed that the party’s contract for the hall at the Peppermill Resort Casino had expired and the event would be rescheduled, and delegates who had traveled from several hundreds of miles away in some cases were barred from voting, prompting loud boos and catcalls from the audience.

“As Beers was escorted out of the building, a short-lived effort to rescue the convention was launched by party activist Mike Weber. Although several hundred Paul supporters stayed, they weren’t strong enough to make a quorum to continue the convention,” according to reports.

Officials claimed that the rule change overwhelmed the party’s capacity to process the votes, but Paul supporters were left furious by the decision.

“This was an organized effort to promote the agenda of a few people, the party leaders, over we the people,” said Chloie Leavitt.

Paul’s rousing speech had earlier been met with raucous cheers by supporters who drowned out the small number of McCain supporters attempting to heckle.

“Our campaign has continued, is doing well and improving, even though we know exactly what the numbers are,” Paul said. “But the message is worthwhile. Your vote can really count if you vote for limitation of government power and spending,” stated the Congressman.

The following You Tube clips illustrate what happened in Reno this weekend, a situation described by the poster as “total anarchy”.

Ron Paul doesn’t plan to drop out

‘Message’ candidate doesn’t plan to drop out

Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul speaks during the West Virginia Republican presidential convention Tuesday in Charleston, W.Va.

One month into the 2008 presidential primaries, Texan Ron Paul has outlasted a half-dozen other GOP hopefuls.

The 72-year-old doctor-turned-politician says he has no plans to quit no matter how everything shakes out today after the Super Tuesday votes are counted.

“There were 11 candidates, and now we’re down to four,” he told a Minnesota crowd this week. “We started low and we keep going.

“If I dropped out, my supporters wouldn’t be happy.”

That’s exactly right, said Jeremy Blosser, a 31-year-old Paul supporter from Arlington.

“We have no intention of going anywhere,” he said.

“Ron Paul has been fighting for our rights and for a constitutional government for over 30 years, and this campaign has spread those ideas to an entire generation. We see no reason to not keep going.

“We are Texans — we don’t run away when the chips are down and the stakes are high.”

Paul may have greater staying power on the campaign trail because his fundraising has been fairly healthy, pulling in more than $28 million since his campaign kicked off, new federal election records show.

He has come in third and fourth in several primaries and took second in Nevada’s primary last month.

To many, he is seen as a “message” candidate — trying to get the word out about his desire to end the war, bring home troops, reduce the size of government and get leaders to more literally follow the Constitution.

“His fundraising has been substantial, and he’s trying to get his message out,” said Bruce Buchanan, a government professor at the University of Texas at Austin who specializes in presidential politics.

“There will come a point when it’s truly down to two and he doesn’t have a percentage to make it into the debates anymore, and then he may fold his tent.

“I don’t think he will until he has to.”

Neither Paul nor spokesman Jesse Benton could be reached for comment Tuesday, as they were campaigning in Super Tuesday states.

But few expect him to go quietly into the night.

“He is certainly the un-cola of Republican candidates,” said Tom Marshall, a political science professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.

“Message candidates don’t drop out as easily or as quickly.”

Ron Paul 2nd In Montana
Ron Paul garnered 24.54% in Montana, 21.16% in North Dakota, and gained respectable percentages and delegates elsewhere.

Nolan Chart

While Paul supporters may be tempted to despair as they look over the results of Super Tuesday, there are some gems among the general rubble indicating that not all Americans are asleep in front of their TV sets.

Here are the Montana results:

  • Romney 38.34%
  • Paul 24.54%
  • McCain 21.96%
  • Huckabee 15.03%

Here are the North Dakota results:

  • Romney 35.47%
  • McCain 22.61%
  • Paul 21.16%
  • Huckabee 19.79%

Dr. Paul also achieved respectable percentages in Alaska and Minnesota with 16.41% and 15.25% respectively. In other states he has received or has the prospect of gaining delegates, if not high percentages.

Maybe the folks in some of these states aren’t big TV addicts? My guess would be that Dr. Paul’s results are probably inversely proportional to television addiction on a state by state basis. Anyone have viewership statistics by state?

Ron Paul is in this for the long haul, and as his supporters, we need to stand behind him and fight for our liberty!

Ron Paul Finishes Second in Maine Caucus

Ron Paul Beats McCain in Maine Caucus, Primed to Win Over 1/3 of State Delegates
In the race for delegates, Ron Paul appears to closely trail Romney for first place

Ron Paul 2008

February 4, 2008

Fbiiraqisbein_mn

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – While most reports about this past weekend’s Maine Caucus focused on the purely symbolic presidential preference poll, in the meaningful race to secure delegates to the state convention Ron Paul is primed to finish second with likely 35 percent of the total delegates.

Delegates to the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis are elected by the state delegates. Internal results from 10 of 16 counties, including the largest cities of Portland, South Portland, Lewiston, Auburn, Augusta, Waterville, Bangor, and Brewer, show Ron Paul picking up 215 of 608 State Convention delegates so far reported, or 35%.

“Ron Paul’s strong second place finish in Maine, in which he beat John McCain, is proof that this race is far from over,” said Ron Paul campaign manager Lew Moore. “We’ll continue to battle for every delegate in this wide-open race for the Republican nomination.”

In the presidential preference poll, with 70 percent reporting, Ron Paul is in third place just two percentage points behind John McCain. However, the Maine preference poll is purely a beauty contest, and in the actual election of state delegates the so-called “frontrunner” McCain is far behind Ron Paul.

Ron Paul Second in Maine State Delegates with 35%
Romney has 52% of the vote while Paul has secured 35% of the state delegates who will allocate Maine’s 18 national delegates in May.

The final State Caucus before Super Tuesday is projected to be won by Governor Mitt Romney based on 74% of the presidential preference poll votes in Mitt Romney has 52%. There’s a battle for second place, in popular votes, going on between Ron Paul and John McCain. As of 4:34est the Maine Republican Party website showed there were just 154 votes separating the two with over 25% of the caucus locations still to report in.

According to a press release by Jesse Benton, of the Ron Paul campaign, the Texas Congressman, with his message of liberty and freedom, has already picked up 215 of the total 608 Maine state delegates. This number could increase as results come in from the final 6 counties. 35% of the state delegates place him second behind Mitt Romney even though McCain has a slight lead in the popular vote. There is no way for John McCain to catch Ron Paul in state delegate count even if he holds on to his slim lead in polling simply based on cities and caucus locations already won by Ron Paul

Although many major newspapers are giving all 18 Maine National Delegates to Mitt Romney that is not the case. State delegates in Maine are non-binding. The actual allocation of the 18 national delegates will not be determined until May 2 when the Maine Republican Party State Convention is going to be held and the state delegates will then decide.

“Ron Paul’s strong second place finish in Maine, in which he beat John McCain, is proof that this race is far from over,” said Ron Paul campaign manager Lew Moore. “We’ll continue to battle for every delegate in this wide-open race for the Republican nomination.”

Paul Draws Big Denver Crowd

The alarm in the Colorado Convention Center employee’s voice was verging on panic.

“That room is packed so tight it’s not even funny,” he shouted into a radio Friday night as the Segway he was riding hummed and swerved down a wide carpeted hallway.

The crowd for Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul was so large it surprised his own organizers. They were forced to hurriedly open partitions to double the size of the ballroom space minutes before Paul’s scheduled appearance in the Four Seasons Ballroom. When that wasn’t enough hundreds of people stood rimming the hall that sits 1,536.

“I’m just totally dumbfounded,” Paul said as he began his speech before a raucous sign-waving crowd. “The enthusiasm seems to be growing. Freedom is popular.”

Many of his supporters boldly predicted he would win more delegates in the state then front runners Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney even though Paul has yet to win a majority in any state primary.

“He’s real strong in Colorado,” said Vince Holcomb, 45, a massage therapist from Centennial. “Ron Paul is a lot higher in the polls than the mainstream media publicize.”
