FBI tries to deport Muslim man for refusing to be an informant

FBI tries to deport Muslim man for refusing to be an informant
After Imam Foad Farahi declined to become a federal informant, the government tried to destroy him.

FederalJack.com
October 17, 2009

(MIAMI NEW TIMES) Bush-Cheney and Kerry-Edwards signs littered the lawns of North Miami Beach as Imam Foad Farahi walked from a mosque to his apartment a few blocks away. It was November 1, 2004, the day before George W. Bush would win a second term in office. But the Muslim holy man had been too busy fasting and praying to pay much attention to the presidential election.

For Farahi, an Iranian citizen who had lived in the United States for more than a decade, it was simply another month of Ramadan in South Florida. Then, around 5 p.m., as he neared his apartment, he saw two men standing outside. They were waiting for him.

“We’re from the FBI,” one of the men said.

“OK,” he responded.

They wanted to know about José Padilla and Adnan El Shukrijumah, two South Florida men linked to the Al-Qaedaterrorist network. Padilla, the so-called Dirty Bomber, was arrested in May 2002 and initially given enemy combatant status. He eventually stood trial in Miami, was convicted on terrorism charges, and sentenced to 17 years in prison. Shukrijumah is a Saudi Arabian and an alleged Al-Qaeda member whose last known address was in Miramar. The FBI is offering up to $5 million for information leading directly to his capture.

“I know José Padilla, but I don’t know Adnan,” Farahi told the agents.

Of course, Farahi knew of Shukrijumah. As imam of theShamsuddin Islamic Center in North Miami Beach, Farahi was in a unique position to know about local Muslims, including Padilla and Shukrijumah. Padilla had prayed at Farahi’s mosque and was once among his Arabic students. Shukrijumah was the son of a local Islamic religious leader.

“I have had no contact with Padilla since 1998, when he left the country,” Farahi told the government agents. He had once met Shukrijumah but had no contact with him after that. “I don’t know anything about his activities.”

“We want you to work with us,” Farahi remembers the agents telling him.

And this is when the imam’s five-year battle with the federal government began.

“I have no problem working with you guys or helping you out,” Farahi said. He could keep them informed about the local Muslim community or translate Arabic. But the relationship, he insisted, would need to be public; others would have to know he was helping the government.

But that wasn’t what the FBI had in mind, Farahi says. The agents wanted him to become a secret informant who would investigate specific people. And they knew Farahi was in a vulnerable position. His student visa had expired, and he had asked the government for a renewal. He had also applied for political asylum, hoping one of those legal tracks would offer a way for him to stay in the United States indefinitely.

“We’ll give you residency,” the agents promised. “We’ll give you money to go to school.”

Farahi considered the offer for a moment and then shook his head.

“I can’t,” he told them.

The slender, bearded 34-year-old Farahi frowns as he recalls all of this while sitting on a white folding chair in the Shamsuddin Islamic Center on a recent afternoon. “People trust you as a religious figure, and you’re trying to kind of deceive them,” he says, remembering the choice he faced. “That’s where the problem is.”

Farahi soon discovered the FBI’s offer wasn’t optional. The federal government used strong-arm tactics — including trying to have him deported and falsely claiming it had information linking him to terrorism — in an effort to force him to become an informant, he says.

The imam has resisted the government at every step, having most recently taken his political asylum case to the U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta.

“As long as you’re not a citizen, there are lots of things [the government] can do,” says Ira Kurzban, Farahi’s attorney. “They can allege you’re a terrorist and try to bring terrorist charges against you, or they can get you deported.” Terrorism, he explains, can even be defined as giving “money to a hospital in the West Bank that turns out to be run by Hamas.”

Farahi asserts unequivocally he is innocent of any terrorism charges the government could bring against him. In fact, he says, he would report anyone in the Muslim community supporting terrorism. “From the Islamic perspective, it’s your duty to respect the law, and if there’s anything going on, any crime about to be committed, or any kind of harm to be caused to people or property, it should be reported to the police,” he says.

The FBI’s intense efforts to pressure Farahi into becoming an informant reveal the bureau’s desperation to infiltrate local Muslim communities. The hard-line tactics have become so widespread in the United States that the San Francisco-based civil rights group Muslim Advocates distributes a video advising how to respond if FBI agents approach.

In fact, relations between the FBI and U.S. Islamic communities are so strained that a coalition of Muslim-American groups in March accused the government of using “McCarthy-era tactics” and threatened to sever communication with the FBI unless it “reassessed its use of agent provocateurs in Muslim communities.”

Despite this public conflict, few specific cases of Muslims being recruited as informants have become public. Farahi’s battle with the government is not only daring but also unusual.

“People have two choices,” Farahi says. “Either they end up working with the FBI, or they leave the country on their own. It’s just sometimes when you’re in that situation, not many people are strong enough to stand up and resist and fight — to reject their offers.”

Hackers recover destroyed arrest footage

Hackers recover destroyed arrest footage
Reporter assaulted and arrested for filming MJTF (Multi-Jurisdictional Gang Task Force) and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) randomly searching young black men.

A reporter for FEDERALJACK.COM was arrested at 3:15am in front of Royal Palm Hotel on Miami Beach during Urban (Hip Hop) Beach Week for obstructing an investigation. The charge was later changed to resisting arrest without violence, and the arrest was considered a Gang Activity and Fraud Activity related arrest according to the arrest affidavit.

Recent reports from the Miami Herald indicated that the ACLU and NAACP were keeping close watch on the police activity. Reporters from the FederalJack.com Tyranny Response Squad were dispatched to South Beach with video cameras, audio recorders, and flyers urging attendees to report police oppression to the ACLU hotline.

Upon approaching the Royal Palm Hotel, the reporters noticed dozens of agents from the Muti-Jurisdictional Gang Task Force conducting unwarranted searches of several young black men. The cameras started rolling. An officer approached the reporter and said “You’re really pissing me off with that fucking camera.”

He closed the camera to diffuse the situation, however the camera continued to record video and audio. Upon walking away, the reporter had his arm grabbed and bent back by an agent from the MJTF. He was choked and slammed on the pavement, while being interrogated with questions about his country of citizenship.

An unidentified member of the MJTF was heard by the reporter to remark, “Is that FederalJack.com?” Other remarks made by the agents involved threats of sodomy and related tortures.

The reporter spent a total of 16 hours in custody of the Miami-Dade County Corrections department. He was first brought in to the Miami Beach Police Department, and was held for approximately 3 hours.

While in the possession of police officials, the digital memory of the camera was erased.

He was then transfered to the downtown Justice Center and held for an additional 13 hours. At 10:10am the required $1000 bond was posted, and he was still held for over 8 additional hours. He was released at approximately 6:30 pm.

FederalJack.com is currently investigating legal defense options.

More detailed information, video, audio, photos, and arrest documents will be posted as they are made available.

If you have encountered any police brutality during the festivities at South Beach, please submit any stories, images, video, or documents to jack@federaljack.com.

Cops To Use Top Secret Weapons On Activists

Cops to Use “Top Secret” Weapons on Activists During Conventions

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars
July 8, 2008

As CNN reports (see video), Congress is forking over $100 million for “security expenses” in Denver and St. Paul this summer. CNN’s Ed Lavendera says the types of weapons being purchased are “top secret” and this does not sit well with the ACLU, who is suing both cities to find out how the money is being spent. “In Minnesota where republicans are holding their convention, the ACLU says it’s trying to find out how security money is being spent but law enforcement agencies insist these weapons should be kept secret so they have the upper hand in keeping the convention safe,” explains Lavendera.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=o_522FkCjCY

In other words, members of both factions of the globalist political party will be safe from agents provocateurs who are routinely dispatched to break a few windows and burn trash in the street in order to give the cops an excuse to attack peaceful demonstrators.

CNN and the corporate media are notorious for ignoring this fact, going back at least to late 1999 during the WTO demonstrations in Seattle. Neil deMause wrote for FAIR in early 2000, “most news outlets ignored the police assaults that preceded the looting, preferring to believe that it was the acts of a few out-of-control protesters that led to the violence, and downplaying police use of force…. numerous eyewitness reports would describe police ignoring vandals while busily assaulting demonstrators who were blockading the entrance to the WTO. The Seattle Times, in its timeline of the WTO protests (12/5/99), noted the first use of pepper spray and rubber bullets on demonstrators at 10 a.m. on November 30, nearly two hours before the first windows were broken.” Peter Cassidy, a police tactics researcher, said at the time that the lack of concern over Seattle police behavior “will lend credibility for other police departments to do the same thing.” In short, “opening your mouth becomes something that exposes you to danger. It exposes you to militarized forms of law enforcement.” As Alex Jones documents in Police State II: The Takeover, Delta Force sponsored and aided so-called “Black Bloc anarchists” in Seattle (see video).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0POPVIX6sf0

Militarized “law enforcement” continued during the FTAA demonstrations in Miami in November, 2003. Miami Activists Defense (MAD) reported “thousands of militarized police, in full riot gear, including electrified shields, tanks, automatic and semi-automatic weapons, tear gas, rubber bullets and bean bags, violently arresting peaceful demonstrators,” absent any provocation or “direct action” on the part of activists. Kris Hermes, MAD spokesperson, noted that Miami mayor Diaz declared police violence against peaceful demonstrators would be the “model for homeland security,” according to Jennifer Van Bergen. In April, 2003, in Oakland, California, cops used wooden dowel projectiles and rubber bullets against peaceful antiwar activists (see photo). Oakland cops told the San Jose Mercury News that although the demonstration was peaceful, there were a “few agitators in the crowd,” a claim disputed by witnesses. “I was there from 5 a.m. on, and the only violence that I saw was from the police,” Joel Tena, the constituent liaison for Oakland’s vice mayor, told the newspaper. “What happened today was very surprising. It seemed the police were operating under the assumption that they were not going to let any kind of protest happen.”If sincere “agitators” are not present, the cops are often obliged to produce them, as they did during an anti-globalist demonstration in Montebello, Quebec, last year. “Police officials tried to justify the extraordinary measures deployed at Montebello by claiming they were needed to control ‘extremist’ demonstrators and prevent them from ‘overwhelming’ conference security forces,” writes François Tremblay. “In fact, video images reveal a long-established police practice, that is, the use of agent provocateurs to provide a pretext for a brutal intervention by riot police against anti-government demonstrators and still further restrictions on the right to protest and other basic democratic rights.” In fact, “restrictions on the right to protest and other basic democratic rights” is the point, as the globalists are sincerely worried about citizens resisting the plan to turn the world into a “free trade” labor gulag based on the China model. In Denver and St. Paul this summer, we are likely to see a new level of violence deployed against peaceful demonstrators. In order to provide a sufficient pretext to use “top secret” weapons against activists, “agitators” and “anarchists” will be unleashed. Notes the activist group JustGetThere:

There is a growing trend of peaceful events being infiltrated by agent provocateurs who operate under the umbrella of black-ops. The goal is to create radical groups who seek out violence either during events, or on corporate and federal property. The operatives will be in positions of power or influence, and will only promote violence instead of a peaceful information based strategy for activism. Most recently in Canada, undercover cops dressed like anarchists were caught causing violence and attacking cops at the WTO protest in Montebello. The cops at first stand down against their own agents, then engage the peaceful activists. This modus operandi has been used in the past, and seems to be in motion for this event by the group ReCreate 68. The DNC convention, of course, has a free speech zone and you have to receive a permit through a lottery system. It’s striking that this group amongst hundreds won a permit, while publicly espousing violence. This group has been challenged to behave peacefully during this event by the founder of another group “We Are Change Colorado” and their response was “The police only understand violence”. This is a red flag and has the earmarks of a operation ran by elements of black-ops to justify the end of our rights of protests, political dissidence and redress of grievances. Thanks to the great work of TruthAlliance.net, this operation has been exposed in the early stages. So when the event occurs we will be ready and prepared to expose this as an intentional act perpetuated by groups who have been influenced or directed by members of law enforcement and black-ops.

Of course, CNN and the corporate media will play right along. After the cops use their “pepper ball rifles, goo guns, sonic rays” against legitimate demonstrators concerned about the fascist cancer of unchecked globalization, we can expect the talking heads to follow the script, as they did in Seattle, and blame the victims.

Citigroup: Euro May Approach $1.69 by September

Citigroup: Euro May Approach $1.69 by September

Bloomberg
July 2, 2008

The euro may be nearing an “explosive breakout,’’ reaching record levels against the U.S. dollar, according to a Citigroup Global Markets Inc. research note.

The trading pattern, including a so-called double-bottom that tested lows, resembles the one before Feb. 26 that preceded the surge to $1.6019 per euro, analysts Tom Fitpatrick in New York and Shyam Devani in London wrote in the note today.

“ We cannot help but feel that things might be about to get very bad again,’’ the analysts said, referring to the possible combination of falling bond yields and rising oil prices.

The exchange rate may approach $1.69 per euro by September if previous patterns are duplicated, the report said.

The dollar fell to a two-month low, trading at $1.5864 at 12:35 p.m. in New York, down 0.5 percent from $1.5793 yesterday. It earlier touched $1.5887, the weakest since April 24. The dollar reached an all-time low of $1.6019 per euro on April 22.

China’s premier urges US to stabilise dollar

AFP
July 1, 2008

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has again called on the United States to stabilise the dollar, warning the greenback’s decline was posing threats to the global economy.

“China is taking measures to safeguard its stable economic development,” Wen said during a meeting with visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Monday, according to a statement posted on the foreign ministry’s website.

“(We) hope the US will overcome its subprime crisis soon and stabilise the exchange rate of the US dollar, which is significant to the whole world,” he said, according to the transcript posted late on Monday.

The Chinese currency, the yuan, has appreciated about 20 percent against the dollar over the past three years, which has placed enormous pressure on China’s exporters and forced some out of business.

China’s foreign exchange reserves, by far the largest in the world, hit 1.80 trillion dollars at the end of May, meaning even a small decline in the value of the dollar could cause a big loss to the Chinese treasury’s coffers.

It was the second time this year that Wen had spoken out against the weak dollar and problems in the US economy, and the impacts for China.

“The impact of the US subprime mortgage crisis is expanding, (and) the value of the dollar is continuing to fall,” Wen told China’s annual meeting of parliament in March.

“China is now in a critical period in its reform and development, and we must be fully prepared for changes in the international environment and become better able to defuse risks.”

Central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan last month spoke out at the falling US dollar, saying it was driving up oil and other commodity prices, stoking inflation and causing pain for developing nations.

Factories hit worldwide as commodity prices soar

Reuters
July 1, 2008

Soaring commodity costs are denting manufacturing activity in Asia and Europe and the outlook looks bleak as new orders drop off in the face of rising prices, surveys showed on Tuesday.

Manufacturing activity in the euro zone contracted in June for the first time in three years while business confidence in Asia’s largest export markets is buckling and output has likely contracted further in the United States.

Purchasing managers indices showed manufacturing activity in the euro zone fell to 49.2 in June, China saw its index fall to a near three-year low of 52.0 while in Britain it contracted at its sharpest rate since December 2001.

Britians have to register 3 days before visiting America

Britons visiting America will now have to register 72 hours in advance

UK Daily Mail
June 3, 2008

British visitors to the United States will have to register their trip with the American government 72 hours before they leave, it will be announced today.

The new plans – the latest in a series of measures designed to strengthen security – will see all travellers from countries which do not currently require a visa forced to register online three days before flying.

The scheme is expected to be announced today by Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff, to take effect from January

It will apply to citizens of the 27 visa waiver programme countries which include most of western Europe, Australia, Brunei, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore.

The US has also signed agreements with eight other countries including the Czech Republic, Hungary and South Korea which will put them on track to join the visa waiver programme.

Last year many European countries expressed concern about the idea of registering before travel.

The initial proposal was that passengers should register 48 hours in advance and many large European companies, including several in the UK, claimed the move would prevent deal-clinching, last-minute flights for business.

Now US officials say they want people to register even further in advance- but with the concession that once a traveller has registered under the new rules for the first time, it will be valid for multiple entries over two years.

10 airports install body scanners
Devices can peer under passengers’ clothes

Thomas Frank
USA Today
June 6, 2008

Body-scanning machines that show images of people underneath their clothing are being installed in 10 of the nation’s busiest airports in one of the biggest public uses of security devices that reveal intimate body parts.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently started using body scans on randomly chosen passengers in Los Angeles, Baltimore, Denver, Albuquerque and at New York’s Kennedy airport.

Airports in Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas and Miami will be added this month. Reagan National Airport in Washington starts using a body scanner today. A total of 38 machines will be in use within weeks.

“It’s the wave of the future,” said James Schear, the TSA security director at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, where two body scanners are in use at one checkpoint.

Schear said the scanners could eventually replace metal detectors at the nation’s 2,000 airport checkpoints and the pat-downs done on passengers who need extra screening. “We’re just scratching the surface of what we can do with whole-body imaging,” Schear said.

The TSA effort could encourage scanners’ use in rail stations, arenas and office buildings, the American Civil Liberties Union said. “This may well set a precedent that others will follow,” said Barry Steinhardt, head of the ACLU technology project.

Scanners are used in a few courthouses, jails and U.S. embassies, as well as overseas border crossings, military checkpoints and some foreign airports such as Amsterdam’s Schiphol.

The scanners bounce harmless “millimeter waves” off passengers who are selected to stand inside a portal with arms raised after clearing the metal detector. A TSA screener in a nearby room views the black-and-white image and looks for objects on a screen that are shaded differently from the body. Finding a suspicious object, a screener radios a colleague at the checkpoint to search the passenger.

The TSA says it protects privacy by blurring passengers’ faces and deleting images right after viewing. Yet the images are detailed, clearly showing a person’s gender. “You can actually see the sweat on someone’s back,” Schear said.

The scanners aim to strengthen airport security by spotting plastic and ceramic weapons and explosives that evade metal detectors and are the biggest threat to aviation. Government audits have found that screeners miss a large number of weapons, bombs and bomb parts such as wires and timers that agents sneak through checkpoints.

UK: Schools Had CCTV Cameras in Toilets

School removes CCTV cameras from children’s toilets after furious protest from parents

Daily Mail
February 21, 2008

A school has been forced to remove CCTV cameras they installed in the students’ toilets after furious protests from pupils and parents.

Hundreds of outraged students petitioned against the cameras after they spotted them in the toilets and even refused to use the loos all day so they were not caught on CCTV.

Other children were kept at home by their families rather than expose themselves to the “gross invasion of privacy”.

The cameras were installed at Lipson Community College in Plymouth, Devon, which has 1,400 pupils.

Government wants personal details of every traveller

Ian Traynor
Guardian
February 23 2008

Passengers travelling between EU countries or taking domestic flights would have to hand over a mass of personal information, including their mobile phone numbers and credit card details, as part of a new package of security measures being demanded by the British government. The data would be stored for 13 years and used to “profile” suspects.

Brussels officials are already considering controversial anti-terror plans that would collect up to 19 pieces of information on every air passenger entering or leaving the EU. Under a controversial agreement reached last summer with the US department of homeland security, the EU already supplies the same information [19 pieces] to Washington for all passengers flying between Europe and the US.

But Britain wants the system extended to sea and rail travel, to be applied to domestic flights and those between EU countries. According to a questionnaire circulated to all EU capitals by the European commission, the UK is the only country of 27 EU member states that wants the system used for “more general public policy purposes” besides fighting terrorism and organised crime.
