National Guard Performs Police Duties During G20 Summit

As military police run internal checkpoints across the nation and America officially sinks deeper into martial law, a security force of nearly 5,000 is deployed on the streets of Pittsburgh to undertake “crowd control” of demonstrations against the G20 summit. Nearly 2,500 National Guard troops including Army and Air Force personnel worked in tangent with over 1,200 state troopers.
As we reported earlier today, uniformed soldiers are being deployed all over the country to fulfill roles normally ascribed to police as Americans are incrementally conditioned that men in cammo with machine guns will now provide “security” in the new Amerika.
Part of that “security” includes dealing with civil unrest and crowd control, a role also being undertaken by the 20,000 battle hardened troops that are being redeployed inside America under Northcom after returning from Iraq. In the meantime, the Pentagon is attempting to station a further 379,000 active duty troops inside the U.S., a plan being fiercely opposed by the National Governors Association.
2,500 Guardsmen have been used for “Operation Steel Kickoff,” the description of which by the DefenseLink website sounds more like a military assault than an act of peacekeeping.

“Operation Steel Kickoff started Sept. 20 with a joint reception, staging, onward movement and integration point process led by the Guard’s 213th Area Support Group, which is working out of a hangar at the 171st Air Refueling Wing in Coraopolis, Pa.,” reports DefenseLink.
“We’re the support role, helping the soldiers and airmen get out and do the things they need to do,” said Army 1st Lt. Matthew Springer, the team leader for Operation Steel Kickoff’s JRSOI process. “Our focus is on ensuring the war fighter is getting the things they need to be successful in their mission.”
The Guardsmen’s “mission” as he termed was to work with the Army and Air Force to “help local, state and federal authorities keep Pittsburgh safe as demonstrators take to the streets in protest of the worldwide economic summit”. Troops are trained and performed, “movement techniques, formations and crowd and riot control.”
“We’re working hard right now because we have Army and Air Force members who haven’t trained together before,” said Army Sgt. 1st Class Ronald Bittner, a platoon leader from 1/110th, D Company. “We are working to mesh, because we all take a lot of pride in this mission.”
“This is definitely a different mission,” said Air Force Master Sgt. Pauline Gonzalez, a 23-year veteran and personnel specialist with the 211th Engineering Installation Squadron. “It’s very hard and very challenging, but it’s been a rewarding experience.”
The fact that soldiers see it as a “rewarding experience” to completely violate the oath that they swore by undertaking duties totally at odds with Posse Comitatus, the law that bars the military from engaging in law enforcement duties, is a damning indictment of how far the specter of troops on the streets has seeped into everyday life in America.
Since the G20 summit America has never looked more like the streets of Communist China or Nazi Germany as far as the lack of respect of rights of the individual, this is the darkest historical period in America, especially given the fact that during the G20 demonstration a protester was abducted by Military thugs in an unmarked vehicle.
Here is a video showing an unmarked vehicle drive up to a side street near Baum Ave & S Millvale Ave in Pittsburgh during the protests. Men in military fatigues wrestle with the protester as other men in cammo exit the vehicle. The protester is shoved forcefully into the car as the military men follow him in and the car speeds away and disappear into the tear-gas filled sky.
The claims that troops were only there to “make sure the citizens are protected” does not match up with what occurred on the streets, there was very little tolerance for the expression free speech and looked like scenes right out of Red Dawn. After the G20 protest, I assure you what Pittsburgh residents felt was not the feeling of protection but rather pure terror.

A new phenomenon, police using military sound weapons used in battlefields against Somali pirates and insurgents were deployed at the G20 summit protest, this was the very first time LRAD devices were actually used on American people. Just recently San Diego police department felt the need to deploy an LRAD device at town hall meetings but were never used on the Tea Party protesters that are against Obama’s health care reform. LRADs are a torture device used to control Somali pirates or insurgents that can cause serious and lasting health problems. Since G20, LRADs are now officially apart of the police arsenal against all civil disobedience in the country, whether it’s a small local protest or a massive demonstration like the G20 summit.

Under the pretext of “helping” local communities short of police in difficult economic times, as well as preparations for a potential swine flu pandemic, U.S. troops are now occupying America as the country sinks into a state of de facto martial law.
We have been inundated with reports over the last few weeks of uniformed soldiers and National Guardsmen running internal checkpoints all over the country as a frightening “Red Dawn” scenario unfolds not with a bang but with a whimper.
The military are now being called upon to undertake roles normally designated to police as Americans are incrementally acclimated to accept the presence of troops on the streets as an everyday occurrence.
The latest case occurred in Kingman Arizona, where National Guardsmen were filmed “providing security” and directing traffic.
Another similar example occurred in Newport Kentucky earlier this month when military checkpoints suddenly appeared downtown on September 6. Military Police from the U.S. Army National as well as Marines were purportedly conducting “traffic control” because the city was strapped for funds and did not have enough police to do the job.
The excuse that troops are stepping in to help because there is a lack of police doesn’t wash. Crime is down over the last 20 years, there are around three times more police and the state is not calling out the National Guard, they are being put on the streets as a result of the harmonization of police and military, a process that has been ongoing for decades, long before the economic recession hit. Troops also have guns and their primary function is to search people and vehicles, not direct traffic.
Members of the WeAreChange Ohio group interviewed some of the troops, who when asked if they would be prepared to “confiscate guns, shoot resisters in the back of the head, or throw people into ovens to incinerate bodies,” refused to categorically deny that they would follow such orders.

However, this was by no means the first time that troops have been used to fulfil roles normally ascribed to police in Kentucky.
During the Kentucky Derby on May 2 this year, Military Police were on patrol to deal with crowd control. An Associated Press photograph shows armed MP’s detaining a man who ran onto the track following the 135th Kentucky Derby horse race at Churchill Downs.
“The military has NO BUSINESS policing the citizens except during extraordinarily exceptional times of national emergency by an executive order. This is very disturbing and completely un-American. Maybe even more disturbing is that no one seems to care how quietly and easily we have accepted the burgeoning police state,” one respondent to the photo stated.
As we reported last year, U.S. troops returning from Iraq are now occupying America, running checkpoints and training to deal with “civil unrest and crowd control” under the auspices of a Northcom program that by 2011 will have no less than 20,000 active duty troops deployed inside America to “help” state and local officials during times of emergency.
Over the course of the last couple of years, we have reported on numerous instances of military involvement with local law enforcement in violation of Posse Comitatus.
In January, soldiers from the Virginia National Guard. Soldiers from the Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion, 116th Brigade Combat Team, were used to conduct personal searches at checkpoints in Washington DC for the inauguration of Barack Obama.
In March, we reported on U.S. Army troops dispatched to patrol the streets of Samson, Alabama, after a murder spree.
On April 6, we reported on a DHS, federal, state, Air Force, and local law enforcement checkpoint in Tennessee. On April 3, Infowars was instrumental in the cancellation of a seatbelt checkpoint that was to be conducted in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and the 251st Military Police in Bolivar, Tennessee.
Last December, we reported on the Marine Corps Air and Ground Combat Center dispatching troops to work with police on checkpoints in in San Bernardino County, California.
On April 22, we reported the deployment of 400 National Guard Combat Support Battalion troops to “maintain public order” at the Boston Marathon.
Last June, Infowars posted an article by D. H. Williams of the Daily Newscaster reporting the deployment of 2,300 Marines in the city of Indianapolis under the direction of FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.
We also reported a story on April 22 covering the assault of a local television news team by an irate police officer in El Paso, Texas. A video taken by the news videographer shows uniformed soldiers working with police officers at the scene of a car accident.
In september 2008 at the RNC protesters were greeted with imposing lines of sheilded National Guardsmen at security checkpoints, over 1,200 National Guard members from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Alaska attended the protest.

Blackwater training U.S. local police a new trend

There are many police and law enforcement officials who are concerned with the growing trend of using military-experienced mercenaries to train and work with local police officers in the United States, but there are many who believe the events of September 11, 2001 dictate the need for this new paradigm.
For example, Kentucky’s Lexington Police Department contracted Blackwater Security International to provide what’s described as homeland security training. Meanwhile that city’s Mayor Jim Newberry and its chief of police Anthony Beatty refused free training provided by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement federal program that prepares police officers to enforce immigration and border security as part of their duties.
Lexington is on the nation’s list of so-called Sanctuary Cities in which police officers are prohibited from working with ICE or Border Patrol agents in the United States. Critics are angry over the use of local tax dollars to hire Blackwater personnel to train the police.
But Lexington isn’t the only city using hired guns to help local police officers. In New Orleans, heavily armed operatives from the Blackwater private security firm, infamous for their work in Iraq, are openly patrolling the streets of that beleaguered city.
Some of the mercenaries were reportedly “deputized” by the Louisiana governor and were issued gold Louisiana State law enforcement badges to wear on their chests and Blackwater photo identification
cards to be worn on their arms.

We are witnessing the last vestiges of freedom vanish before our very eyes, 3 bills have been introduced to the House that will completely lock-down the 2nd amendment for good. The U.S. Government has the 1st and 2nd amendment by the throat, if any of these Orwellian bills pass the Senate we will see the last chapter of the American Republic.
Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush introduced “Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009” (HR 45) which will create a federal licensure system of gun owners who must fill out an application that includes a photo, address, all previous aliases, thumb print and will make all buyers undergo a mental health screening in order own a “Blair Holt” gun license. The bill gives U.S. Attorney General complete power over who gets permission to obtain a gun license, those who have permission will be required to unload the firearms and lock them up in gun safes, thus completely rendering the owner from using the gun for self-defense.
H.R. 45 will also make it illegal for a licensed gun owner to fail to report a missing gun or theft within 72 hours or fail to report a change of address within 60 days. If a minor obtains a firearm and injures someone with it, the owner of the gun will face a multiple-year jail sentence. [Source]
Another anti-gun bill introduced by House Democrat Carolyn McCarthy called the “No Fly, No Buy Act” (HR 2401), if passed the Senate it will merge the TSA’s no-fly list with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), a point-of-sale system that determines the customer’s eligibility to purchase a firearm in the United States. The NICS was created in November of 1993 when the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 (Brady Act) was signed into law. The permanent provisions of the Brady Act went into effect on November 30, 1998 and required the U.S. Attorney General to establish NICS.
H.R. 2401 sponsor, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy stressed the importance of passing the No Fly No Buy Act, saying: “For far too long, the terror gap has left a wide open loophole in our nation’s gun safety laws that could allow terrorists to acquire guns the same way any law abiding citizen can. The No Fly, No Buy Act uses existing TSA data to update the NICS system with the names of known or suspected terrorists to disqualify them from passing the Brady Background Check. This is a common sense gun bill that will prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands,”. Co-sponsor of the bill, Steve Israel agrees with her sentiment, stressing “the importance of keeping guns out of the hands of people that are known or suspected terrorists”. [Source]
On May 15, 2007, former Congressman Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) now Obama’s Chief of Staff, speaks at DC’s annual “Stand Up For a Safe America” event sponsored by the Brady Center. Emanuel is quoted saying that we need a president that will “make sure we have once again an assault weapon ban, a Brady Bill with a full force of the law of the land,” “if you are on the No-Fly List because you are known as maybe a possible terrorist; you cannot buy a handgun in America.” “If you’re on that No-Fly List, your access to the right to bear arms is cancelled because you’re not part of the American family, you don’t deserve that right, there is no right for you if you’re on that terrorist list.”
There is over one million Americans on TSA’s no-fly database and the list continues to grow at an astronomical rate. These people are not Islamic terrorists this War on Terror fraud would make you believe, these are Americans, people like Sen. Ted Kennedy, CNN reporter Drew Griffin and even an 8-year old child!
Another recent bill that will give the A.G. complete control titled the “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009” (HR 2159) to the House Committee on Judiciary. The bill would “increase public safety by permitting the Attorney General to deny the transfer of a firearm or the issuance of firearms or explosives licenses to a known or suspected dangerous terrorist.”.
Executive director of Gun Owners of America, Larry Pratt is worried that this bill will be used in correlation with Homeland Security’s domestic terrorism memos that label the alternative news media, returning veterans, activists in support of the Constitution, Gun Rights, activists against the Iraq war, illegal immigration or the New World Order as potential terrorists.
Pratt says, “This bill would enable the attorney general to put all of the people who voted against Obama on no-gun lists, because according to the DHS, they’re all potential terrorists. Actually, we could rename this bill the Janet Napolitano Frenzied Fantasy Implementation Act of 2009.” Obama’s Attorney General pick Eric Holder is rabidly anti-gun, during his tenure with the Clinton administration he aimed at driving the nation’s gun dealers and manufacturers out of business. [Source] If any of these anti-gun bills pass it will give Eric Holder absolute power on who gets to own guns, these bills have absolutely nothing to do with stopping Islamic terrorism but all to do about oppressing the American people.
After 9/11, Eric Holder wrote a Washington Post op-ed titled “Keeping Guns Away From Terrorists” arguing that a new law should give the BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) a record of every gun sale. He also stated that potential gun buyers should be checked against the secret “watch lists” compiled by various government entities. To strengthen his point he concluded that Osama Bin Laden would be able to purchase unregistered firearms at American gun shows if these measures were not met.
This year, Second Amendment attorney Stephen Halbrook during Attorney General Eric Holder’s confirmation hearing made it clear that Eric Holder is vehemently opposed to the right of the American people to bear arms. Unfortunately there was no mention of Holder’s role in the Waco and the Ruby Ridge massacre during his Clinton tenure.:
Obama and his administration will most likely obliterate the 2nd amendment with staunch anti-gun creatures like Rahm Emanuel and Eric Holder. Lou Dobbs just recently reported that Obama is in favor of ratifying CIFTA, an International Gun-Control Treaty that prevents ‘illicit’ manufacturing of firearms, ammunition and explosive materials. According to Gun Owners of America ‘illicit’ manufacturing includes the simple task of reloading or modifying a firearm in any way. [Source]
Obama has also refereed the D.C. handgun ban as ‘constitutional’, he also leaked a gun ban list that would make millions of Americans potential criminals and placed anti-gun legislation in his stimulus bill.
In other news, a dire warning was sent to the Alex Jones show by an 11B Infantryman based in Fort Campbell, Kentucky shows that active duty military personnel are being secretly ordered to submit all information to their Chain of Command on all firearms they own privately, their location as well of details of any Concealed Carry permits. In an e-mail with the attached document the soldier writes: “I live off post, with my firearms (which I don’t bring on post for any reason). A very frightening thing happened at work yesterday, I was ordered to fill out a list containing my firearm information. This included make, model, caliber, and serial number of all firearms I currently posses. In addition, I was also required to list registration information, location of all weapons individually, and information regarding any CCW permits I posses.”
The infantryman continues saying he had been in Fort Campbell for almost 8 years and never encountered anything like this before: “I don’t know how high this goes, but I am hearing that this is going on in other units at Fort Campbell as well. It just seems a little coincidental to me that within 90 days: the most anti-firearm President in history is inaugurated, some of the nastiest anti-firearm laws are put on the table in Washington, and then the Army comes around wanting what amounts to a registration on all firearms, even if they are off post, and doesn’t provide any reason or purpose as to why. I fear something really nasty is blowing in the wind here.”
Indeed, we aren’t in Kansas anymore, Homeland Security and the U.S. Government are making it crystal clear its agenda to stifle all dissent against the U.S. Government, if you do not obey, you will be considered a potential terrorist extremist and you will no longer be “apart of the American family” as Rahm Emanuel put it. You will be denied of owning any firearms but even if you do have permission to own firearms you will have to follow many procedures in order to own guns or face harsh penalties.

Homeland Security Calls Free Speech Terrorism

The American way of life is under attack by the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Government. There are 2 pending bills in the U.S. House of Representatives that may eventually pass the Senate and become law. These bills will make “hostile speech” and prejudice a felony, it is the first step in ensuring the destruction of the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
The House already passed a bill titled “The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Act of 2009” (HR 1913) allowing the federal government to aid local/state and tribal governments to prosecute any crime motivated by prejudice (in terms of race, religion, personal sexual orientation, gender identity and disability). The whole point of the 1st amendment is to protect offensive speech, not polite speech. If this bill passes the Senate this will mean the official end of free speech in America as we know it.
This bill could lead to an age of “Pre-Crime”, if say the FBI suspects you of potentially committing a hate crime you can be prosecuted even if no crime was even committed. But still this remains to be seen.
The other bill that was introduced by the House recently is called the “Megan Meier Cyber-bullying Prevention Act” (HR 1966) if passed the Senate it will lead to fines and up to 2 years in prison if anyone uses popular online media outlets (such as blogs, myspace, facebook, twitter etc.) to cause “substantial emotional distress through severe repeated and hostile speech”. In other words, if you hurt someones feelings on the internet you could be put in prison or fined!
There was a somewhat similar Orwellian piece of legislation that never passed the Senate called the “Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007” (S.1959, otherwise known as the Thought Crimes Bill) which would have given Homeland Security the authority to fund Universities to study ways to stop “extremist belief systems” and “radical ideologies” of Americans. Homeland Security released 3 new memos claiming civil disobedience, the alternative news media and dissent against the U.S. government are extremist activities.
The most recent memo titled the “Domestic Extremism Lexicon”, mixes peaceful activists in with prison gangs and criminals. Here is a small list of so-called extremists according to the DHS and I&A:
Alternative Media – Various information sources (online) that interpret events that are different from the mainstream media.
Rightwing Activists – Those who are anti-income tax, pro-sovereignty, anti-illegal immigration, support the U.S. Constitution and bill of rights, pro-militias, anti-new world order, anti-north american union, anti-abortion protesters.
Leftwing Activists – Those who support animal rights, environmentalism, anti-war activism, those who are communist/socialist or anti-capitalists and anarchists. (black bloc are agent provocateurs)
Civil Disobedience – The things Martin Luther King and Ghandi have done are now considered extremism according to Homeland Security! Protesting and the right to assemble in a peaceful manner is now considered an EXTREME act, amazing!
Leaderless Resistance – Individuals acting independently and anonymously outside formal organizational structures. This probably means groups like the Truth/Patriot Movement who fight against the New World Order and question things like the Federal Reserve and 9/11. We are totally non-violent and only seek to wage an information-war against One World Government. But like any leaderless group we are prone to violent infiltrators and Black-ops/Psy-Ops by the mainstream media to paint us as evil and dangerous terrorists.
Hackers – Script kiddies, website defacers, DOS’ers are now a potential extremist threat.
All of these non-violent groups are being lumped-up with prison gangs, criminals, racist groups like white supremacists, black power advocates, Mexican pro-atzlan separatists. They want to demonize 1st amendment activists, blurring the line between free speech and terrorism, blurring the line between crime and terrorism. Basically they are conditioning the public to believe that all crime is now terrorism!
Another new, yet very similar unclassified memo by Homeland Security called the “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” states the: “prolonged economic downturn” could lead to “fertile recruitment” of returning Iraq veterans by “rightwing extremists” to cause violence against the U.S. Government.
The memo says the increase of concern of loss of sovereignty, illegal immigration, emerging gun-control treaties will cause rightwing groups to turn to terrorism, the memo states: “they are highly critical of the U.S. government’s response to illegal immigration and oppose government programs that are designed to extend rights to illegal aliens, such as issuing driver’s licenses or national identification cards and providing in-state tuition, medical benefits or public education.”.
2 points id like to make; 1) There was never a case where a rightwing group has caused terrorism at the southern border, and 2) how else does the government expect Americans to react when our own government supports people who break the law?
The memo also outlandishly claims anti-New World Order “conspiracy theorists” are violent rightwing extremists and the memo claims the New World Order is only based on Communism and has nothing to do with the Anglo-American internationalist’s quest for a world system. They further claim that anti-New World Order theorists are violent and strongly anti-Jewish. They also claim the April 4th shooting of 3 police officers in Pittsburgh was carried out by a conspiracy theorist that was against “Jewish-controlled One World Government”. This is just some more demonization of people who are having an effect and speaking truth to power.
This memo is a lot similar to a 2006 document revealing the Bush Administration was targeting 9/11 “conspiracy theorists” claiming al-qaeda terrorism springs from: “subcultures of conspiracy and misinformation,” and that “terrorists recruit more effectively from populations whose information about the world is contaminated by falsehoods and corrupted by conspiracy theories. The distortions keep alive grievances and filter out facts that would challenge popular prejudices and self-serving propaganda.” [Page 10]
The last new-memo I will summarize is the MIAC Strategic Report that was given to Missouri law enforcement officers indicated that presidential candidates; Chuck Baldwin, Ron Paul and Bob Barr are terrorists!
Infowars.com broke the story when radio talk-show host Alex Jones received a copy of the MIAC report from an anonymous source in the Missouri police department. Infowars.com writes: “The MIAC report specifically describes supporters of presidential candidates Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr as ‘militia’ influenced terrorists and instructs the Missouri police to be on the lookout for supporters displaying bumper stickers and other paraphernalia associated with the Constitutional, Campaign for Liberty, and Libertarian parties,”. State law enforcement across the nation already have “fusion centers” to crack down on the patriot/liberty movement. [Source]
These are stunning events in the history of America, more and more ordinary peaceful Americans are being hassled for having a belief that freedom is an individual’s inalienable constitutional right and should not be controlled by the bureaucracy of big government.
This month in Louisiana a driver was stopped, questioned and detained for having a “Don’t Tread On Me” bumper sticker on his car. The driver’s sister-in-law reported that the police officer told him “he had a subversive survivalist bumper sticker on his car.” and that the driver was suspect of “extremist” activities, she continued: “They proceeded to keep him there on the side of the road while they ran whatever they do to see if you have a record, keeping him standing by the side of the road for 30 minutes,”. [Source] Another bumper sticker stop happened in Las Vegas in 2008, a driver was pulled over and questioned. After, the driver headed to his car and the officer said “you know why we had to do this right?”, the officer repeated his comment and pointed at RON PAUL and INFOWARS.COM bumper stickers on the back of his vehicle. Want more? A Michigan man stopped, handcuffed, assaulted and branded “unpatriotic” and was subjected to a search of his car, during the search drugs were allegedly planted, all for distributing DVD’s about 9/11 Truth. [Source] In 2004 a Kentucky carpenter distributed Ron Paul and Alex Jones videotapes to a state trooper. A week later he was pulled over, arrested and almost faced a year in jail. [Source] A bible college student in Texas was accused by Homeland Security and FBI agents of “committing acts of terror and espionage” after talking to Boy Scouts about the U.S. Constitution! [Source]
I hope many of you feel dejected enough by this information to take some action. But if not, there are a few other documents you should take a look at:
The “Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Law Enforcement Pamphlet” identifies citizens who buy baby formula, beer, wearing Levi’s Jeans, traveling with a drivers license and traveling with women and children to considered to be dangerous terrorists! A Virginia Training Manual used to help state employees help identify terrorists, it lists anti-government, property rights activists, people who use binoculars, video cameras and notepads. And last but not least, a Pheonix 9/11 Manual disseminated amongst federal employees revealed potential terrorist as “defenders of the U.S. Constitution against federal government and the United Nations,” and individuals who “make numerous references to the U.S. Constitution.”.
The U.S. Government has become so tyrannical, so corrupt, it has transformed from a “government of the people” into a bureaucratic big brother police state because we allowed ourselves to become distracted from what is of utmost importance; freedom and the preservation of liberty for future generations.
We are now entering the final phase of a New World Order, where internationalist elite control all government to be in favor of a One World Fascist Dictatorship, worse than what George Orwell ever wrote about. A modern era of totalitarianism maintained by a technology-driven control grid, where infra-red spy satellites used by law enforcement can see through your house, drones that can keep an eye on your vehicle, taxing you by the mile, ticketing you when you run a red light. Iris-scanners and bio-scanner cameras at airports measuring your body temperature, pulse and breathing to make sure you aren’t a terrorist. Microchips that control every aspect of your daily life.
George Orwell’s chilling warning of a regime out of control seeking to rule every waking moment of a persons life is not so far off from today and the future of the 21st century. The question is, will this be the picture of what is to come.

A Kentucky jury convicted Wesley Lanham and Shawn Freeman, both former deputy jailers, on federal civil rights, conspiracy and obstruction charges, the Justice Department announced today. The defendants, former deputies at the Grant County Detention Center, were found guilty of conspiring to violate the civil rights of a teenage traffic offender when they arranged for him to be raped by inmates. The jury convicted the defendants on all charges and specifically found that the defendants were responsible for the aggravated sexual assault carried out by the inmates.
The defendants face up to life in prison when they are sentenced on Dec. 8, 2008.
The case stemmed from an incident that occurred on Valentine’s Day in 2003, when the defendants, along with their supervisor, former Sergeant Shawn Sydnor, taunted an 18-year-old high school student who had been brought to the detention center on a speeding charge. The deputies teased the teenager about his physical appearance and told him that he would make a good “girlfriend” for the other inmates. The defendants then solicited a group of convicted felons housed in a general population cell to scare the teenager. After eliciting an agreement from the inmates, the officers left the teenager in the cell where he was sexually assaulted by the other inmates.

U.S. Forest Service officers pointed weapons at children and fired rubber bullets and pepper spray balls at Rainbow Family members while making arrests Thursday evening, according to witnesses.
“They were so violent, like dogs,” Robert Parker told reporter Deborah Stevens of the libertarian-oriented, Round Rock, Texas-based We the People Radio Network [www.wtprn.com] after the incident.
“People yelled at them, ’You’re shooting children,’” Parker said during an interview on the network’s “Rule of Law Show.”

No matter what you think of blogging, Internet-based citizen journalism is a real threat, not just to traditional media business models but to totalitarian governments. How do we know that bloggers are drawing blood? Because some governments are hitting back harder and harder; last year saw a tripling in the number of bloggers arrested around the world compared to 2006, according to a report from the University of Washington.
“Last year, 2007, was a record year for blogger arrests, with three times as many as in 2006. Egypt, Iran and China are the most dangerous places to blog about political life, accounting for more than half of all arrests since blogging became big,” said Assistant Professor Phil Howard, lead author of the World Information Access Report. Howard also suggests that the real number of arrests may be much higher, as not every arrest makes it into the media.
The report separates the reason for arrests into six categories: violation of cultural norms, blogging involved with social protest, blogging about public policy, blogging about political figures, exposing corruption or human rights violations, and finally “other.” In addition to Iran, Egypt and China, Middle Eastern regimes in Syria and Saudi Arabia, and South East Asian nations such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand also figure in the report. 2007 saw 36 bloggers arrested around the world, and since 2003 at least 64 have been arrested, with a total of 940 months of prison time served.
Even liberal democracies are not immune; France, Canada, the USA, and UK have all arrested people following their blogging activity since 2004. However, some of these cases might not seem so egregious; last year a blogger was arrested in Los Angeles following his postings about his attraction to young girls, and the beginning of 2008 saw an arrest in the UK after one Gavin Best used his blog to threaten a police officer’s family following his arrest for a large number of thefts.
Another troubling trend has been the complicity of western Internet firms such as Yahoo and Google, both of whom have handed over details of bloggers to the Chinese government, despite publicly condemning such policies.
