Cheney & Rove Win Plame Suit Dismissal Appeal

Cheney & Rove Win Plame Suit Dismissal Appeal

Bloomberg
August 12, 2008

A federal appeals court today upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit accusing U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, former White House political adviser Karl Rove and former Cheney aide I. Lewis Libby of illegally conspiring to reveal the identity of a CIA agent.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said a trial judge was correct to dismiss the suit by Valerie Plame, who worked at the Central Intelligence Agency’s headquarters in Virginia, and her husband, former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson. They sued the three and former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage in July 2006.

Plame and Wilson accused the four men of violating their constitutional rights by leaking Plame’s identity to the media in retaliation for a New York Times opinion piece by Wilson that questioned the Bush administration’s basis for going to war in Iraq.

The decision “allows outrageous government conduct to go unpunished,’’ said Melanie Sloan of Citizens for Responsibility & Ethics in Washington, a watchdog group that represented Plame and Wilson. She said the group is considering asking the full D.C. Circuit to review the case and an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

White House memo exposes Rove knew of problems with anthrax vaccine

Raw Story
August 7, 2008

The Department of Defense continued its controversial mandatory anthrax vaccinations program despite high ranking Bush administration officials acknowledging there were problems with the vaccine within months of the Bush administration taking office—well before the 9/11 attacks and the October 2001 anthrax letters.

A 2001 memorandum from former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove to then-Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz indicates that the White House knew of problems relating to the Gulf War Syndrome and the military’s controversial anthrax vaccine.

Obtained by RAW STORY earlier this year from a senior military official and referenced in today’s New York Daily News, Rove wrote, “I do think we need to examine the issues of both Gulf War Syndrome and the Anthrax vaccine and how they can be dealt with. They are political problems for us.”

Judiciary Committee approves contempt charge for Karl Rove

Raw Story
July 30, 2008

The House Judiciary Committee has voted 20-14 to approve a contempt of Congress resolution against former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove for his failure to appear after a Congressional subpoena.

Voting along party lines Wednesday morning, the committee said Rove broke the law by failing to appear at a July 10 hearing on allegations of White House influence over the Justice Department, including whether Rove encouraged prosecutions against Democrats.

The committee decision is a recommendation. It remains unclear whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will allow a final vote.

Rove has denied any involvement with Justice Department decisions, and the White House has said Congress has no authority to compel testimony from current and former advisers.

Yesterday afternoon, a coalition of groups including CREDO Mobile, People For the American Way, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, The Nation, Campaign for America’s Future, and Progress Now, delivered a petition calling for Rove’s contempt to Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA).

“I think it’s ridiculous that Karl Rove thinks that he doesn’t have to follow the law,” Sanchez said in a release. “Nobody in this country should be above the law.”

Excerpts from the markup memo of the resolution sent to reporters follows. Rove was overseas at the time of the hearing and alleged that the trip had been planned in advance.

4 arrested for attempting citizens arrest on Karl Rove

4 arrested for attempting citizens arrest on Karl Rove

Iowa Politics
July 25, 2008

Four Iowans were arrested today while attempting to make a Citizens’ Arrest of Karl Rove in Des Moines, Iowa. Citing Iowa Code provisions for making Citizen’s Arrests as well as citing Federal Statute violations they claimed Rove had violated, the four were stopped at the gate of the Wakonda Country Club in Des Moines where Rove was scheduled to speak at a Republican Fundraiser.

The four arrested were retired Methodist minister and Peace and Justice Advocate, Rev. Chet Guinn, 80, as well as three Des Moines Catholic Workers, Edward Bloomer, 61, Kirk Brown, 25, and Mona Shaw, 57. All four were cited for trespassing and released.

The four maintained that they were acting within the guidelines of Iowa Code that obligate private citizens to make such an arrest if they believe a felony has been committed and turn Rove over to police officials to bring Rove before a judge for formal indictment. By law, a federal judge should consider the charges and determine if an indictment should be made.

Brown and Shaw made a similar attempt last March when Rove spoke at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Brown and Shaw were arrested and released without charges following that attempt. Deaths in the Middle East since the March attempt number in the thousands including, 151 more US troops have been killed in Iraq, and 284 killed in Afghanistan as well as far more citizens of those two nations.

Rove remains unindicted and recently refused to cooperate with a Congressional subpoena in the Valerie Plame leak investigation. Despite mounting evidence of Rove’s wrongdoing concerning leading the U.S. to war as well as other actions, Congress and the U.S. judicial system remain reluctant to bring charges against either Rove or the Bush administration. Recent evidence includes Articles of Impeachment that will again be presented by Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich tomorrow. Vincent Bugliosi’s new book “The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder” carefully lays out a case against Bush and his administration for war crimes and felony murder. Bugliosi was prosecutor for the Charles Manson Family murders and author of the book “Helter Skelter,” which dealt with that crime.

To date there have been 4125 US Military deaths in Iraq, 896 in Afghanistan, 66,775 casualties (wounded as well as those removed for other injuries and illnesses), and more than 200,000 Iraqi and Afghani citizens killed and many, many more wounded.

Conyers: These Are Not Impeachment Hearings

George Washington’s Blog
July 23, 2008

John Conyers is now taking the position that no one at Friday’s impeachment hearing can accuse Bush or Cheney of any crime, or any impeachable offense, or dishonorable conduct, or even lying.

Moreover, Conyers is now saying that he will shut the hearing down if anyone does accuse the boys of crimes, impeachable offenses, or otherwise being naughty.

As David Swanson summarizes it:

“Apparently the rules of Congress are designed to allow impeachable offenses to be discussed only in impeachment hearings. Apparently this didn’t occur to Chairman Conyers when he decided to hold a non-impeachment impeachment hearing. As a result, his hearing may be quickly shut down, and he will have a choice of holding a real impeachment hearing, resigning, or dropping the pretense that he intends to resist Cheney and Bush in any way whatsoever.”

Update: Conyers gives Rove 5 days to comply before pursuing ’all available options’

Former White House adviser Karl Rove has ignored a subpoena from congressional Democrats to testify about allegations of political pressure at the Justice Department and his alleged role in the prosecution of a former governor of Alabama.

A House subcommittee voted 7-1 Thursday to reject Rove’s claim that executive privilege freed him from an obligation to testify, leaving open the possibility the Republican political guru will be held in contempt.

During the hearing, Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT) revealed that Rove was out of the country. According to the liberal blog ThinkProgress, Rove’s lawyer’s confirmed that Rove was out of the country on a trip scheduled long before the subpoena was sent.

Karl Rove failed to appear before the House Judiciary subcommittee. His lawyer revealed that he was out of the country.

House Judiciary Panel Threatens Rove With Contempt

Think Progress
July 3, 2008

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee received a letter from Karl Rove’s attorney Robert Luskin, stating that his client refuses to testify before a House subcommittee, despite a congressional subpoena. He reiterated his offer to have Rove appear for an off-the-record interview, not under oath, about the prosecution of formerly Alabama governor Don Siegelman only. In a response to Luskin, Reps. John Conyers (D-MI) and Linda Sanchez (D-CA) reject the offer:

We want to make clear that the Subcommittee will convene as scheduled and expects Mr. Rove to appear, and that a refusal to appear in violation of the subpoena could subject Mr. Rove to contempt proceedings, including statutory contempt under federal law and proceedings under the inherent contempt authority of the House of Representatives.

Your letter states that Mr. Rove will not attend the hearing because he is “obligated” to disregard the subpoena as a result of the White House’s claim of immunity for former advisors. In fact, precisely the opposite is true. As a private party, Mr. Rove is “obligated” to comply with the subpoena issued to him and, at the very least, appear at the July 10 hearing.

In addition to the Siegelman matter, the committee has also asked Rove to testify on the politicization of the Justice Department, including the U.S. attorney scandal.

McClellan Will Testify Before House

McClellan Will Testify Before House

AP
June 10, 2008

President Bush’s former spokesman, Scott McClellan, will testify before a House committee next week about whether Vice President Dick Cheney ordered him to make misleading public statements about the leaking of CIA agent Valerie Plame’s identity.

McClellan will testify publicly and under oath before the House Judiciary Committee on June 20 about the White House’s role in the leak and its response, his attorneys, Michael and Jane Tigar, said on Monday.

In his new book, “What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception,” McClellan said he was misled by others, possibly including Cheney, about the role of I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby in the leak. McClellan has said publicly that Bush and Cheney “directed me to go out there and exonerate Scooter Libby.”

The statements prompted House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., to invite McClellan to the hearing “concerning reported attempts to cover up the involvement of White House officials in the leak of” Plame’s identity.

Plame’s CIA identity was leaked to the news media by several top Bush administration officials in 2003, including Libby and former top White House political adviser Karl Rove. Last July, Bush commuted Libby’s 2 1/2-year sentence, sparing him from serving any prison time after being convicted of perjury, obstructing justice and lying to the FBI.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., also is seeking more FBI documents about the leak in part because of McClellan’s description of the way he was instructed to respond to questions on the matter.

At Libby’s trial, witnesses testified that Cheney, Libby and other Bush administration officials mounted a campaign to counter criticism of the Iraq war by Plame’s husband, Joseph Wilson. Cheney’s spokeswoman, Cathie Martin, testified that Cheney personally wrote out statements and talking points for Libby and other aides to give to reporters to rebut Wilson’s allegations.

McClellin: Bush Admits Authorizing Plame Leak

Democracy Now
May 30, 2008

Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan took to the airwaves Thursday to explain his speaking out on his former bosses in the Bush administration. In a new memoir, McClellan accuses the administration of deliberately manipulating the public to wage the war on Iraq. McClellan also criticizes his former bosses for the handling of Hurricane Katrina and the CIA leak case. Appearing on the Today Show, McClellan said he had mistakenly allowed his personal admiration for President Bush to overshadow concerns about the deceptive rush to war in Iraq.

Scott McClellan: “I felt like we were rushing into this, but because of my position and my affection for the President and my belief and trust in he and his advisers, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. And looking back on it and reflecting on it now, I don’t think I should have.”

McClellan went on to say President Bush had personally told him he authorized the leak of former CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity. McClellan says he asked President Bush aboard Air Force One if he was the one who approved outing Plame to the media. McClellan says Bush replied, “Yes, I was.”

Former White House spokesman: Bush used ’propaganda’ to sell war

Update: Bush ’didn’t remember’ whether he’d tried cocaine, McClellan writes

In a new tell-all memoir on sale next week, former White House press secretary Scott McClellan writes that President Bush depended on propaganda to sell the Iraq war to the American public, The Politico reports.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, McClellan also reveals new details about allegations regarding Bush’s former drug use that shadowed his 2000 campaign.

McClellan tracks Bush’s penchant for self-deception back to an overheard incident on the campaign trail in 1999 when the then-governor was dogged by reports of possible cocaine use in his younger days.

The book recounts an evening in a hotel suite “somewhere in the Midwest.” Bush was on the phone with a supporter and motioned for McClellan to have a seat.

“’The media won’t let go of these ridiculous cocaine rumors,’ I heard Bush say. ’You know, the truth is I honestly don’t remember whether I tried it or not. We had some pretty wild parties back in the day, and I just don’t remember.’”

“I remember thinking to myself, How can that be?” McClellan wrote. “How can someone simply not remember whether or not they used an illegal substance like cocaine? It didn’t make a lot of sense.”

Bush, according to McClellan, “isn’t the kind of person to flat-out lie.”

“So I think he meant what he said in that conversation about cocaine. It’s the first time when I felt I was witnessing Bush convincing himself to believe something that probably was not true, and that, deep down, he knew was not true,” McClellan wrote. “And his reason for doing so is fairly obvious — political convenience.”

In the years that followed, McClellan “would come to believe that sometimes he convinces himself to believe what suits his needs at the moment.” McClellan likened it to a witness who resorts to “I do not recall.”

McClellan’s “surprisingly scathing” and “often harsh” What Happened: Inside the Bush White House… also contains, as Mike Allen writes for Politico, other standout revelations such as:

  • Bush and his aides “confused the propaganda campaign with the high level of candor and honesty so fundamentally needed to build and then sustain public support during a time of war”;

  • Some of McClellan’s assertions before the White House press corps were, in retrospect, “badly misguided”;

  • Karl Rove and Lewis “Scooter” Libby “had at best misled” McClellan about their roles in the notorious CIA leak case, even as McClellan publicly defended them;

  • The White House was in a “state of denial” during the first week after the Hurricane Katrina disaster;

  • Bush was “steamed” about his top economic adviser telling The Wall Street Journal that a possible Iraq war could cost as much as $200 billion. “He shouldn’t be talking about that,” said Bush, according to McClellan;

  • The press was “probably too deferential to the White House” when it came to public discourse over the choice to go to invade Iraq. McClellan also says the “White House press corps went too easy on the administration,” reports Allen.

Despite the book’s criticisms of the administration he once worked for, McClellan writes, “I still like and admire President Bush,” reserving most of his rancor for Bush’s top advisers, especially Karl Rove.

Fed Pumps Another $50 billion Into Banking System

Fed Pumps Another $50 billion Into Banking System

AP
April 8, 2008

The Federal Reserve, still working to combat the effects of a severe credit squeeze, said Tuesday that it had auctioned another $50 billion to cash-strapped banks.

Separately, some Fed officials said they were concerned about a “prolonged and severe” economic downturn when they cut interest rates last month.

The Fed auction marked the ninth in a series that began in December that so far have pumped $310 billion in short-term loans into the nation’s banking system.

Bernanke: “Recession Is Possible”

Reuters

April 4, 2008

For the second time this week, a senior Federal Reserve official conceded the United States economy could slip into recession, but suggested the central bank should wait to see if more rate cuts are needed.

“The economy has all but stalled and could contract over the first half of the year,” San Francisco Federal Reserve President Janet Yellen, who is not a voter on the policy-setting committee in 2008, said on Thursday.

“Current indicators suggest that, starting in the fourth quarter, the economy, at best, slowed to a crawl,” she said, adding later that the Fed is still battling a “negative feedback loop” of tight credit conditions, falling house prices and low consumer confidence.

Yellen’s remarks, in a speech to the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, echoed those from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke during testimony to a Congressional Joint Economic Committee on Wednesday.

“Recession is possible,” Bernanke said. “There’s a chance that for the first half as a whole, there might be a slight contraction.”

But, like Bernanke, Yellen declined to point the way toward additional interest rate cuts to pull the economy out of its malaise.

Instead, she forecast a minor pickup in growth in the second half on the back of rate cuts already in the pipeline, and “timely” fiscal stimulus checks — even though the drag from falling house prices will linger into 2009.

Fed rate cut plans up on weak jobs

U.S. short-term interest rate futures rose on Friday on news that U.S. firms cut payrolls for a third consecutive month, as dealers raised bets that the Federal Reserve will make an aggressive interest rate cut this month and beyond.

The implied prospects for the Fed to cut its benchmark lending rate by 50 basis points at the April 29-30 policy meeting hit 40 percent against 20 percent late on Thursday.

A smaller, 25 basis point rate cut from the Federal Open Market Committee, which would take the fed funds rate to 2 percent, is fully priced.

More than 50 percent chance of U.S. recession: Greenspan

Sonya Dowsett
Reuters
April 6, 2008

There is more than a 50 percent chance the United States could go into recession, former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan told El Pais newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.

However, the U.S. has not yet entered recessionary state marked by sharp falls in orders, strong rises in unemployment and intensive weakening of the economy, he said.

“We would have to see signs of this intensification: there are some, but not many yet,” he said. “Therefore … I would not describe the situation we are in as a recession, although the chances that we’ll have one are more than 50 percent.”

Students Call For Anti-Rove Activists To Be Tased

Students Call For Anti-Rove Activists To Be Tased

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars
March 30, 2008

During a “speech” at George Washington University late last week, Karl Rove, the neocon dirty trickster who learned everything he knows from the convicted criminal and Nixon fixer Donald Segretti, was interrupted by three people, one accusing him of war crimes and the other two unfurling a huge banner calling Bush’s former brain a war criminal. As should be expected, the largely young neocon and “conservative” audience reacted in a predictable manner.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlNm7kA9ojc

It was interesting, and indicative, when the students in the auditorium called for the activists to be tased, and although a few chuckled at the suggestion this is now indeed considered appropriate, sort of the way it was appropriate for Hitler’s Sturmabteilung, known as his “brownshirts,” to beat up and even murder the opposition. Instead of a neocon Ordnertruppen beating up the opposition, the Bushites depend on rentacops and police to do this, however the same vicious mindset is in play.Morning Joe, O’Reilly, Beck, Rivera, and other media neocons have accomplished their mission — it is now perfectly acceptable to call for non-violent demonstrators to be electrocuted with taser weapons, responsible for killing nearly 300 people since 2001. Remember, Morning Joe and his cohorts also called for beating 9/11 truth activists to a pulp and throwing them in detention camps. How long before the little neocons wannabes at Karl Rove events and Bush brownshirts begin demanding the opposition be rounded up and thrown in camps?

Former top Bush aide Karl Rove didn’t get the friendliest of receptions at the University of Iowa Sunday, CNN affiliate KCRG reports. Rove, who was paid $40,000 to speak at the University, was confronted with an at-times hostile crowd of 1,000, and was interrupted on several occasions. At one point during the speech, Rove reportedly lashed out at some of the students, saying, “You got a chance to ask your questions later and make your stupid statements, let me make mine.”Police also were forced to remove two people after they tried to perform a citizen’s arrest on Rove for what they said were his crimes while a member of the Bush Administration. At one point, a person asked Rove if he has ever shed a tear over the war in Iraq.

“I shed a lot of tears and I have been inspired by many of the people who feel their son or daughter should not have to die in vain,” he replied.

Toward the end of the speech a member of the crowd yelled, “Can we have our $40,000 back?”

Rove replied, “No, you can’t.”

Radio Iowa also reports one audience member told Rove that MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann named him the “worst person ever.”

“Ever?” Rove joked. “Yea, worse than Hitler, worse than Stalin, worse than Mao and worse than the person who introduced aluminum baseball bats.”

Cameras were only allowed to film the beginning of the speech.

Steve Watson

March 3, 2008

American investor, businessman and philanthropist Warren Buffett is the latest in a string of notable figures to concede that the US economy is now in recession.

Buffett, the largest shareholder and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway, and the third-richest person in the world, made the comments in an interview with cable network CNBC.

“I would say, by any commonsense definition, we are in a recession,” Buffett said.

His comments come on the back of an annual letter to shareholders (PDF), which he released Friday along with Berkshire’s 2007 financial report, in which he made similar warnings.

“It’s a certainty that insurance-industry profit margins, including ours, will fall significantly in 2008,” he said. “Prices are down, and exposures inexorably rise. Even if the U.S. has its third consecutive catastrophe-light year, industry profit margins will probably shrink by 4 percentage points or so.

“If the winds roar or the earth trembles, results could be far worse.”

Buffett is one of the most successful investors in the history and an economic expert.

He has previously warned of the expanding trade deficit’s slow devaluation of the dollar and other U.S. assets.

Buffett is not the only notable figure waving the red flag. A survey released last week by the National Association for Business Economics showed that 45 percent of economists are predicting a recession in 2008.

Indeed, economists everywhere are sounding the alarm and asking why the Federal Reserve continues to do little or nothing to counter the rapid downturn as stocks around the world continue to tumble, inflation spirals and the dollar falls to new lows.

“We are becoming increasingly concerned that the authorities in the world do not get it,” said Bernard Connolly, global strategist at Banque AIG. “The extent of de-leveraging involves a wholesale destruction of credit. The risk is that the ‘shadow banking system’ completely collapses,” he said.

“I never thought I would see anything like this in my life,” said James Steele, an HSBC economist in New York.

“The verdict is in. The Fed’s emergency rate cuts in January have failed to halt the downward spiral towards a full-blown debt deflation. Much more drastic action will be needed. As the once unthinkable unfolds, the leaders of global finance dither. For the first time since this Greek tragedy began, I am now really frightened.” writes Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, International Business Editor for the London Telegraph.

Ron Paul Against New Hampshire Recount

Official Statement from Ron Paul On New Hampshire Recount

Ron Paul
Prison Planet
January 13, 2008

Fbiiraqisbein_mn

After a careful investigation, I have decided against seeking a recount in New Hampshire. I am confident that not asking for a recount is the right decision.

I carefully considered the arguments for and against a recount before instructing my campaign staff not to pursue it. Without a firm belief that vote fraud had taken place, and without the possibility that a recount would have increased the chances for success of our campaign, a recount would have diverted campaign resources, time, and energy away from crucial battles elsewhere.

We have taken concerns about vote fraud seriously. In Iowa, campaign volunteers carefully monitored the caucuses. Campaign staff placed Paul supporters in every precinct to watch and verify the voting and count. We had supporters phone in results from their precincts to a campaign hotline while others ensured that those numbers were reflected on the official display board at the Polk County Convention Center. The numbers our caucus watchers reported agreed with the official tally, and both results also aligned with the campaign’s internal polling. In relatively pro-Paul counties, our sampling pegged support at 11.5%. This is consistent with an overall 10% finish for the entire state.

In New Hampshire, while I would have hoped for a better result than eight percent, I am convinced that vote fraud played no role in this result. Rumors of vote fraud were investigated, and in the end they proved to be the result of errors in early media reports that were not reflected in the official numbers. In one notable case, when a campaign staff member contacted an individual who had on the evening of January 8 claimed that his vote had not been counted, the person said that he had made a mistake and that the next morning the error in reporting on a newspaper website had been corrected both in the media and — most importantly — in the official tally.

Many have expressed concerns that those ballots counted by machine yielded a 2% lower total than those counted by hand. However, machine counted vote totals were more than 2% lower for both John McCain and Mike Huckabee. Hand counted votes were more likely to be cast in rural areas. Results almost always vary between urban and rural areas.

My campaign staff and I have analyzed the numbers in New Hampshire and I have reached the conclusion that it was the high turnout — not vote fraud or counting errors — that left us with eight percent of the vote. Our total vote count of over 18,000 votes was well within what we projected given the efforts of our extensive statewide get-out-the-vote program, giving me no reason to believe that vote fraud played any role in the results of the Granite State’s primary.

In both Iowa and New Hampshire there is much to be proud of. Taking both states together, I am honored that over 30,000 people cast their vote for me — more than either Rudy Giuliani or Fred Thompson. Unlike many other candidates’ efforts, our campaign for freedom is growing and our message is spreading.

Now is the time to redouble our efforts. Our resources must be spent on the upcoming primaries and caucuses, and on ensuring that, with your help, we organize every state yet to vote with our Precinct Leaders program.

We can’t win primaries and caucuses that have already happened — but we can win those yet to come. To become the Republican presidential nominee, a candidate must have 1,191 delegates. Iowa, Wyoming and New Hampshire determined only 32 delegates, so we have much opportunity remaining.

Today, I ask you to join me in focusing on the battles ahead as we continue our fight for liberty and our Constitution.

Sincerely,

Ron Paul

Karl Rove Worried About Ron Paul “Momentum”

Karl Rove Worried About Ron Paul “Momentum”
Bush’s brain fears “bandwagon effect” could trump national recognition in early Republican primaries

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
December 20, 2007

Without mentioning his name, Karl Rove made it clear during a recent appearance on Hannity and Colmes that he is worried about people jumping on a bandwagon and supporting a candidate who picks up momentum as a result of the early Republican primaries being bunched together tightly.

Since Rove had already discussed the other Republican candidates in the Fox News piece, he could only have been referring to Congressman Ron Paul.

The man who was dubbed “the architect” and “Bush’s brain” told Hannity he was concerned that the thick and fast style of the early primaries would hinder Americans from making a “more considered judgment,” increasing the likelihood of a “bandwagon effect” overcoming “national reputation.”

Here’s the quote in full.

HANNITY: Do you lean towards one strategy over the other? Or you don’t want to say?
ROVE: I don’t want to say. I —HANNITY: You do, though.
ROVE: But it is interesting to see that everybody has made their strategic bets. I’m not certain, incidentally, that this is helpful for the country, for this to be settled so quickly. I mean, people do need the time — this process ought to be spread out over time, in my opinion, because it allows more people to participate, more people in the country to develop a deeper understanding of who the candidates are, and for the people of America to make a more considered judgment. This thing is happening so quick on so many different battle fronts that I’m not certain, regardless of who makes the — who bet on the right strategy, there is going to be a bandwagon effect, no, national reputation is going to count — no matter which way that works out, I’m not certain it is necessarily in the best interest of the country.

With the media desperate to exalt Mike Huckabee’s campaign as some kind of alternative to the standard Neo-Con fare, it’s clearer than ever that the establishment are trying to run a dead horse against Hillary Clinton to ensure her victory.

As polls have shown, only Congressman Ron Paul could beat Hillary should they go head to head for the presidency, and that’s why people like Rove are scared stiff of the Texan building momentum during the key early primaries.

Ron Paul wins GOP straw poll

Aiken Standard
December 22, 2007

The front-runners for the Republican presidential nomination had to take a back seat in Aiken Thursday to a long-shot candidate with a small but loyal band of supporters.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, a strict constructionist, was the surprise winner of the Aiken County Republican Party presidential straw poll with 30 percent of the vote.

“I don’t necessarily know if our results will hold come Jan. 19 during the state primary, but I do think the poll reflects the opinions of those that are very active in the party,” said Andy O’Bryne, party chairman.

Paul, who up to this point has been treated as a footnote in the GOP race, is known for a loyal base which routinely raises money, buys political signs and even stages campaign events on its own accord in the Texan’s name.

In a recent South Carolina poll conducted by CBS News and released Wednesday, Paul was not even listed in the final results. Typically the congressman receives somewhere between 5 and 7 percent in national polls.

“I think Congressman Paul has energized the libertarian portion of the party,” said O’Bryne. “They are a mature but active group. But I think that some of their issues are not necessarily in line with the consensus of the rest of the party.”

Among the issues that Paul and his supporters have disagreed with the party base on is the ongoing war in Iraq. Paul, who favors isolationism in regard to foreign policy, has repeatedly spoken out against the war and for the return home of U.S. soldiers.

While Paul was the winner of the straw poll, some of the more well-known candidates also placed well. In second was Fred Thompson, a former Tennessee senator, with 28 percent, followed by Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas governor, with 17 percent; Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor, with 11 percent; Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, both with 6 percent; and California Congressman Duncan Hunter, with 3 percent.

The straw poll, which was relegated to one of the smaller rooms in the Aiken County Council complex because of a council meeting, was a standing room only affair as more than 100 people showed up to cast a vote in support of their favorite candidate to succeed President George W. Bush in the White House.

Bush ‘involved’ in CIA leak case

Bush ‘involved’ in CIA leak case

BBC
November 21, 2007

A former White House press secretary has said the US president was involved in misinforming the public over the leaking of a CIA agent’s identity.

In an excerpt from his book, Scott McClellan says George W Bush helped mislead the public over the role in the affair of two White House aides.

The CIA agent, Valerie Plame, says her identity was leaked because her diplomat husband opposed the Iraq war.

The White House said Mr Bush would not ask anyone to pass false information.

Lawsuit

Mr McClellan’s book is not scheduled for publication until April and the excerpt released was brief.

It refers to a White House press conference he attended in 2003.

WHAT IS CIA LEAK CASE ABOUT?

Libby was found guilty of lying to the FBI and a grand jury over revelations about CIA agent Valerie Plame’s identity

Critics said the White House leaked Ms Plame’s identity to undermine her husband, ex-ambassador Joseph Wilson

He had publicly cast doubt on the Bush administration’s case for war in Iraq

The alleged cover-up, rather than the leak itself, was the subject of the Libby trial

At the conference, Mr McClellan told journalists that the two aides Karl Rove and Lewis “Scooter” Libby were “not involved” in leaking Ms Plame’s identity.

The excerpt reads: “There was one problem. It was not true.

“I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice-president, the president’s chief of staff, and the president himself.”

Mr McClellan, who served as press secretary from 2003 to 2006, and his publisher later clarified the excerpt.

Peter Osnos of Public Affairs Books said Mr McClellan was not suggesting Mr Bush deliberately lied.

“He told him something that wasn’t true, but the president didn’t know it wasn’t true,” Mr Osnos said. “The president told him what he thought to be the case.”

Libby, Vice-President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff, is the only person charged over the affair. He was sentenced to 30 months in jail for obstructing an inquiry into the leaking of the identity.

However, Mr Bush intervened in July to prevent Libby from serving a prison term.

Ms Plame said Mr McClellan’s excerpt was “shocking” and that she believed Mr McClellan had been “sent out to lie to the press corps”.

Current White House press secretary Dana Perino said: “The president has not and would not ask his spokespeople to pass on false information.”

In July a judge dismissed a civil lawsuit brought by Ms Plame against Mr Cheney and other Bush administration officials.

She maintained her cover had been blown after her husband, Joseph Wilson, a former ambassador, said the Bush administration had manipulated intelligence on Iraq to back its case for war.

Lieberman Defends his Iran War Amendment from Bloggers

Lieberman: ‘Paranoid, Hyper-Partisan’ ‘Left-Wing Blogs’ Wrote ‘Conspiracy Theories’ On Iran

Think Progress
November 9, 2007

Speaking today at the Johns Hopkins Center for Politics and Foreign Relations, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) accused “left-wing blogs” of making up “conspiracy theories” about the Kyl-Lieberman amendment, which passed the Senate last month. It designated part of the Iranian army a terrorist organization. Lieberman called opponents of the amendment “politically paranoid” and “hyper-partisan.”

He also claimed that the “amendment contained nothing” that could be seen “as a green light” for war:

These were absurd arguments. The text of our amendment contained nothing–nothing–that could be construed as a green light for an attack on Iran. To claim that it did was an act of delusion or deception.

On the contrary, by calling for tougher sanctions on Iran, the intention of our amendment was to offer an alternative to war.

Lieberman’s argument is the only “deception” going on. It didn’t take “conspiracy theories” to realize that the amendment would move America closer to war with Iran. In the original version of the bill, which was only changed after pressure from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), language was included that explicitly endorsed the use of “military instruments” against Iran:

4) to support the prudent and calibrated use of all instruments of United States national power in Iraq, including diplomatic, economic, intelligence, and military instruments, in support of the policy described in paragraph (3) with respect to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies.

Even after the “military instruments” language was removed from the amendment, the final bill still shifted America into a more war-prone posture. As Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) noted at the time, just labeling Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp as “a foreign terrorist organization” could “mandate” the military option against Iran:

It could be read as tantamount to a declaration of war. What do we do with terrorist organizations? If they are involved against us, we attack them.

Given the language of the bill and Lieberman’s previous calls for “aggressive military action” against Iran, progressive blogs were hardly “delusional” in warning against the dangers of the amendment. But Lieberman would rather lash out at straw men caricatures of “left-wing blogs” and “hyper-partisans” than deal with legitimate criticism.

Neo-Con Podhoretz Tells Audience To ‘Shut Up’ After Tough Questions

Giuliani’s foreign policy advisor Implies Iran should be bombed because it carried out 9/11

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
October 23, 2007

Arch-Neo Con Norman Podhoretz’s book reading at a recent Barnes and Noble appearance in New York turned into a hostile affair after he told the audience that Iran should be bombed because “We were attacked by Islamofascists on 9/11,” before being bombarded with accusatory questions and eventually telling the crowd to “shut up”.

Rudy Giuliani’s foreign policy advisor was subject to walkouts by individuals disgusted at the fact that Podhoretz openly called for air strikes on Iran, labeling Podhoretz a “fascist” who would have blood on his hands.

Asked whether there should be a fresh investigation into 9/11, Podhoretz simply dismissed the suggestion as “paranoia” and refused to answer the question.

Watch the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MBzLTjVMhY

He later defended the fact that he signed the infamous Project For a New American Century documents, a Neo-Con manifesto for world domination that includes advocating the use of race-specific bio-weapons, and claimed that the PNAC had been “misrepresented”.Podhoretz then admitted that the CIA had overthrown the U.S.-friendly Iranian government of Mohammad Mossadegh in the 50’s, but called it “ancient history.”

He then went on to make a case that Iran was behind the violence in Iraq and had formed an alliance with Al-Qaeda, despite the fact that the two are Shia and Sunni respectively and as such are arch-enemies. He was then educated about how in fact it was the U.S. government that is funding Al-Qaeda affiliated groups to attack Iran. This mattered little to Podhoretz, who was then asked why we should “fight back” against Iran by bombing them when they had never attacked us?

Podhoretz’s answer was to state that, “We were attacked by Islamofascists on 9/11,” clearly implying that Iran attacked the U.S. on 9/11. Such unmitigated and bellicose propaganda might fly on Fox News, but many members of the audience were having none of it, asking why they should trust Bush and the Neo-Cons after being lied to for six years.

“Why don’t you shut up,” barked Podhoretz, seemingly having abandoned his ceaseless regurgitation of warmongering rhetoric and finally losing his temper.

Several members of the audience were kicked out of the store by cops but as Podhoretz left he was heckled again as protesters chanted “No Iran war,” before ducking into a vehicle and scurrying away.

The incident was another example of the sterling efforts of We Are Change NYC, who have made headlines this year for their prolific confrontations of numerous public figures from Hillary Clinton, to David Rockefeller, to Alan Greenspan.

We Are Change have almost single handedly ruined Rudy Giuliani’s Republican nomination campaign by repeatedly hounding him at public events and reminding that watching media that he is universally hated by New York firefighters and other 9/11 heroes while constantly invoking their names for cheap political points scoring.

Giuliani enlisted Podhoretz as his foreign policy advisor back in July. In September, Podhoretz met secretly with President Bush and Karl Rove and encouraged them to bomb Iran. Podhoretz is widely considered to be one of the few remaining hardcore Neo-Con loyalists, while a sizeable majority of the rest begin to flee the sinking ship as public opinion turns ferociously against the Neo-Con’s anti-American agenda and incessant warmongering.

Top neocon urged Bush to bomb Iran during private White House meeting

Giuliani adviser Podhoretz predicted Bush ‘will hit’ Iran before term is up
One of the few remaining neoconservatives in America was recently granted a private audience in the White House to deliver a 45-minute sales pitch to convince President Bush, accompanied by political deputy Karl Rove, to bomb Iran.

Norman Podhoretz, who is among a dwindling class of agressive defenders of President Bush’s Iraq invasion, argued the United States needed to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities, the author tells The Politico Monday. The longtime editor of Commentary magazine, Podhoretz is now serving as a foreign policy adviser to Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign.

Although Bush “didn’t tip his hand,” Podhoretz says he believes that “Bush is going to hit” Iran before his term ends, The Politico reported.

“”I did say to [the president], that people ask: Why are you spending all this time negotiating sanctions? Time is passing. I said, my friend [Robert] Kagan wrote a column which he said you were giving ‘futility its chance.’ And both he and Karl Rove burst out laughing,” Podhoretz said.

“It struck me,” Podhoretz added, “that if they really believed that there was a chance for these negotiations and sanctions to work, they would not have laughed. They would have got their backs up and said, ‘No, no, it’s not futile, there’s a very good chance.'” ? Podhoretz said his prediction of a US strike is based on instinct, rather than any indication from the president.

His most recent book World War IV: The Long Struggle Against Islamofascism has been praised by conservative talker Rush Limbaugh and defends Bush’s decision to invade Iraq, the Politico reports.

One of the country’s most ardent hawks, Podhoretz was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 when criticism of what some were then beginning to see as a quagmire in Iraq began to intensify.

Podhorets has remained steadfast in arguing in favor of US preemptive war, saying in a recent op-ed that he “hopes” and “prays” for an invasion of Iran.

Podhoretz Granted Secret Access To Lobby Bush On ‘The Case For Bombing Iran’

Think Progress
Seotember 24, 2007

Norman Podhoretz, the “patriarch of neoconservatism,” recently published a book entitled “World War IV: The Long Struggle Against Islamofascism,” staunchly supporting the Iraq war and pushing for war with Iran. In June, Podhoretz published a controversial piece in Commentary magazine titled “The Case for Bombing Iran.

The Politico reports today that President Bush has been listening to Podhoretz’s radical agenda, recently enlisting Podhoretz to discuss his views on Iran. In a meeting that “was not on the president’s public schedule,” Bush and Karl Rove “sat listening to Norman Podhoretz for roughly 45 minutes at the White House”:

Rove was silent throughout, though he took notes. The president listened diligently, Podhoretz said as he recounted the conversation months later, but he “didn’t tip his hand.”

“I did say to [the president], that people ask: Why are you spending all this time negotiating sanctions? Time is passing. I said, my friend [Robert] Kagan wrote a column which he said you were giving ‘futility its chance.’ And both he and Karl Rove burst out laughing.

“It struck me,” Podhoretz added, “that if they really believed that there was a chance for these negotiations and sanctions to work, they would not have laughed. They would have got their backs up and said, ‘No, no, it’s not futile, there’s a very good chance.'”

President Bush has loyally supported Podhoretz’s agenda in the past. In 2004, he bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the nation’s highest civilian honor — on Podhoretz, calling him a “fierce intellectual man” with “fine writing and a “great love for our country.”

Today, Podhoretz’s calls for bombing Iran are being echoed in the administration. According to Newsweek, Vice President Cheney considered a plan to allow Israel to conduct missile strikes against Iran “in an effort to draw a military response from Iran, which could in turn spark a U.S. offensive against targets in the Islamic Republic.”

Podhoretz has argued that “if we were to bomb the Iranians as I hope and pray we will…we’ll unleash a wave of anti-Americanism all over the world that will make the anti-Americanism we’ve experienced so far look like a lovefest.” By enlisting Podhoretz’s advice, President Bush is demonstrating that there isn’t any idea too radical for him to consider.

Neo-Cons Enlist Bin Laden’s Help To Counter 9/11 Truth

Discredited Pentagon-affiliated IntelCenter to release another dubious tape right when Bush needs it most, Osama pops up hours after new Zogby poll shows Americans want new 9/11 investigation for second time running

The U.S. government, via its closely affiliated IntelCenter front, is to release a new tape of Osama Bin Laden on the sixth anniversary of 9/11 in a desperate ploy to counter 9/11 truth and a new Zogby poll that again proves the majority of Americans are highly suspect of the official story.

A pre-released image shows an apparently older looking Bin Laden with a dyed dark brown beard, meaning the individual in the tape is either a body double or the terror master has been using Grecian Formula 16 in between his dashing from cave to cave across the mountainous Pakistani border region.

But whether you think it’s Bin Laden or not is really beside the point, if Bin Laden was dead it would be necessary to perpetuate the myth anyway, the thing to bear in mind here is that Osama has never failed in ensuring his tapes get released at the most politically opportune times – not for ‘Al-Qaeda’ – but for the Neo-Cons and the Bush administration.

In addition, the security services and IntelCenter have been caught on numerous occasions doctoring Bin Laden tapes and passing off footage they filmed as originating from Al-Qaeda, as well as claiming that 6-year-old footage is new material. Their credibility on this issue has been shot to pieces again and again and only the supremely naive or the witting dupe would lend any credence to the authenticity of this new tape.

First and foremost, in the same vein as the History Channel hit piece, the tape is an attempt to rescue the tattered and torn credibility of the official 9/11 fairy tale, as well as providing a media distraction to obfuscate the 9/11 truth events that kick off today at ground zero and continue on into next week’s anniversary.

A new Zogby International poll released yesterday shows that 51% of Americans (up from 45% last year) want Bush and Cheney to be directly investigated for their actions on 9/11 and 67% fault the 9/11 Commission for their failure to probe the anomalous collapse of WTC 7.

Hours after the release of the poll Bin Laden pops up and promises us a new editorial comment. Coincidence? Precisely the same thing happened last year. On May 23rd 2006, a Zogby poll was released showing nearly half of Americans wanted a new 9/11 investigation. The very next day, Bin Laden popped up to reinforce the official version and threaten new attacks. Can lightening strike twice in the same place?

The Osama tapes are about as genuine as a used car salesman convention, and have been proven fraudulent on countless occasions. They are nothing more than crude propaganda unleashed in a desperate move to put the genie of what really happened on 9/11 back in the bottle.

For those who still scoff at the notion that the Neo-Cons would be behind the release of the tapes, consider the fact that the Pentagon admitted that they undertook a “propaganda campaign to magnify the role of the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq,” Musab Al-Zarqawi, which was targeted at the “U.S. home audience” and that the discovery of the program was followed by the release of a video tape featuring….you guessed it – Musab Al-Zarqawi.

The Washington Post even described how the Pentagon had concocted fake Al-Zarqawi letters boasting about suicide attacks and leaked them to Dexter Filkins of the New York Times, who splashed them on the front page the next day.

If the Pentagon had no qualms about faking communications from other Al-Qaeda leaders and passing them off as real to the U.S. media, then why would they refrain from doing the same with the Bin Laden tapes?

In our previous groundbreaking investigation, we exposed IntelCenter, the middleman between “Al-Qaeda’s media arm” and the press, and the organization that routinely obtains the tapes, as little more than a Pentagon front group staffed by individuals with close connections to Donald Rumsfeld and the U.S. war machine.

Computer analyst Neal Krawetz discovered last month that the As-Sahab logo (the alleged media arm of Al-Qaeda) and the IntelCenter logo (a U.S. based private intelligence organization that “monitors terrorist activity”) were both added to the Al-Qaeda videos at the same time. Though Krawetz re-affirmed his conclusion in an interview with Wired News, after the fact became public, he mysteriously recanted.

Krawetz original analysis, before he was obviously pressured to withdraw it, clearly suggests that IntelCenter is directly manufacturing the tapes and that “As-Sahab” is a contrived hoax to promulgate the myth that the tapes are coming from Al-Qaeda.

IntelCenter’s denial of of this whole episode should be taken with a pinch of salt, for it was Ben Venzke’s company that knowingly re-released 6 years old footage of Bin Laden that many quarters of the media treated as new. IntelCenter itself had released the same footage in October 2003 and it still appears dated as such on their own website.

The organization was also behind the so-called “laughing hijackers” tape, which was passed off as originating from Al-Qaeda’s media arm, but was later exposed as being secret surveillance footage filmed by U.S. intelligence in 2000.

At upwards of $4,000 dollars a year in intelligence packages that are sold on their website, IntelCenter has a lucrative financial motive to keep the supply of Al-Qaeda tapes rolling.

For the Bush administration and the Neo-Cons, the tapes are routinely delivered on a silver platter at the most politically expedient moments, and a fresh injection on behalf of Bin Laden for the flagging war on terror on the 6th anniversary of 9/11 is precisely what Bush needs to help keep U.S. troops in Iraq until the next election, as Bush is quoted as holding out for in his own recent biography.

The last Bin Laden tape, despite later being proven as re-hashed footage originally filmed in 2001 that was actually released on two separate occasions before, emerged right at the time when the 6 months “wait and see” period after the surge was up and was used to mandate the endless occupation of Iraq.

Whether it’s to justify a war, win an election or divert from a scandal, Bin Laden can always be relied upon to come up with the goods and save Bush’s bacon.

Both Kerry and Bush attributed the President’s 2004 re-election to Osama Bin Laden’s appearance in a video tape just days before the vote. Veteran newsman Walter Cronkite mused that the whole farce was a Karl Rove orchestrated set-up.

On the eve of the Iraq war during Colin Powell’s infamous presentation to the UN, an audio tape in which bin Laden claimed he was allied with Saddam Hussein surfaced, a gift-wrapped present for the Neo-Cons who had consistently been proven wrong in their assertion that there was a connection between Iraq and 9/11.

Ayman Al-Zawahiri appeared right on cue at the exact same time two years running, days before the State of the Union, to slam Bush as a “butcher” and a “failure.” Like his right-hand man Osama, Al-Zawahiri’s timing is impeccable! Right when Bush needs to reinforce the fear of the shadowy enemy each January to mute his critics before the big speech, Al-Zawahiri pops up with the goods.

Though such transparent and debase propaganda is still more than enough to fool the remnants of the semi-retarded, kool-aid drinking, Neo-Con cheerleaders out there, many Americans with more than three brain cells to rub together are starting to realize that they have been led on one almighty goose chase, and that no amount of fuzzy “Bin Laden tapes” are going to hold back the stampede of truth that at this time concentrates at ground zero – namely the protest actions and events taking place at ground zero over the next five days in the name of 9/11 truth.

Groups: Bin Laden to address Americans on 9/11 anniversary

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Terror mastermind Osama bin Laden plans a new video addressing the American people regarding the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, terror monitoring groups said Thursday.

SITE Intelligence Group said an Internet announcement of the plan included a photo of the al-Qaeda leader from the upcoming video — his beard, which in previous messages had been streaked with gray, was entirely dark.

The Intelcenter, which also monitors Islamic Web sites, said the video is expected within the next 72 hours, before the sixth anniversary of the World Trade Center attack.

The last bin Laden video was in October 2004, shortly before the U.S. presidential elections.
