Brzezinski Suggests U.S. Shoot Down Israeli Jets To Prevent Iran War

Brzezinski Suggests U.S. Shoot Down Israeli Jets To Prevent Iran War

The Cutting Edge
September 28, 2009

In a recent interview with the Daily Beast last week, Zbigniew Brzezinski, the National Security Adviser from the Carter administration and adviser to President Barack Obama, made a highly contentious statement regarding the U.S.-Israeli alliance. When asked how the U.S.would respond to Israeli jets using Iraqi airspace in order to stage an attack on Iran, Brzezinski was quoted as saying: “We are not exactly impotent little babies. They have to fly over our airspace in Iraq. Are we just going to sit there and watch? … We have to be serious about denying them that right. That means a denial where you aren’t just saying it. If they fly over, you go up and confront them. They have the choice of turning back or not. No one wishes for this but it could be a Liberty in reverse.”

“A liberty in reverse” is a reference to the controversial encounter between Israeli jets and the American vessel U.S.S. Liberty in 1967that resulted in the sinking of the U.S. Navy ship.

Brzezinski who is said to have a reputation for such rhetoric, found his calls for “a Liberty in reverse” dimly viewed by many in Jewish leadership.

For example, Anti-Defamation League national director Abraham H Foxman, responded to Brzezinski’s quip with this: “Here is an international legal expert and he doesn’t even know that the US does not control sovereignty over Iraqi airspace. Putting that aside, Zbigniew Brzezinski has always had a nasty streak when it came to Israel…. it is better that we can now see it, and it is out in the open.”

The Obama administration quickly distanced itself from any association with Brzezinski quite some time ago. Former Ambassador Dennis Ross, senior adviser on Middle East affairs to the Barack Obama campaign, told New Jersey Jewish News in October of 2008,“Brzezinski is not an adviser to the campaign… there is a lot of disinformation that is being pushed, but he is not an adviser to the campaign. Brzezinski came out and supported Obama early because of thewar in Iraq. A year or so ago they talked a couple of times. That’s the extent of it, and Sen. Obama has made it clear that on other Middle Eastern issues, Brzezinski is not who he looks to. They don’t have the same views.”

Saudis Offer Israel Airspace To Bomb Iran Nuclear Sites

Saudis Offer Israel Airspace To Bomb Iran Nuclear Sites

Press TV
September 28, 2009

Israeli fighter jets have been allowed to use Saudi airspace to launch go-it-alone air strikes on Iranian nuclear installations, says a recent report.

The issue has been discussed in a closed-door meeting in London, where British Intelligence Chief Sir John Scarlett, his Israeli counterpart, Meir Dagan, and Saudi official have been present, Daily Express reported.

According to the report, Scarlett has been told that Saudi airspace would be at Israel’s disposal should Tel Aviv decide to move forward with his military plans against Iran.

The British daily added the likelihood of an Israeli attack against Iran has increased significantly after the country announced plans to launch its second enrichment facility in the central city of Qom.

Press TV contacted the Saudi Embassy in Tehran for information on the report. The embassy, however, was reluctant to elaborate.

In line with its policy of nuclear transparency, Iran announced the construction of a second enrichment plant in a letter to the UN nuclear watchdog on September 21. The new plant is due to produce enriched uranium up to 5 percent.

The letter was sent 12 months before the agency’s regulations oblige its member states to inform the body of new developments.

With eyes firmly fixed on Iran’s nuclear progressions, the right-wing government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly threatened to bomb the country’s enrichment facilities out of existence.

Tel Aviv accuses Tehran of nuclear weapons development – a charge rejected by both Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog, which has so far made “21 unannounced inspections” of the country’s nuclear facilities.

The UN nuclear watchdog in its previous reports has confirmed that Iran only enriches uranium-235 to a level of “less than 5 percent.”

Uranium, which fuels a nuclear power plant, can be used for military purposes only if enriched to high levels of above 90 percent.

Details of the controversial Israeli plans to attack Iran emerged after John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations, recently told a group of intelligence analysts that “Riyadh certainly approves” of Israel’s use of Saudi airspace in the event of war with Iran.

Bolton, had previously said he had discussed the possibility with Saudi officials in closed-door meetings. “None of them would say anything about it publicly but they would certainly acquiesce in an overflight if the Israelis didn’t trumpet it as a big success.”

The recent revelations follow a flurry of media reports in July, which suggested the Saudi government had approved the use of its airspace for an attack.

While Saudi officials deny having diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv, an Israeli defense source has confirmed that the Mossad spy agency maintained “working relations” with the kingdom.

According to a study published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a military exchange between Iran and Israel could result in the death of as many as 6 million people.

U.S. Military Kidnaps Honduran President

Chavez Says The U.S. Toppled The Honduran President, Taking Him To A U.S. Air Base

Hugo Chavez

aangrifan
August 20, 2009

It looks like it was the CIA that toppled Manuel Zelaya, the president of Honduras, on 28 June 2009.

Diana Barahona, at Global Research, 18 August 2009, tells us that Zelaya was taken to a U.S. air base during the kidnapping.

Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has revealed that Honduran President Manuel Zelaya told him that the military who kidnapped him transferred him by plane to a U.S. military base, in Honduran territory.

According to Chavez: “They put Zelaya in the plane and landed at Palmerola with the president a prisoner and the Yankee officials appeared and knew that the president was there, they had a discussion with the Honduran officials.

“Then the Yankee military took the decision there to send him to Costa Rica.

“That is a very serious matter, the the president of Honduras was in a Yankee military base…

“The Yankees overthrew Zelaya…

“From the Yankee base, which is at a place called Palmerola, they carried out all of the operations and the dirty war and the terrorism against Sandinista Nicaragua, against El Salvador.

“It wasn’t long ago that the Yankees turned Honduras into a platform to attack its neighbors.”

“What we are asking is that he (Obama) withdraw the Palmerola base, that he withdraw the Guantanamo base where they torture…”

Chavez also said that Venezuela rejects Obama’s policy of setting up U.S. military bases in Colombia.

Honduras: Military Coup Engineered By Two US Companies?

John Perkins
Information Clearing House

I recently visited Central America. Everyone I talked with there was convinced that the military coup that had overthrown the democratically-elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, had been engineered by two US companies, with CIA support. And that the US and its new president were not standing up for democracy.

Earlier in the year Chiquita Brands International Inc. (formerly United Fruit) and Dole Food Co had severely criticized Zelaya for advocating an increase of 60% in Honduras’s minimum wage, claiming that the policy would cut into corporate profits. They were joined by a coalition of textile manufacturers and exporters, companies that rely on cheap labor to work in their sweatshops.

Democracy Now! covers the Honduran coup.

Memories are short in the US, but not in Central America. I kept hearing people who claimed that it was a matter of record that Chiquita (United Fruit) and the CIA had toppled Guatemala’s democratically-elected president Jacobo Arbenz in 1954 and that International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT), Henry Kissinger, and the CIA had brought down Chile’s Salvador Allende in 1973. These people were certain that Haiti’s president Jean-Bertrand Aristide had been ousted by the CIA in 2004 because he proposed a minimum wage increase, like Zelaya’s.

I was told by a Panamanian bank vice president, “Every multinational knows that if Honduras raises its hourly rate, the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean will have to follow. Haiti and Honduras have always set the bottom line for minimum wages. The big companies are determined to stop what they call a ‘leftist revolt’ in this hemisphere. In throwing out Zelaya they are sending frightening messages to all the other presidents who are trying to raise the living standards of their people.”

It did not take much imagination to envision the turmoil sweeping through every Latin American capital. There had been a collective sign of relief at Barack Obama’s election in the U.S., a sense of hope that the empire in the North would finally exhibit compassion toward its southern neighbors, that the unfair trade agreements, privatizations, draconian IMF Structural Adjustment Programs, and threats of military intervention would slow down and perhaps even fade away. Now, that optimism was turning sour.

The cozy relationship between Honduras’s military coup leaders and the corporatocracy were confirmed a couple of days after my arrival in Panama. England’s The Guardian ran an article announcing that “two of the Honduran coup government’s top advisers have close ties to the US secretary of state. One is Lanny Davis, an influential lobbyist who was a personal lawyer for President Bill Clinton and also campaigned for Hillary. . . The other hired gun for the coup government that has deep Clinton ties is (lobbyist) Bennett Ratcliff.” (1)

DemocracyNow! broke the news that Chiquita was represented by a powerful Washington law firm, Covington & Burling LLP, and its consultant, McLarty Associates (2). President Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder had been a Covington partner and a defender of Chiquita when the company was accused of hiring “assassination squads” in Colombia (Chiquita was found guilty, admitting that it had paid organizations listed by the US government as terrorist groups “for protection” and agreeing in 2004 to a $25 million fine). (3) George W. Bush’s UN Ambassador, John Bolton, a former Covington lawyer, had fiercely opposed Latin American leaders who fought for their peoples’ rights to larger shares of the profits derived from their resources; after leaving the government in 2006, Bolton became involved with the Project for the New American Century, the Council for National Policy, and a number of other programs that promote corporate hegemony in Honduras and elsewhere.

McLarty Vice Chairman John Negroponte was U.S. Ambassador to Honduras from 1981-1985, former Deputy Secretary of State, Director of National Intelligence, and U.S. Representative to the United Nations; he played a major role in the U.S.-backed Contra’s secret war against Nicaragua’s Sandinista government and has consistently opposed the policies of the democratically-elected pro-reform Latin American presidents. (4) These three men symbolize the insidious power of the corporatocracy, its bipartisan composition, and the fact that the Obama Administration has been sucked in.

The Los Angeles Times went to the heart of this matter when it concluded:

What happened in Honduras is a classic Latin American coup in another sense: Gen. Romeo Vasquez, who led it, is an alumnus of the United States’ School of the Americas (renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). The school is best known for producing Latin American officers who have committed major human rights abuses, including military coups. (5)

All of this leads us once again to the inevitable conclusion: you and I must change the system. The president – whether Democrat or Republican – needs us to speak out.

Chiquita, Dole and all your representatives need to hear from you. Zelaya must be reinstated.

Iran Finds US-Backed Terrorists in Riots

Iran Finds US-Backed Terrorists in Riots

Noworldsystem.com
June 24, 2009

While total mayhem on the streets of Iran intensifies, behind the scenes lurks the Anglo-American New World Order meddling in the country’s election process, creating a ripe environment for regime change against the Islamic Republic. If the color revolution is successful it will create a dictatorial Shah monarchy much like in 1941.

The coup against Iran consists of many operations inside and outside the country; U.S. and British funded Mousavi’s revolution, terrorists were used in the riots in Tehran and the mainstream media is shelling out propaganda against Ahmadinejad.

The latest news of US-backed terrorism in Iran came from Iranian Security Official claiming terrorist Mujahedin Khaliq Organization (MKO) played a major role in the recent riots in Tehran after the elections were declared a fraud. Officials reported that they have identified and arrested a large number of MKO members, arrested members admitted they were extensively trained in Iraq (Camp Ashraf) to create post-election mayhem. They also admitted that they were given directions by the MKO command-post in Britain. [Source]

The proof of U.S. and British operations in Iran is extensive, in 2007 Bush approved to fund a covert coup in Iran according to current and former military, intelligence and from presidential findings signed by the president. The operations gave $400 million to the CIA to spend on terrorist organizations such as MKO and Jundullah terrorists to help prop up a color revolution. [Source]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jUfnE-Dclc

More proof of state sponsored terrorism: In 2008, Former Pakistan General Mirza Aslam Beig reported that the U.S. was providing training facilities to the Jundullah terrorists located in eastern areas of Iran to create unrest in the area and effect the cordial ties between Iran and its neighbor Pakistan. [Source]

May 27, 2007, the London Telegraph admitted “Mr. Bush has signed the official document endorsing the CIA plans for a propaganda and disinformation campaign intended to destabilize, and eventually topple, the theocratic rule of the mullahs”. A few days previously the Telegraph reported Bush administration neocon, John Bolton told the Telegraph that a US military strike on Iran would “be a ‘last option’ after economic sanctions and attempts to foment a popular revolution had failed”.

Globalist puppet-master Henry Kissinger had the same sentiments calling for a military invasion of Iran if the “color revolution” fails to overthrow the current Iranian administration.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkQ1iNHEGW8

Another Neocon, Kenneth Timmerman writes that “the National Endowment for Democracy has spent millions of dollars promoting ‘color’ revolutions . . . Some of that money appears to have made it into the hands of pro-Mousavi groups, who have ties to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) outside Iran that the National Endowment for Democracy funds.” Timmerman’s own neocon Foundation for Democracy is “a private, non-profit organization established in 1995 with grants from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), to promote democracy and internationally-recognized standards of human rights in Iran.” [Source]

This election chaos in Iran will definitely be used by the Obama administration as the Democrat’s version of the War on Terror against the Mullahs. There are many signs that this administration will be the straw that breaks the camels back for regime change. In the 1970s Obama’s foreign policy adviser Zbigneiw Brzezinski flew to Pakistan to foment Iranian resistance by supporting the Afghan Mujahideen Jihadists. He wanted to arm and fund the Mujahideen without revealing the United States role.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaiJtLrEwVU

The 2009 Iranian election mayhem started by the corporate-controlled media reporting that candidate Mousavi was the winner before the elections ended. This created mass confusion, once the election ended Ahmadinejad was declared the winner, immediately after, Mousavi denounced the election as rigged causing all hell to break loose in the streets of Tehran.

The mainstream media has its dirty fingerprints all over the plot to help overthrow Iran, they are extremely biased towards Mousavi. Example; the BBC News website used a photo of Ahmadinejad waving to his supporters, the BBC cropped-out Ahmadinejad and used the crowd claiming that the photo was of anti-government protesters in favor of Mousavi. [Source] Not to say the Mousavi supporters are not genuine, but looking at the evidence it proves the U.S. and the British are helping the “color revolution” and using this opportunity to take out the Mullahs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehpPPPiqMc4

Mousavi’s green revolution against the Mullahs could be at its end because of his past leadership mistakes when Prime Minister of Iran in the 1980’s. During his leadership he personally selected a terrorist named Ali Akbar Mohtashemi-pur as the ambassador of Iran in Beirut. The new ambassador was caught by the NSA discussing plans to carry out terrorism. [Source]

The man that is now standing in line to take Mousavi’s place is none other than the son of the late Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, who is emerging as a prominent figure of the color revolution. Pahlavi long planned to help overthrow the Mullahs, five years ago he called for a “revolution sparked by massive civil disobedience in which the masses in the streets are backed by elements of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard,” adding that he was in contact with members of the Guard who shared his vision. Pahlavi left Iran in 1978 and was educated in the United States before training as a jet fighter pilot at the Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas.

According to writer Michael Edwards, Pahlavi “has continually appeared on satellite radio and TV shows beamed into Iran, repeatedly calling for civil disobedience in order to topple the Islamic Mullahs. He promotes a US-UN backed referendum to decide whether Iran is to be governed as a constitutional monarchy, which he says he can lead as Shah, or a secular democracy.” [Source]

History of the Shah Dictatorship in Iran

To understand what it means to have another Shah of Iran you must look back at the history of Iran and how the United States and Great Britain meddled in the past to install a dictatorial monarchy.:

Since Britain was the first to discover oil fields in Iran in 1908, the Anglo-American Empire had its meddling paws in every aspect of Iranian life. Upon discovery Britain decided to create The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) in the country, it was run only for the benefit of the British. In 1954 he Anglo-Iranian Oil Company changed its name to British Petroleum (BP).

In 1941 the British/American empire installed the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. By 1944 the Iranian people started to realize the Shah was nothing more than a puppet of the British/American empire and started mass riots, the Shah ordered Martial Law and arresting party leaders and clerics that oppose the regime.

But in 1951 the Iranian Revolution was finally heard when Iranian nationalist Mohammed Mossadeq was elected Prime Minister. Mossadeq at this time nationalized AIOC to make sure Iranians were the only ones to benefit from the oil fields and not the British. To the Anglo-American New World Order, this was a big mistake. In 1953 the newly created CIA and MI6 launched Operation AJAX, a plan to overthrow Iran by using terror attacks to subsequently blame them on Mohammed Mossadeq. This plan was later revealed in the late 1990’s when the CIA declassified large sections of Operation AJAX to the American public.:

“TPAJAX. The plan comprised propaganda, provocations, demonstrations, and bribery, and employed agents of influence, “false flag” operatives, dissident military leaders, and paid protesters.” [Source]

August 1953, with the help of the British and the U.S., Mossadeq was removed and the Shah returned back to his throne for the next 25 years, at this time American/British oil companies took over half of Iran’s oil production. The velvet glove came off the Shah’s iron fist after the coup against Mossadeq, all who opposed the dictatorship had to deal with the imperial secret police called the SAVAK that was just as brutal then the secret police of Nazi Germany. The Shah ordered deaths of demonstrators, torture and execution of all who oppose the Shah empire. In 1965 the Shahs main opposition Ayatollah Khomeini was deported to Iraq for 13 years for saying the Shah has sold their independence to the British/American empire.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONhHX1NWjbo

The Shah was eventually destabilized and in 1979 Khomeini returned to Iran administering the Islamic Republic of Iran.

As years passed, Ahmadinejad was elected in 2005 and now today the discontent grows against Iran, the New World Order power elite want to control Iran once again to make sure the region approves of the plan for World Government and a better control the region.

U.S. stalls Israeli military strike on Iran

U.S. stalls Israeli military strike on Iran

Haaretz
August 8, 2008

The American administration has rejected an Israeli request for military equipment and support that would improve Israel’s ability to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.

A report published last week by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) states that military strikes are unlikely to destroy >Iran’s centrifuge program for enriching uranium.

The Americans viewed the request, which was transmitted (and rejected) at the highest level, as a sign that Israel is in the advanced stages of preparations to attack Iran. They therefore warned Israel against attacking, saying such a strike would undermine American interests. They also demanded that Israel give them prior notice if it nevertheless decided to strike Iran.

As compensation for the requests it rejected, Washington offered to improve Israel’s defenses against surface-to-surface missiles.

Israel responded by saying it reserves the right to take whatever action it deems necessary if diplomatic efforts to halt Iran’s nuclearization fail.

Senior Israeli officials had originally hoped that U.S. President George Bush would order an American strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities before leaving office, as America’s military is far better equipped to conduct such a strike successfully than is Israel’s.

Jerusalem also fears that an Israeli strike, even if it succeeded well enough to delay Iran’s nuclear development for a few years, would give Iran international legitimacy for its program, which it currently lacks. Israel, in contrast, would be portrayed as an aggressor, and would be forced to contend alone with Iran’s retaliation, which would probably include thousands of missile strikes by Iranian allies Hezbollah, Hamas and perhaps even Syria.

Rice: Israel Can Attack Iran if It Wants

The Jerusalem Post
August 10, 2008

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended Israel’s right to make its own decision about whether it takes military action against Iran, in an interview released over the weekend.

“We don’t say yes or no to Israeli military operations. Israel is a sovereign country,” she said in response to a question from The Politico Web site as to whether she was concerned that America would be blamed in the case of an IDF attack on the Islamic Republic.

Her statements come amid speculation that Washington has warned Jerusalem not to attack Iran and media reports that the US told Israel it doesn’t have the green light to use Iraqi airspace for any such attack.

US: No plan for naval blockade of Iran

Press TV
August 13, 2008

A senior official with the US Defense Department has dismissed reports that Washington is planning a naval blockade of Iran.

“As a matter of policy we do not discuss current or future ship’s movements. However, I can tell you that reports of an alleged naval blockade of Iran are false,” Lt. Col. Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for the assistant secretary of defense for public affairs told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday.

“We routinely rotate deployed naval forces in the USCENTCOM area of responsibility,” he added.

The US Central Command supervises US military operations in the Middle East, East Africa and Central Asia.

On Monday, Egypt’s Middle East Times reported that a massive US and European armada was heading towards the Persian Gulf for a naval blockade of Iran.

The report said that the force included the nuclear-powered American aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt as well as forces from the British Royal Navy and a French nuclear submarine.

U.S. ’diplomatic’ talks in Iran to legitimize attack

U.S. ’diplomatic’ talks in Iran to legitimize attack

Jerusalem Post
July 27, 2008

Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen (L) salutes Israeli Chief of Defense Forces, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi who recently warned that all options must be prepared against Iran.

Recent talks the United States held with Iran are aimed at creating legitimacy for a potential attack against Iranian nuclear facilities, defense officials speculated on Sunday as Defense Minister Ehud Barak headed to Washington for talks with senior administration officials.

Barak will travel to Washington and New York and will hold talks with his counterpart Robert Gates, Vice President Dick Cheney, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Michael Mullen, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.

Officials said it was likely that President George W. Bush would join the meeting between Barak and Hadley. On Wednesday, Barak will fly to New York for a brief meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon.

Barak’s departure to the US came as IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi returned to Israel on Sunday from a week-long visit to the US as Mullen’s guest. Ashkenazi held talks with Cheney, Hadley and other senior officials with a focus on the Iranian nuclear program.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak (L) on Tuesday said; “A policy that consists of keeping all options on the table must be maintained” shakes hands with Barack Obama who also states would take “no options off the table”.

“There is a lot of strategic thinking concerning Iran going on right now but no one has yet to make a decision what to do,” said a top IDF officer, involved in the dialogue between Israel and the US. “We are still far away from the point where military officers are poring over maps together planning an operation.”

In recent weeks, Mullen has said publicly that he is opposed to military action against Iran which would open a “third front” for the US military which is currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Barak’s talks in the US come a little over a week after the Bush administration sent its number three diplomat to Geneva to participate in European Union talks with Iran over its nuclear program.

The move led to reports that the US was changing its isolation tactic vis-à-vis Iran but Israeli defense officials speculated Sunday that the move was really a ploy to buy international support in the event that Bush decides to attack Iran in his last months in office.

“This way they will be able to say they tried everything,” one official speculated. “This increases America’s chances of gaining more public support domestically as well as the support of European nations which are today opposed to military action.”

Diplomatic officials have speculated that the Iran-US talks were also connected to the presidential elections.

According to the IDF officer, the frequent meetings between Israel and the US in recent weeks – Mullen was in Israel in June – is a sign of the strong ties between the two countries as well as the mutual interest both take in different regional issues such as Iran, Hizbullah, Hamas and Syria.

Bolton: U.S. should help Israel hit Iran

Jewish Ledger
July 25, 2008

Former U.N. ambassador John Bolton said the United States should assist Israel in any strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The ex-U.S. envoy in an op-ed in the July 15 Wall Street Journal said the United States must consider what assistance to extend to Israel before and after an airstrike.

“We will be blamed for the strike anyway, and certainly feel whatever negative consequences result, so there is compelling logic to make it as successful as possible,” wrote Bolton, who was known for his hawkish foreign policy views.

“At a minimum, we should place no obstacles in Israel’s path, and facilitate its efforts where we can.” Bolton said the efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions through sanctions had failed, and even if they could still be enacted, the time for their effectiveness has passed.

Students Offer $5,000 For Rice’s Arrest

Students Offer $5,000 For Rice’s Arrest

Scoop
July 24, 2008

Auckland students seek the arrest of a high-level United States official visiting Auckland this weekend. New Zealand’s largest students’ association has offered any Auckland University student a $5000 reward if they are able to make a successful citizen’s arrest of United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her visit to Auckland over the weekend, for her role in overseeing the illegal invasion and continued occupation of Iraq.

“It is hard enough living as a student in Auckland these days without having a war criminal coming to town, so we thought we’d give our students a chance to make a dent in their student loans and work for global justice at the same time”, says AUSA President David Do.

The invasion and occupation of Iraq was overseen by Condoleeza Rice and other US officials in her role as National Security Advisor and later Secretary of State (equivalent to Minister of Foreign Affairs).

“Generally when US officials visit overseas they are heavily shielded from the general public, and unfortunately its not hard to see why,” adds David Do.

“Rice is the public spokesperson for an illegal and immoral occupation that has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the continued oppression of the people of Iraq. We believe Rice should be arrested and detained in accordance with the law and tried fairly at the International Criminal Court for her role in these war crimes,” said AUSA International Affairs Officer Omar Hamed, who moved the motion for the reward at Monday’s AUSA Executive meeting.

Citizen’s arrests of high ranking government officials have been attempted recently:

-John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations, escaped an attempted citizen’s arrest by author and activist George Monbiot at the British Hay Arts Festival in late May 2008.

-Peace activist Peter McGregor attempted a citizen’s arrest of Australia’s then Attorney-General Philip Ruddock as a war criminal at the University of New South Wales in July 2007

-Campaigner Peter Tatchell has twice attempted to make a citizen’s arrest on Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe.

Conyers: These Are Not Impeachment Hearings

George Washington’s Blog
July 23, 2008

John Conyers is now taking the position that no one at Friday’s impeachment hearing can accuse Bush or Cheney of any crime, or any impeachable offense, or dishonorable conduct, or even lying.

Moreover, Conyers is now saying that he will shut the hearing down if anyone does accuse the boys of crimes, impeachable offenses, or otherwise being naughty.

As David Swanson summarizes it:

“Apparently the rules of Congress are designed to allow impeachable offenses to be discussed only in impeachment hearings. Apparently this didn’t occur to Chairman Conyers when he decided to hold a non-impeachment impeachment hearing. As a result, his hearing may be quickly shut down, and he will have a choice of holding a real impeachment hearing, resigning, or dropping the pretense that he intends to resist Cheney and Bush in any way whatsoever.”

Pat Robertson: Israel Should Strike Iran Before 2008 Election

Pat Robertson: Israel Should Strike Iran Before 2008 Election

Think Progress
July 23, 2008

On yesterday’s edition of The 700 Club, Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson sharply criticized the “moderate tone” the Bush administration has allegedly taken toward Iran and its nuclear weapons program. Robertson advocated that Israel look out for the “survival of its nation” and “make some kind of a strike” against Iranian nuclear facilities. He also predicted that it will likely happen before the 2008 elections:

But nevertheless, I think we can look in the next few months for Israel to make a strike — possibly before the next election — because I think George Bush — to use the term an “amber light” — he’s given the amber, the yellow light, saying, “Caution, but go ahead.”

Robertson’s predictions often turn out to be wrong. In 2004, Robertson claimed that the Lord told him it would “be like a blowout” re-election for President Bush. (Bush ended up receiving just 51 percent of the vote.) In 2006, he incorrectly predicted that “the outcome of the war and the success of the economy will leave the Republicans in charge.”

He does, however, have an inside track into the Bush administration. Last year, Robertson’s Regent University estimated that one in six of its graduates were employed in government work. Approximately 150 served in the Bush administration.

Today, top McCain surrogate Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) is also talking to controversial Pastor John Hagee’s organization. In 2006, Hagee declared:

The United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West… a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ.

Other members of the right wing have also been unifying around the idea of striking Iran before Bush leaves. Both John Bolton and Bill Kristol have made the same argument.

Kagan: ‘The only way’ to ‘force’ Iran to halt its nuclear program is an ‘attack.’

Think Progress
July 23, 2008

Appearing on MSNBC this afternoon, Iraq surge architect Fred Kagan criticized direct talks with Iran and made his case for attacking Iran, claiming it is the only means to “force” the country to halt its nuclear program:

Well, there’s nothing we can do short of an attack to force Iran to give up its nuclear program. … At the end of the day, the only way that you can make for sure that [a nuclear arm’s race] doesn’t happen is with an attack. There are a variety of things you can do short of an attack and hope that they will work, but hope is not a method here.

Top Israeli official: If nuclear talks fail, Bush will order Iran attack between November and January

DEBKAfile
July 19, 2008

This assessment was reported by Israeli national radio Saturday overnight quoting a high-placed “security-political” official.

The source predicted that President George W. Bush would order Iran attacked between the November 4 presidential election and his exit from the White House in January. The quote was aired shortly after the six-power talks with Iran in Geneva – with US official participation for the first time – failed, and just before Israel chief of staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi set out for Washington. He is to spend a week there as guest of Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

DEBKAfile’s political sources describe the disclosure as a step aimed at slowing down the collapse of Israel’s stated policy of relying on international diplomatic pressure to thwart Iran’s acquisition of nuclear arms. It is expected to raise a furious outcry from the powers spearheading the diplomatic effort and prompt extreme reactions from Tehran.

Mofaz: No choice but to attack Iran

Shaul Mofaz: No choice but to attack Iran

Press TV
July 18, 2008

Israeli transportation minister Shaul Mofaz has reiterated his previous threats against Iran, saying Israel must be ready to act.

In an interview with The Jerusalem Post published late Thursday, Mofaz said sanctions were not effective in halting Iran’s nuclear program and “there will be no choice but to attack Iran to halt the Iranian nuclear program.”

“Israel cannot let Iran get to the point of nuclearization,” Mofaz said. “All options are on the table. If there won’t be a choice other than a nuclear Iran or a military option, it’s clear what our decision has to be.”

“The strategy against Iran has not changed and it will continue to be led by the United States,” Mofaz said, adding Israel could not let Iran ’threaten the entire world.’

Mofaz had told Yediot Aharonot on June 6 that Israel would attack Iran if it did not cease nuclear development.

Following his remarks in June, Israeli officials condemned his threats, calling them ’irresponsible’ and ’cynical.’

His new remarks against Tehran come as even the United States seems to have backed down on its demand that Iran suspend uranium enrichment before entering talks on its nuclear program.

US diplomat William Burns is to be present at the negotiating table on Saturday in Geneva where Iran’s nuclear issue will be discussed.

John Bolton demands US support for Israeli strike on Iran

Telegraph
July 15, 2008

John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations, has said that America should “facilitate” an Israeli attack on suspected nuclear facilities in Iran.

In a Wall Street Journal editorial, the leading voice of Washington’s hawks warned that time is running out for efforts to stop the Islamic Republic’s covert nuclear research programme.

Recent tests of ballistic missiles capable of hitting Tel Aviv had demonstrated the external threat posed to the Jewish state by a nuclear-armed Tehran.

While the Bush administration no longer appears interested in military action against Iran, there is no doubt about Israel’s intentions.

American air and naval power in the Middle East, as well as its current control of Iraqi airspace, would mean that an Israeli attack could not take place without the superpower’s tacit consent.

“We will be blamed for the strike anyway, and certainly feel whatever negative consequences result, so there is compelling logic to make it as successful as possible,” Mr Bolton writes.

“At a minimum, we should place no obstacles in Israel’s path, and facilitate its efforts where we can.”

Mr Bolton said that further rounds of United Nations sanctions were no longer a realistic deterrent.

“We have almost certainly lost the race between giving ’strong incentives’ for Iran to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons, and its scientific and technological efforts to do just that. Swift, sweeping, effectively enforced sanctions might have made a difference five years ago. No longer.”

Iran plans major air drills to boost deterrence

Press TV
July 15, 2008

Iran’s Air Force plans to stage a large-scale combat and defensive drills to beef up deterrence against threats from the US and Israel.

Air Force commander Brigadier General Ahmad Miqani said Tuesday that the armed forces would conduct a military exercise, dubbed Defenders of the Sky of Velayat, to enhance aerial capabilities.

The Iranian Air Force will prove its dominance by immediately crushing anyone who dares to try and penetrate Iran’s airspace, said Brig. Gen. Miqani.

The extensive air maneuvers will follow the six-day drills held by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) directed at demonstrating Iran’s defensive ballistic power.

The IRGC ended an extensive military exercise on Sunday during which Iran successfully test-fired various advanced shore-to-sea, surface-to-surface and sea-to-air missiles.

Iran also tested the upgraded Shahab-3 missile equipped with a one-ton conventional warhead and capable of hitting targets within a 2,000-kilometer range.

Iran to target ‘32 US bases’ if attacked

AFP
July 13, 2008

Iran will target “32 US bases and the heart of Israel” if it is attacked, the Fars news agency quoted an aide to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as saying on Saturday.

“If America and Israel shoot any bullets and missiles against our country, Iranian armed forces will target the heart of Israel and 32 US bases in the region before the dust from this attack has settled,” Mojtaba Zolnoor said.

Zolnoor is Khamenei’s deputy representative for the elite Revolutionary Guards, the force which controls Iran’s more potent weaponry, particularly its longer-range missiles capable of striking Israel and US bases in the Gulf.

The United States and its top regional ally Israel have never ruled out attacking Iran over its nuclear drive, which the West fears could be aimed at making nuclear weapons.

There has been concern an attack against Iran could be imminent after it emerged Israel had carried out manoeuvres in Greece that were effectively practice runs for a potential strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.

Bolton: Israel Will Attack Iran After U.S. Election But Before Inauguration, Arab States Will Be ‘Delighted’
Bolton predicts “likely period” for Israel strike on Iran is between November 4, 2008 and January 20, 2009

Think Progress
June 22, 2008

This morning on Fox News, former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton continued his drumbeat for war against Iran. Adopting Bill Kristol’s argument, Bolton suggested that an attack on Iran depends on who Americans elect as the next President:

I think if they [Israel] are to do anything, the most likely period is after our elections and before the inauguration of the next President. I don’t think they will do anything before our election because they don’t want to affect it. And they’d have to make a judgment whether to go during the remainder of President Bush’s term in office or wait for his successor.

Bolton gamed out the fallout from an attack on Iran. He claimed that Iran’s options to retaliate after being attacked are actually “less broad than people think.” He suggested that Iran would not want to escalate a conflict because 1) it still needs to export oil, 2) it would worry about “an even greater response” from Israel, 3) and it would worry about the U.S.’s response.

Bolton then concluded that Arab states would be excited if the U.S. or Israel attacked Iran:

I don’t think you’d hear the Arab states say this publicly, but they would be delighted if the United States or Israel destroyed the Iranian nuclear weapons capability.

Bolton: Israel Would Be “Delighted” If U.S. Strikes Iranian Training Camps

Think Progress
May 8, 2008

In a Fox News interview this afternoon, former UN Ambassador John Bolton discussed his desire to bomb camps inside Iran that are reportedly training and arming Shiite insurgents who fight in Iraq. Fox host Martha McCallum asked, “Can you imagine a scenario where President Bush would do that before the end of his term?” Bolton responded, “I think so, definitely.” He added later, “This is entirely responsible on our part.”

Asked by McCallum whether Israel would be supportive of the strikes given the possibility of Iranian retaliation, Bolton responded, “I think they’d be delighted.”

Neocon “Scholars” Target Iran’s Oil Infrastructure

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars
June 20, 2008

The L.A. Times’ Babylon & Beyond blog reports on “a serious recommendation made by two neoconservatives in case sanctions fail to persuade Iran to abandon its enrichment of uranium, a process that can be used to make nuclear weapons or fuel for peaceful energy production.” Patrick Clawson and Michael Eisenstadt, described as two “scholars” working for the Washington Institute for Near East Studies, have suggested taking out Iran’s oil infrastructure.

Because the ultimate goal of prevention is to influence Tehran to change course, effective strikes against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure may play an important role in affecting Iran’s decision calculus. Strikes that flatten its nuclear infrastructure could have a demoralizing effect, and could influence Tehran’s assessment of the cost of rebuilding. But the most effective strikes may not necessarily be against nuclear facilities. Iran is extraordinarily vulnerable to attacks on its oil export infrastructure…. The political shock of losing the oil income could cause Iran to rethink its nuclear stance — in ways that attacks on its nuclear infrastructure might not.

Or it may move Iran’s “decision calculus” in a different direction — deadly missile salvos against U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and smoldering oil tankers clogging up passage of the Persian Gulf. If these two criminal minds have their way, you will be paying $10 a gallon or more at the pump for gasoline. No problem for the WINEP “scholars,” who write:

To be sure, in a tight world oil market, attacking Iran’s oil infrastructure carries an obvious risk of causing world oil prices to soar and hurting consumers in the United States and other oil-importing countries…. If the choice is between higher oil prices and a Middle East with several nuclear powers, higher oil prices and reduced economic growth are not clearly the greater evil.

Talk about hubris. But then neocons are more than comfortable with imposing economic hardship on you, considered a lowly commoner and easily distracted chump by the neocons and their globalist associates. It should be remembered that the neocons consider themselves “philosopher-kings,” a self-appointed elite, and advocate benevolent dictatorship – a process well underway — although it remains to be seen how benevolent it would be to freeze to death thousands of people unable to heat their homes or starve them to death because the cannot afford to drive to work.

Bolton: The overthrow of Iran has to come before they get the weapon

Raw Story
January 21, 2008

Fbiiraqisbein_mnFormer US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said on Monday that Israel may have to take military action to prevent its archfoe Iran from acquiring an atomic bomb. Bolton also said that further UN sanctions against the Islamic republic will be ineffective in stopping Iran’s controversial nuclear programme which Israel and the US believe is aimed at developing a bomb — a claim denied by Tehran. “One can say with some assurance that in the next year the use of force by the United States is highly unlikely,” Bolton told AFP on the sidelines of the Herzliya conference on the balance of Israel’s national security. “That increases the pressure on Israel in that period of time… if it feels Iran is on the verge of acquiring that capability, it brings the decision point home to use force,” he said.

The hawkish former diplomat said that after a US intelligence report published late last year that claimed Iran had suspended a nuclear weapons programme in 2003, the US was unlikely to take military action against it.

“The pressure is on Israel now after the National Intelligence Estimate because, I think, the likelihood of American use of force has been dramatically reduced,” he said.

Widely considered the Middle East’s sole if undeclared nuclear power, Israel considers Iran its number one enemy following repeated statements by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for the Jewish state to be wiped off the map.

Bolton said that military action against Iran should be taken before Tehran acquires a bomb.

“The calculus in the region changes dramatically once Iran has nuclear capability, meaning the preemptive use of force or the overthrow of the Iranian regime has to come before they get the weapon,” Bolton said.

“If you are worried about an Iran with nuclear weapons and an extreme theological regime in power, the time to take the plan of action is before Iran acquires the weapons.

“Once it acquires the weapons there is a risk of retaliation with nuclear capability and that’s why Israel is in danger — it is a very small country and two or three nuclear weapons (and) there is no more country. The pressure to act is intensive and the window of time available is narrow.”

Bolton also said that despite Iranian threats to hit hard if it is attacked, “their response will be a lot more measured than people think.”

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert last week said that all options were on the table to prevent an Iranian bomb. The Israeli military last week also successfully test-fired a ballistic missile said to be able to carry a non-conventional warhead.

Bolton said that a new round of United Nations Security Council sanctions against Iran was “unlikely” and that Tehran would not be deterred by further diplomatic sanctions.

“Maybe there will be another resolution but it will be even more toothless than the previous two sanction resolutions… International pressure through diplomacy of sanction has no chance of shifting Iran’s policies over the next year.”

A senior Israeli security official said in reaction that “one should listen very closely to what Bolton has to say.”

Israel warns Iran to co-operate or pay the price

Israel warns Iran to co-operate or pay the price

The Age
December 7, 2007

ISRAEL has warned Iran to either co-operate with the West over its uranium enrichment program or face military action.

Ron Prosor, Israel’s newly appointed ambassador to Britain and one of his country’s leading experts on Iran’s nuclear program, said that Tehran could enrich enough uranium to make an atomic bomb by 2009.

“At the current rate of progress, Iran will reach the technical threshold for producing fissile material by 2009,” he said.

“This is a global threat and it requires a global response.

“It should be made clear that if Iran does not co-operate, then military confrontation is inevitable. It is either co-operation or confrontation.”

Mr Prosor, who served Ehud Olmert, the Israeli Prime Minister, as his senior adviser on Iran, said that time for resolving the nuclear issue was rapidly running out. But he was non-committal about the possibility of Israel launching military action.

“There needs to be full verification of what is happening in Iran,” Mr Prosor said. “In Israel, there is a belief that the Iranians are continuing with their nuclear weapons program.”

U.S. and allies continue to push for sanctions against Iran

RIA Novosti
December 5, 2007

The U.S. and its European allies are continuing to seek stronger sanctions against Iran despite an intelligence report that says the Islamic Republic halted efforts to build a nuclear weapon in 2003.

The U.S. National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), published on Monday, stated that Tehran had put a stop to weapons production in 2003, although it was continuing to enrich uranium.

The report contradicted a previous U.S. intelligence assessment in 2005 which said that Iran was actively pursuing a nuclear bomb.

However, the U.S. envoy to the UN, Zalmay Khalilzad, said on Tuesday that he had received no new instructions from the Bush administration, and that he was preparing to complete work on a new sanctions resolution.

Commenting on the NIE at a news briefing, Khalilzad said, “Let me say what the NIE says and what it doesn’t say. The NIE says that there was a covert military dedicated nuclear weapons program. That in 2003 stopped because of international pressure… But, it does not say that Iran does not have the intention to develop a nuclear weapons capability, that it has abandoned the goal of acquiring a nuclear weapons capability permanently.”

The envoy’s words echoed those of President George W. Bush, who said on Tuesday that, “Iran was dangerous, Iran is dangerous and Iran will be dangerous if they have the know-how to make a nuclear weapon.”

When asked if military action remained an option, the president answered, “The best diplomacy – effective diplomacy – is one in which all options are on the table.”

“What’s to say they couldn’t start another covert nuclear weapons program?” the president told a news conference at the White House.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei welcomed the report, saying it was consistent with the agency’s own findings and that it “should prompt Iran to work actively with the IAEA to clarify specific aspects of its past and present nuclear program.”

“This would allow the agency to provide the required assurances regarding the nature of the program.”

Russia, which has previously stated its opposition to increased sanctions against Teheran, did not comment on the NIE, although President Vladimir Putin insisted that Iran’s nuclear program should be transparent and carried out under the supervision of the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA. Iran’s foreign minister was in Moscow on Tuesday for talks.

China has, however, demonstrated its opposition to new sanctions in more direct terms, saying that the UN Security Council would have to take into account the new information because “now things have changed”.

Britain and France, who have backed U.S. calls for sanctions in the past, reiterated their commitment to maintaining pressure on Iran.

“We must maintain pressure on Iran,” said French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Pascale Andreani. “There is no new element that could make us change our position.”

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband told BBC Radio that, “None of us want to see Iran as a nuclear proliferator. … We have got to be clear there are negative consequences if they pursue enrichment which could lead to a nuclear weapons program.”

Two sets of mild UN sanctions are already in place against Iran. China and Russia have both so far blocked the imposition of any new round of punitive measures against the Islamic Republic.

Iraqi fighters ’grilled for evidence on Iran’

Military interrogator in Iraq: ‘The message [from supervisors] is, “Got to find a link with Iran, got to find a link with Iran.” It’s sickening’

US military officials are putting huge pressure on interrogators who question Iraqi insurgents to find incriminating evidence pointing to Iran, it was claimed last night.

Micah Brose, a privately contracted interrogator working for American forces in Iraq, near the Iranian border, told The Observer that information on Iran is ‘gold’. The claim comes after Washington imposed sanctions on Iran last month, citing both its nuclear ambitions and its Revolutionary Guards’ alleged support of Shia insurgents in Iraq. Last week the US military freed nine Iranians held in Iraq, including two it had accused of links to the Revolutionary Guards’ Qods Force.

Brose, 30, who extracts information from detainees in Iraq, said: ‘They push a lot for us to establish a link with Iran. They have pre-categories for us to go through, and by the sheer volume of categories there’s clearly a lot more for Iran than there is for other stuff. Of all the recent requests I’ve had, I’d say 60 to 70 per cent are about Iran.’

‘It feels a lot like, if you get something and Iran’s not involved, it’s a let down.’ He added: ‘I’ve had people say to me, “They’re really pushing the Iran thing. It’s like, shit, you know.” ‘

Brose said that reports about Washington’s increasingly hawkish stance towards Tehran, including possible military action, chimed with his experience. ‘My impression is they’re just trying to get every little bit of ammunition possible. If we get something here it fits the overall picture. The engine needs impetus and they’re looking for us to find the fuel – a particular type of fuel.

‘It now really depends on who gets elected President in the US. If nothing changes in the current course, I’d say military action is inevitable. But we have to hope there will be a change of course.’

He denied ever being asked to fabricate evidence, adding: ‘We’re not asked to manufacture information, we’re asked to find it. But if a detainee wants to tell me what I want to hear so he can get out of jail… you know what I’m saying.’

Other military intelligence officials in Iraq refused to comment, but one said: ‘The message is, “Got to find a link with Iran, got to find a link with Iran.” It’s sickening.’

Last week in Baghdad the US military showed journalists a recently discovered cache of mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and bomb-making materials it claims are of Iranian origin. Rear Admiral Gregory Smith, spokesman for Multi-National Force Iraq, said it was possible they crossed the border before a recent promise by Iran to stop the flow of munitions into Iraq.

He said: ‘Iran has had a historic malign influence here in Iraq. They have financed many of the activities of Shia extremist groups. In many cases they have done training, they have actually deployed some of their personnel here in theatre. The Qods Force (Iranian Revolutionary Guards) have come here – we know that, we’ve got some in detention. They have said in many cases they were not here and intend to support a more peaceful outcome in Iraq and we look for their excellence in achieving that.’

Among the weapons Washington has accused Iran of supplying to Iraqi insurgents are EFPs, or explosively formed projectiles, which fire a slug of molten metal capable of penetrating even the most heavily armoured military vehicle. The number two US commander in Iraq, Lt Gen Ray Odierno, said there has been a sharp decline in the number of EFPs found in Iraq in the last three months.

Fallon: Iran strike ‘strategic mistake’

Press TV
November 12, 2007

Head of the US Central Command Admiral William Fallon has said the Pentagon is not preparing for a pre-emptive attack against Iran.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Adm. William Fallon said while resolving the Iranian issue is a ‘challenge’ for Washington, a military strike is not ‘in the offing’.

“Another war is just not where we want to go,” said Adm. Fallon, who oversees military operations in the Middle East.

He added that attacking Iran as a means to force Tehran to alter its nuclear policies is not ‘the first choice in [his] book’.

According to several senior active and retired military officers, the Pentagon believes striking Iran would be ‘a strategic mistake’.

The US and its allies have accused the Islamic Republic of pursuing nuclear weaponry, while Iran and UN nuclear watchdog have repeatedly rejected the allegations as ‘baseless’.

Amid Washington’s increasing bellicose rhetoric against Tehran, analysts have raised the question whether Washington plans to wage a war against Iran.

Bush Administration Blocked Waterboarding Critic

Bush Administration Blocked Waterboarding Critic

Former DOJ Official Tested the Method Himself, in Effort to Form Torture Policy

ABC
November 2, 2007

A senior Justice Department official, charged with reworking the administration’s legal position on torture in 2004 became so concerned about the controversial interrogation technique of waterboarding that he decided to experience it firsthand, sources told ABC News.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcO3gRhCihc

Daniel Levin, then acting assistant attorney general, went to a military base near Washington and underwent the procedure to inform his analysis of different interrogation techniques.

After the experience, Levin told White House officials that even though he knew he wouldn’t die, he found the experience terrifying and thought that it clearly simulated drowning.

Levin, who refused to comment for this story, concluded waterboarding could be illegal torture unless performed in a highly limited way and with close supervision. And, sources told ABC News, he believed the Bush Administration had failed to offer clear guidelines for its use.

Bush Administration Blocked Critic

The administration at the time was reeling from an August 2002 memo by Jay Bybee, then the head of the Office of Legal Counsel, which laid out possible justifications for torture. In June 2004, Levin’s predecessor at the office, Jack Goldsmith, officially withdrew the Bybee memo, finding it deeply flawed.

When Levin took over from Goldsmith, he went to work on a memo that would effectively replace the Bybee memo as the administration’s legal position on torture. It was during this time that he underwent waterboarding.

In December 2004, Levin released the new memo. He said, “Torture is abhorrent” but he went on to say in a footnote that the memo was not declaring the administration’s previous opinions illegal. The White House, with Alberto Gonzales as the White House counsel, insisted that this footnote be included in the memo.

But Levin never finished a second memo imposing tighter controls on the specific interrogation techniques. Sources said he was forced out of the Justice Department when Gonzales became attorney general.

Critics Decry Waterboarding as Torture

Critics say waterboarding should never be used.

According to retired Rear Adm. John Hutson, “There is no question this is torture — this is a technique by which an individual is strapped to a board, elevated by his feet and either dunked into water or water poured over his face over a towel or a blanket.”

The legal justification of waterboarding has come to the forefront in the debate swirling around Michael B. Mukasey’s nomination for attorney general.

While Democrats are pressing him to declare waterboarding illegal, he has refused to do so. He calls it personally “repugnant,” but he is unwilling to declare it illegal until he can see the classified information regarding the technique and its current use.

Cheney : Military action still an option with Iran

Cheney : Military action still an option with Iran

The Dallas Morning News
November 3, 2007

Vice President Dick Cheney said Friday that peaceful measures to prevent Iran from menacing the Middle East and developing a nuclear weapons program have not yet worked, leaving military action as a possible solution.

“Nobody wants to resolve this in any means other than peacefully, if it’s at all possible,” Mr. Cheney told the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth.

“But in the final analysis, the worst outcome would be a situation in which Iran is sort of let loose, if you will, in that part of the world with an inventory of nuclear weapons prepared to be used against other nations in the region or to dominate that part of the globe and to threaten not only the United States, but many of our friends and allies out there as well.”

In his speech, Mr. Cheney also rejected proposals that have arisen in Congress to defund the war in Iraq or to immediately withdraw or set a timeline for troop removal there.

“We will prevail in the long run by holding up an alternative to the ideologies of hatred and resentment,” he said. “A free democratic Iraq will be a strategic partner in the heart of the Middle East, helping us fight and win the war on terror.”

The vice president said Iran was trying to topple the government of Lebanon, supporting insurgents inside Iraq and Afghanistan, and enriching uranium, which could be used for a nuclear weapon.

Iran insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, and it has denied providing military support for insurgents in Iraq. In Lebanon, Iran has supported the militant Hezbollah movement, which opposes the pro-Western government.

Mr. Cheney said Iranian leaders must be stopped.

“The president’s made it clear that we have taken no options off the table,” Mr. Cheney said. “It’s the only responsible position for him to take.”

Mr. Cheney’s speech comes a day after Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that Iranian leaders have given assurances that they will try to stop the flow of projectiles and other weapons from Iran to Iraq.

Dr. Gates, however, said that he didn’t know whether to believe the Iranians and that it was too early to tell if the flow of weapons had been reduced.

One expert said it’s unlikely the U.S. would go to war with Iran.

“Because there is no political consensus in the United States to take military action against Iran, and because our military options are limited because of what’s going on in Iraq, the situation is different,” said Jon Wolfsthal, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

But Mr. Cheney “doesn’t want Iran’s leaders to feel so comfortable that they can do anything they want, and he wants them to think about the consequences,” Mr. Wolfsthal said

Mr. Wolfsthal said there were other options in between war and diplomacy, including the use of covert actions and remotely piloted crafts that could be used in strikes.

“The president is clearly trying to keep Iran’s leaders guessing, but in my view there are no good military options,” he said.

Mr. Cheney spent much of his short speech discussing the dangers of a premature withdrawal from Iraq.

He said that security in Baghdad and elsewhere was improving and that there was evidence the troop surge in Iraq was working.

But he added there were difficult days ahead and the country should not lose its resolve.

He likened an early departure from Iraq to the U.S. decision to “walk away” from Afghanistan after the Soviet Union withdrew more than two decades ago, leading to renewed war and an eventual takeover by the Taliban, which provided a haven for al-Qaeda.

“No one can now plead ignorance of the potential consequences of walking away from Iraq, of withdrawing coalition forces before Iraqis can defend themselves or control their sovereign territory,” Mr. Cheney said. “Every tyrant in that region and well beyond would take note of our failed resolve, and friend and foe alike would decide that America’s word cannot be trusted.

“This would only dissipate much of the effort that’s already gone into fighting the global war on terror, and the blows would rain down heavily on those who had had the courage to stand with America in this conflict.”

Friday was a homecoming of sorts for Mr. Cheney, who lived in Dallas for five years while he was CEO of Halliburton Co. when it was based here.

The vice president spoke to the World Affairs Council for about 15 minutes before answering questions that were submitted in advance.

He addressed a question that has dogged the White House since the U.S. invaded Iraq: Is this all about oil?

No, Mr. Cheney said. It just so happens that the Middle East has a lot of oil, and the U.S. consumes a lot of oil. But the U.S. leaders don’t pursue politics to benefit any one particular industry, he said.

He added: “We didn’t go into the Middle East – we didn’t go into Afghanistan because of oil. Afghanistan doesn’t have any oil.”

When asked to comment on Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chávez, Mr. Cheney visibly held himself back.

“Diplomacy is hard sometimes,” he said to the crowd, which included Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson.

Venezuela cut Exxon and other major oil companies out of a major oil field in the country by altering their contracts, and Exxon has filed for international arbitration.

Mr. Cheney also expressed support for building more nuclear power plants in the U.S.

“It’s important from an environmental standpoint,” he said, referring to the fact that nuclear plants don’t emit pollution or greenhouse gases, though they create nuclear waste.

“It’s good, safe technology, and there’s no reason in the world not to use it,” he added.

More than 75 protesters crowded onto a narrow strip of grass outside the Hyatt Regency Dallas, where Mr. Cheney spoke.

And two hecklers managed to make it into the lunch.

While answering audience questions that were read by a moderator, Mr. Cheney was heckled by a war protester wearing a T-shirt that said: “End the War in Iraq Now.” She stood up at the back of room and said, “Don’t attack Iran!”

She was led away by event staff and security.

A few minutes later, a man shouted something similar and was also ushered out. The vice president appeared to hear the second heckler because he paused for a moment, but he made no mention of the interruption.

On Thursday Mr. Cheney headlined a fundraiser for Sen. John Cornyn and the National Republican Senatorial Committee at the home of Dan and Gail Cook.

Beforehand, the vice president went shopping with his wife, Lynne Cheney, at Highland Park Village.

Staff writer Elizabeth Souder contributed to this report.

Bolton: U.S. should pursue “regime change” in Iran

Iran Focus
November 4, 2007
..

London, Nov. 03 – Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton says he believes further negotiations will not convince Tehran to abandon its suspected nuclear weapons program, and ultimately Washington should be considering to pursue a policy of “regime change” in Iran.

” I think diplomatic approaches are not going to stop Iran from continuing to perfect its nuclear-weapons programs”, Bolton told The New York Times Magazine in an interview to be published on Sunday. ” Our options are very limited and not all that attractive, one being regime change in Tehran, the other being the use of force”.

Asked why he believed Tehran should not have nuclear weapons, Bolton pointed to the theocratic nature of the regime.

“When you have a regime that would be happier in the afterlife than in this life, this is not a regime that is subject to classic theories of deterrence. Retaliation for them, which would obliterate their society, doesn’t have the same negative connotations for their leadership”, he said.

Report: Russia Evacuates Entire Bushehr Staff

Report: Russia Evacuates Entire Bushehr Staff
Iranian news outlet claims nuclear experts packed their bags Friday, increasing speculation of imminent U.S., Israeli attack

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
October 1, 2007

Iranian and Israeli news outlets are reporting that Russia has evacuated its entire staff of nuclear engineers and experts who were working at the Bushehr nuclear reactor, increasing speculation that the United States is preparing an imminent military attack on Iran.

According to the Khorramshar News Agency, which represents ethnic Arabs in opposition to Ahmadinejad’s regime who live near the reactor, the Russians packed their bags and left on Friday.

DEBKAfile offers three different scenarios to explain the sudden withdrawal of the experts.

a) Russian-Iranian negotiations about how work will proceed on Bushehr have again hit a roadblock. This is highly unlikely because Vladimir Putin is set to visit Iran later in the month to sign a set of nuclear accords.

b) The Russians have learned that an Iranian attack against American interests in the Persian Gulf or Israel is imminent. This is extremely doubtful because any preemptive Iranian attack would give Israel and the U.S. the pretext they are desperately searching for to launch a devastating bombing campaign.

c) Moscow or Tehran have been tipped off that an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities is imminent and the Russians are getting their people out of harm’s way. This seems to be the most plausible scenario, especially since reports emerged Friday from numerous “unnamed” worldwide intelligence sources that military action is just around the corner.

With every passing week, war rhetoric and maneuvering escalates as an assault on Iran seems all but inevitable.

This past weekend, Former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said there was no alternative to a military option and that plans should be enacted for a “limited strike against their nuclear facilities.”

Veteran newsman Seymour Hersh reports that the Bush administration has switched targets from Iran’s nuclear facilities to instead target the Revolutionary Guard in a series of planned “surgical” air strikes.

“During a video conference over the summer, Bush allegedly told Ryan Crocker, the US ambassador to Iraq, that he was considering striking Iranian targets across the border and that the British “were on board,” reports AFP.

Bolton: Attack Iran, ‘remove’ its leader

Bolton: Attack Iran, ‘remove’ its leader

The Jerusalem Post
September 30, 2007

Former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton told Tory delegates in Britain Sunday that efforts by the UK and the EU to negotiate with Iran had failed and that he saw no alternative to a pre-emptive strike on suspected nuclear facilities in the country.

Bolton said that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was “pushing out” and “is not receiving adequate push-back” from the West.
“I don’t think the use of military force is an attractive option, but I would tell you I don’t know what the alternative is.

“Because life is about choices, I think we have to consider the use of military force. I think we have to look at a limited strike against their nuclear facilities.”

He added that any strike should be followed by an attempt to remove the “source of the problem”, Ahmadinejad.

“If we were to strike Iran it should be accompanied by an effort at regime change … The US once had the capability to engineer the clandestine overthrow of governments. I wish we could get it back,” he said.

Bolton said that the fact that only partial intelligence about Iran’s nuclear activity existed should not be used as an excuse not to act.

“Intelligence can be wrong in more than one direction… Responding after they (nuclear devices) are used is unacceptable.”
Bolton also said the UN was “fundamentally irrelevant”.

The former envoy criticized Britain’s “softly softly” approach to Iran’s imprisonment of 15 British sailors in April.

They were released after Ahmadinejad announced he was making a “gift” to the British people. “They [Iran] got no response from the UK or the US. If you were the Iranian leader, what conclusion do you draw?”

Brown accused of backing U.S. plans for bombing raids on Iran

Daily Mail
October 2, 2007

Gordon Brown is backing U.S. plans for “surgical” bombing raids on Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, it has been claimed.

A leading American journalist said U.S. commanders had been drawing up plans to target Iran’s nuclear facilities but were told this summer to focus instead on the guards, who have been blamed for attacks on U.S. and British forces in Iraq.

Seymour Hersh, known to have high-level contacts in the Pentagon, said: “During a secure videoconference that took place early this summer, the President told Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, he was thinking of hitting Iranian targets across the border and that the British ‘were on board’.”

Writing in the magazine New Yorker, Hersh continued: “The bombing plan has had its most positive reception from the newly elected government of Britain’s Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.”

He claimed a retired American general told him Britain “may want to do it to get even” due to the embarrassment of the Revolutionary Guards’ capture of Royal Navy sailors and Marines in March.

But the general added that the “burden of proof” would have to be high to win Mr Brown’s final support due to a “widespread belief in London that Tony Blair’s government was sold a bill of goods by the White House in the build-up to the war against Iraq”.

Hersh said Mr Brown shared the White House view that Iran is five years from building a nuclear bomb and the more pressing threat is its support for terrorist groups.

The White House believes it could fend off criticism of limited strikes against Iran by arguing that they were a defensive action to save soldiers in Iraq.

Hersh, a Pulitzer Prizewinner, wrote the first stories about the abuse of Iraqis by U.S. forces at Abu Ghraib prison.

Downing Street dismissed his claims last night.

Mr Brown’s official spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has made clear in the past that there are no such proposals.”

Bush Rules out Bombing Iran; Unless ’accidnetial’ conflict

Foreign policy expert says Bush has ruled out first-strike on Iran; Worries about ‘accidental’ conflict

September 19, 2007

President Bush is not going to bomb Iran — unless an “accidental” incident forces his hand, according to well-respected foreign policy moderate Steve Clemons, who laid out his case in Wednesday’s Salon article, “Why Bush Won’t Attack Iran.”

Clemons, director of the American Strategy Program at New America Foundation and publisher of The Washington Note, says Bush has deviated from a Cheney-laid track to launch a first-strike on Iran, citing, as examples, frustrations that the vice president’s aides are airing, a conversation with a journalist who sat in on a December 2006 strategy meeting, and private conversations with high-level foreign policy players.

In a telephone conversation with RAW STORY Wednesday, Clemons emphasized that he wasn’t arguing that there wouldn’t be an American conflict with Iran. Rather, he believes that Bush has opted not to strike Iran in a first-strike scenario. His gravest concern, he said, was that the US might seize on an accidental incident — such as a collision between a US and Iranian ship or a border skirmish between Iraq and Iran — as a causis belli.

“A mistake in the Gulf where ships collide or US soldiers are attacked or Israel fires a low-level cruise missile attack against Natanz or there’s a border skirmish between Iraq and Iran that results in the death of a high-ranking military or diplomatic official – any of these could spark a conflict,” he said.

Of the indications that Bush has thus far tabled a preemptive strike, Clemons believes “the most significant is that the Cheney wing feels that Bush is not on their side and they’re frustrated with that. The fact that the Cheney wing feels they need to tie Bush’s hands, ‘end run’ the president and remove the ‘diplomatic course’ from the field of options in front of the President is an indication that Bush hasn’t decided to bomb.”

Clemons cites a report by Time Magazine journalist and commentator Joe Klein, which spoke of a meeting Klein sat in on in December 2006.

Then Bush asked about the possibility of a successful attack on Iran’s nuclear capability. He was told that the U.S. could launch a devastating air attack on Iran’s government and military, wiping out the Iranian air force, the command and control structure and some of the more obvious nuclear facilities. But the Chiefs were — once again — unanimously opposed to taking that course of action.

Why? Because our intelligence inside Iran is very sketchy. There was no way to be sure that we could take out all of Iran’s nuclear facilities. Furthermore, the Chiefs warned, the Iranian response in Iraq and, quite possibly, in terrorist attacks on the U.S. could be devastating. Bush apparently took this advice to heart and went to Plan B — a covert destabilization campaign reported earlier this week by ABC News.
“I think a classic war buildup that we had with Iraq is not possible for Iran,” he continued. “There are too many inter-agency blocks.”

“I’m not saying there won’t be any war but nothing in Bush’s posture suggests he’s really with the Cheney gang yet. But I do worry about the Cheney gang and the [Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps]/Ahmadinejad crowd in Iran trying to precipitate a spark that produces a very fast escalation that circumvents most of Bush’s national security decisionmaking structure — and that kind of war is something we should worry about. That’s what I think could happen.

“An ‘accidental war’ would escalate quickly and ‘end run,’ as Cheney aide [David] Wurmser put[s] it, the president’s diplomatic, intelligence and military decision-making apparatus,” Clemons wrote in his Salon editorial. “It would most likely be triggered by one or both of the two people who would see their political fortunes rise through a new conflict — Cheney and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”

Increased CIA activity on the ground

RAW STORY has reported on alleged attempts by the Office of the Vice President to provoke Iran into a first strike situation as a pre-text for US strikes.

Managing Editor Larisa Alexandrovna reported in August on alleged new activities by the Central Intelligence Agency, seen by some to suggest US escalating its attempts to provoke Iran.

A senior intelligence official told RAW STORY that the CIA had stepped up operations in the region, shifting their Iran focus to “other” approaches in preference to the “black propaganda” that Raw Story “has already reported on.”

The source would not elaborate on what these “other” approaches are. At the time, CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano would neither confirm nor deny that “other” operations were taking place.

“The CIA does not, as a matter of course, comment on allegations involving clandestine operations, despite the large amount of misinformation that circulates publicly on the subject,” Gimigliano said.

RAW STORY revealed in June that Iran was being targeted by CIA activities promoting a “pro-democracy” message and that the agency was supporting overt “pro-democracy” groups.

Clemons first revealed a battle between Cheney aides and those at the State and Defense Department in May. Supporting a pre-emptive strike, he said, was Cheney’s office; opposing was Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell.

“The thinking on Cheney’s team is to collude with Israel, nudging Israel at some key moment in the ongoing standoff between Iran’s nuclear activities and international frustration over this to mount a small-scale conventional strike against Natanz using cruise missiles (i.e., not ballistic missiles),” he wrote.

Bolton Hopes U.S. Will Attack Iran in 6 Months

Bolton: I ‘Absolutely’ Hope The U.S. Will Attack Iran In The Next ‘Six Months’

Think Progress
August 23, 2007

Yesterday, Raw Story pointed out that former CIA operative Bob Baer told Fox News that the Bush administration will likely attack Iran in the coming months. “Iran policy is on close hold, but the feeling is we will hit the Islamic Revolutionary Guard corps sometime next six months or so,” said Baer.

Today, former U.N. ambassador John Bolton appeared on Fox News and responded. He said that while he couldn’t confirm Baer’s statements, he “absolutely” hoped they were true:

HEMMER: One final step here, too, that I want to take with you. You told one of our producers earlier today that you don’t know if it’s true — and you’ve made that clear in our interview here, that you don’t know what the odds are or are not against that — but you hope it’s true. Why do you hope it’s true?

BOLTON: Absolutely. I hope Iran understands that we are very serious, that we are determined they are not going to get a nuclear weapon capability, and unless they change the strategic decision they’ve been pursuing for close to 20 years, that that’s something they better factor into their calculations.

Bolton’s calls for strikes against Iran mirror those of other neocons, such as Bill Kristol and Michael Rubin, who also pushed for the Iraq invasion. Bolton’s claim that “Iran is interfering in Iraq and is posing a direct threat to our troops” is not a reason to strike the country. In reality, both Gen. Peter Pace and the National Intelligence Estimate have confirmed that Iran is “not likely” to be a major driver of violence in Iraq.

Lieberman: If “we” don’t attack Iran we’ll be seen as weak..
