Sugar now coming from genetically modified sugar beets

Sugar now coming from genetically modified sugar beets

This year saw the first commercial planting of genetically modified (GM) sugar beets in the United States, with that sugar to hit the food supply soon after.

Farmers across the country will soon be planting Monsanto’s Roundup Ready sugar beet, genetically engineered for resistance to Monsanto’s herbicide glyphosate (marketed as Roundup). John Schorr, agriculture manager for Amalgamated Sugar, estimates that 95 percent of the sugar beet crop in Idaho will be of the new GM variety in 2008, or a total of 150,000 out of 167,000 acres.

Approximately 1.4 million acres of sugar beets are planted in the United States each year, primarily in Minnesota and North Dakota’s Red River Valley, as well as the Pacific Northwest, Great Plains and Great Lakes areas.

In response to the anticipated flood of GM sugar onto the food market, the consumer group Citizens for Health has launched an email campaign to pressure three major sugar and candy companies to refuse the new product. In 2001, American Crystal Sugar, Hershey’s and M&M Mars all promised that they would not use GM sugar; Citizens for Health is asking consumers to email those companies from the group’s Web site and urge them to keep that promise.

“Since half of the granulated sugar in the U.S. comes from sugar beets, the infiltration of GE sugar beets represents a significant alteration of our food supply,” Citizens for Health says on its Web site. “Unlike traditional breeding, genetic engineering creates new life forms that would never occur in nature, creating new and unpredictable health and environmental risks.”

In 1999, candy companies’ refusal to purchase GM sugar scuttled Monsanto’s first attempt to introduce Roundup Ready sugar beets.

On another front, a coalition of farmer and environmental groups is seeking to block the planting of the GM beets through a federal lawsuit. The plaintiffs in the case – the Center for Food Safety, High Mowing Organic Seeds, the Organic Seed Alliance and the Sierra Club – are represented by lawyers from the Center for Food Safety and Earthjustice.

In 2005, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) changed the classification of Roundup Ready sugar beets from regulated to deregulated, meaning that the GM beets could be planted without a special permit. But the lawsuit alleges that the USDA failed to properly conduct an environmental review into the impacts of this deregulation.

“The law requires the government to take a hard look at the impact that deregulating Roundup Ready sugar beets will have on human health, agriculture and the environment,” said Greg Loarie of Earthjustice. “The government cannot simply ignore the fact that deregulation will harm organic farmers and consumers, and exacerbate the growing epidemic of herbicide resistant weeds.”

Critics point out that Roundup Ready crops encourage increased chemical use, with dangerous effects on both human health and the environment. In addition to contaminating soil and water, pesticides leave potentially dangerous residue on food plants themselves.

Citizens for Health says that this is a particular concern in light of the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent compliance with a Monsanto request to increase the allowable levels of glyphosate residue on sugar beet roots by 5000 percent.

“Sugar is extracted from the beet’s root, and the result is more glyphosate pesticide in our sugar,” the group said.

Another concern is that such plants encourage the development of “superweeds” that are resistant to Roundup.

“Just as overuse of antibiotics eventually breeds drug resistant bacteria, overuse of Roundup eventually breeds Roundup-resistant weeds,” said Kevin Golden of the Center for Food Safety. “When that happens, farmers are forced to rely on even more toxic herbicides to control those weeds.”

USDA data reveals that in the 10 years after the 1994 introduction of Roundup Ready crops, herbicide use increased by 15 times. This has led to a concurrent increase in superweeds. While no cases of Roundup-resistant weeds were known in the U.S. corn belt in 2000, this year the roster of such weeds includes marestail, common and giant ragweed, waterhemp, Palmer pigweed, Cocklebur, lambsquarters, morning glory and velvetleaf.

Ninety-nine percent of U.S. superweeds are resistant to Roundup.

GM crops may also cross-breed with non-GM plants of the same or closely related species. The primary seed-growing region for sugar beets – the Willamette Valley of Oregon – is also a major seed-growing area for the closely related organic chard and table beets. Since all these species are wind pollinated, the chances of contamination are very high.

“Contamination from genetically modified pollen is a major risk to both the conventional and organic seed farmers, who have a long history in the Willamette Valley,” said Matthew Dillon, director of advocacy for the Organic Seed Alliance. “The economic impact of contamination affects not only these seed farmers, but the beet and chard farmers who rely on the genetic integrity of their varieties.”

Crops contaminated by cross-pollination with GM varieties can no longer be certified organic.

Since corn syrup is an even more widely used sweetener than sugar and the majority of corn grown in the United States is also Roundup Ready, food safety advocates note that nearly all sweetened food in the United States will soon be GM. Because U.S. law does not require labeling of GM ingredients, consumers of products from candy to breakfast cereal will soon be unknowingly exposed to engineered sugar, with unknown health consequences.

“As a consumer, I’m very concerned about genetically engineered sugar making its way into the products I eat,” Neil Carman of the Sierra Club said.

Radioactive Waste From Iraq Wars Dumped in U.S.

Radioactive Waste From Iraq Wars Dumped in U.S.

Doug Rokke, Ph.D.

American Free Press
July 21, 2008

During the summer of 1991, the United States military had collected artillery, tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles, conventional and unconventional munitions, trucks, etc at Camp Doha in Kuwait.

As result of carelessness, this weapons depot caught fire with consequent catastrophic explosions resulting in death, injury, illness and extensive environmental contamination from depleted uranium and conventional explosives.

Recently the emirate of Kuwait required the U.S. Department of Defense to remove the contamination. Consequently, over 6,700 tons of contaminated soil, sand and other residue was collected and shipped back to the United States for burial by American Ecology at Boise, Idaho.

When Bob Nichols, an investigative journalist, and I contacted American Ecology we found out that they had absolutely no knowledge of U.S. Army regulations and all of the medical orders dealing with depleted uranium contamination, environmental remediation procedures, safety and medical care.

They had never heard of Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for dealing with hazardous waste such as radioactive materials and conventional explosives byproducts.

The trans-shipment across the ocean, unloading at Longview, Washington State port, transport by rail, and burial in Idaho not only endanger the residents of these areas, but pose a significant agricultural threat through introduction of pests, microbes etc. foreign to our nation.

Sadly, the known adverse health and environmental hazards from uranium weapons contamination are in our own backyard. The EPA has listed the former Nuclear Metals-Starmet uranium weapons manufacturing site in Concord, Mass. on the EPA’s Superfund National Priority List because it poses a significant risk to public health and the environment.

Consequently, the community in which our nation was born on April 18, 1775, is now the location of America’s own closed dirty bomb factory that will endanger the health and safety of the descendants of the Minutemen.

The previous delivery of at least 100 GBU 28 bunker buster bombs containing depleted uranium warheads by the United States and their use by Israel against Lebanese targets has resulted in additional radioactive and chemical toxic contamination with consequent adverse health and environmental effects throughout the Middle East. Israeli tank gunners are also using depleted uranium tank rounds, as photographs verify.

Today, U.S., British, and now Israeli military personnel are using illegal uranium munitions—America’s and England’s own “dirty bombs.” The U.S. Army, Department of Energy, Department of Defense and British Ministry of Defense officials deny that there are any adverse health and environmental effects as a consequence of the manufacture, testing and/or use of uranium munitions. They do so to avoid liability for the willful and illegal dispersal of a radioactive toxic material— depleted uranium.

The use of uranium weapons is a crime against humanity. All governments must force cessation of uranium weapons use. Israel should provide medical care to all DU casualties in Lebanon and clean up all DU contamination.

U.S. and British officials have arrogantly refused to comply with their own regulations, orders and directives that require U.S. Department of Defense officials to provide prompt and effective medical care to all exposed individuals. They also refuse to clean up dispersed radioactive contamination as required by Army regulations.

Dr. Doug Rokke is the former director of the Army’s Depleted Uranium Project. It was his task to clean up the radioactive battlefields of the Gulf War.

Building NAFTA’s CANAMEX Supercorridor

Building NAFTA’s CANAMEX Supercorridor

JBS
March 11, 2008

The mainstream press frequently reports that NAFTA trade corridors are a fiction. Meanwhile, work on NAFTA superhighways continues, usually in the open for everyone to see. An example is the CANAMEX corridor. According to the CANAMEX Corridor Coalition:

Since its inception in 1995, the CANAMEX Corridor has grown to become the cornerstone for the seamless and efficient transportation of goods, services, people and information between Canada, Mexico and the United States. As the implementation of NAFTA moves toward fruition, the CANAMEX Corridor will broaden its initiatives to harvest the benefits of increased trade, tourism and economic activity within the region. [emphasis added]

The CANAMEX Coalition helpfully notes that Congress approved the corridor in the 1995 National Highway Systems Designation Act as a “High Priority Corridor.” The Act is now Public Law 104-59, and it specifies:

(26) The CANAMEX Corridor from Nogales, Arizona, through Las Vegas, Nevada, to Salt Lake City, Utah, to Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Montana, to the Canadian Border as follows:

(A) In the State of Arizona, the CANAMEX Corridor shall generally follow– (i) I-19 from Nogales to Tucson; (ii) I-10 from Tucson to Phoenix; and (iii) United States Route 93 in the vicinity of Phoenix to the Nevada Border.

(B) In the State of Nevada, the CANAMEX Corridor shall follow– (i) United States Route 93 from the Arizona Border to Las Vegas; and (ii) I-15 from Las Vegas to the Utah Border.

(C) From the Utah Border through Montana to the Canadian Border, the CANAMEX Corridor shall follow I-15.

The latest action taken to move “the implementation of NAFTA … toward fruition” was Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano’s Executive Order 2008-08. The Executive Order specifies:

The task force known as the Governor’s CANAMEX Task Force (“Task Force”) shall be continued and shall serve the purpose of coordinating statewide CANAMEX efforts and coordinating with other applicable states, provinces and nations in the development of the CANAMEX Corridor.

US police slogan: Go out, Cause PTSD

US police slogan: Go out, Cause PTSD

Press TV

December 26, 2007

The US police face a new scandal after revelation that the slogan of one its academies is ‘Cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)’.

The revelation came after a photograph of the graduation program of a police academy in the state of Idaho was e-mailed anonymously to news outlets throughout the state.

It showed that the slogan, “Don’t suffer from PTSD, go out and cause it,” is printed on the academy’s graduation programs.

“It shouldn’t have been there. It was inappropriate.” said Jeff Black, the director of Idaho Police Officer Standards and Training.

Disavowing the slogan, Black said the class president was ex-military, and that the slogan “slipped in.”

According to the US Veterans Association, tens of thousands of US soldiers suffer from PTSD, which causes nightmares, flashbacks and physical symptoms.

PTSD makes sufferers feel as if they are reliving trauma, even many years later.

Man Arrested After He Fought Off Burglars

Fox Orlando
December 26, 2007

A South Orlando man got some uninvited Christmas Eve guests Monday night.

Arif Sameja walked into his south Orlando apartment to find three people he didn’t know inside.

When he tried to stop them he wound up in handcuffs.

Overnight, Arif Sameja was watching movies at a downstairs neighbor’s house when he heard a loud boom. Sameja said it sounded like it came from his apartment directly upstairs.

Sameja ran up and found his front door kicked in. He rushed back to his friends apartment and grabbed a bat as his friend called 911. When Sameja went into his apartment he found it had been ransacked. Moments later he discovered two people were hiding in the bathroom and another crouched in his closet. He soon realized he was outnumbered.

“One of the (suspects) ran out and tried to punch me,” Sameja said. “He hit me a couple of times, and I punched him in the face. He tried to run out of the apartment and I had a bat so I turned around and hit him in the back of the head.”

Deputies arrived as Sameja and one of the suspects were running down stairs.

Sameja, bat in hand, was handcuffed and put into the back of a deputy’s cruiser. By the time deputies realized they cuffed the wrong guy, the bad guys were gone. They’re still on the run.

The thieves got away with Sameja’s wallet and his laptop computer. They also had his flat screen TV, Playstation 3 and other valuables in the middle of the floor ready to go.
