Israel wants defenseless Palestine, control over airspace
Press TV
August 18, 2008
An Israeli security plan presented to the United States demands that any future Palestinian state not have defense forces or weapons.
The plan, which was published by the Israeli Maariv Daily on Sunday, laid out what the paper called the security arrangements that Israel plans to implement after reaching a peace deal with the Palestinians.
According to the plan, Israel would set up alarm stations on the West Bank hills, deploy forces to the Jordanian border and exercise full control over Palestinian airspace.
The plan has drawn angry reactions from Palestinian political groups, who argue that the proposals would completely erase the concept of an independent Palestinian state.
“If the plan is accepted by the Palestinians, it will kill the Palestinian dream to establish an independent state,” Hamas spokesman Ismail Radwan said in a Sunday statement.
He added that the democratically-elected Palestinian government of Hamas strongly warned all groups against accepting such a “disastrous plan”, which would “completely” serve the interests of Israel.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) also slammed the published Israeli security plan.
“This plan is impossible and there is no way that we can accept it,” said senior PFLP leader, Rabah Muhana.
“The plan is completely rejected. Not only would it not prepare the ground for an everlasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians, but it would give rise to a permanent atmosphere of escalating tension.”
A senior Islamic Jihad leader Nafez Azzam also said that the plan would never be implemented, as it was a scheme that Israel and the US devised to elude a real solution.

U.S. stalls Israeli military strike on Iran
Haaretz
August 8, 2008
The American administration has rejected an Israeli request for military equipment and support that would improve Israel’s ability to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.
A report published last week by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) states that military strikes are unlikely to destroy >Iran’s centrifuge program for enriching uranium.
The Americans viewed the request, which was transmitted (and rejected) at the highest level, as a sign that Israel is in the advanced stages of preparations to attack Iran. They therefore warned Israel against attacking, saying such a strike would undermine American interests. They also demanded that Israel give them prior notice if it nevertheless decided to strike Iran.
As compensation for the requests it rejected, Washington offered to improve Israel’s defenses against surface-to-surface missiles.
Israel responded by saying it reserves the right to take whatever action it deems necessary if diplomatic efforts to halt Iran’s nuclearization fail.
Senior Israeli officials had originally hoped that U.S. President George Bush would order an American strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities before leaving office, as America’s military is far better equipped to conduct such a strike successfully than is Israel’s.
Jerusalem also fears that an Israeli strike, even if it succeeded well enough to delay Iran’s nuclear development for a few years, would give Iran international legitimacy for its program, which it currently lacks. Israel, in contrast, would be portrayed as an aggressor, and would be forced to contend alone with Iran’s retaliation, which would probably include thousands of missile strikes by Iranian allies Hezbollah, Hamas and perhaps even Syria.
Rice: Israel Can Attack Iran if It Wants
The Jerusalem Post
August 10, 2008
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended Israel’s right to make its own decision about whether it takes military action against Iran, in an interview released over the weekend.
“We don’t say yes or no to Israeli military operations. Israel is a sovereign country,” she said in response to a question from The Politico Web site as to whether she was concerned that America would be blamed in the case of an IDF attack on the Islamic Republic.
Her statements come amid speculation that Washington has warned Jerusalem not to attack Iran and media reports that the US told Israel it doesn’t have the green light to use Iraqi airspace for any such attack.
US: No plan for naval blockade of Iran
Press TV
August 13, 2008
A senior official with the US Defense Department has dismissed reports that Washington is planning a naval blockade of Iran.
“As a matter of policy we do not discuss current or future ship’s movements. However, I can tell you that reports of an alleged naval blockade of Iran are false,” Lt. Col. Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for the assistant secretary of defense for public affairs told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday.
“We routinely rotate deployed naval forces in the USCENTCOM area of responsibility,” he added.
The US Central Command supervises US military operations in the Middle East, East Africa and Central Asia.
On Monday, Egypt’s Middle East Times reported that a massive US and European armada was heading towards the Persian Gulf for a naval blockade of Iran.
The report said that the force included the nuclear-powered American aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt as well as forces from the British Royal Navy and a French nuclear submarine.

U.S. ’diplomatic’ talks in Iran to legitimize attack
Jerusalem Post
July 27, 2008
Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen (L) salutes Israeli Chief of Defense Forces, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi who recently warned that all options must be prepared against Iran.
Recent talks the United States held with Iran are aimed at creating legitimacy for a potential attack against Iranian nuclear facilities, defense officials speculated on Sunday as Defense Minister Ehud Barak headed to Washington for talks with senior administration officials.
Barak will travel to Washington and New York and will hold talks with his counterpart Robert Gates, Vice President Dick Cheney, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Michael Mullen, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.
Officials said it was likely that President George W. Bush would join the meeting between Barak and Hadley. On Wednesday, Barak will fly to New York for a brief meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon.
Barak’s departure to the US came as IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi returned to Israel on Sunday from a week-long visit to the US as Mullen’s guest. Ashkenazi held talks with Cheney, Hadley and other senior officials with a focus on the Iranian nuclear program.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak (L) on Tuesday said; “A policy that consists of keeping all options on the table must be maintained” shakes hands with Barack Obama who also states would take “no options off the table”.
“There is a lot of strategic thinking concerning Iran going on right now but no one has yet to make a decision what to do,” said a top IDF officer, involved in the dialogue between Israel and the US. “We are still far away from the point where military officers are poring over maps together planning an operation.”
In recent weeks, Mullen has said publicly that he is opposed to military action against Iran which would open a “third front” for the US military which is currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Barak’s talks in the US come a little over a week after the Bush administration sent its number three diplomat to Geneva to participate in European Union talks with Iran over its nuclear program.
The move led to reports that the US was changing its isolation tactic vis-à-vis Iran but Israeli defense officials speculated Sunday that the move was really a ploy to buy international support in the event that Bush decides to attack Iran in his last months in office.
“This way they will be able to say they tried everything,” one official speculated. “This increases America’s chances of gaining more public support domestically as well as the support of European nations which are today opposed to military action.”
Diplomatic officials have speculated that the Iran-US talks were also connected to the presidential elections.
According to the IDF officer, the frequent meetings between Israel and the US in recent weeks – Mullen was in Israel in June – is a sign of the strong ties between the two countries as well as the mutual interest both take in different regional issues such as Iran, Hizbullah, Hamas and Syria.
Bolton: U.S. should help Israel hit Iran
Jewish Ledger
July 25, 2008
Former U.N. ambassador John Bolton said the United States should assist Israel in any strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The ex-U.S. envoy in an op-ed in the July 15 Wall Street Journal said the United States must consider what assistance to extend to Israel before and after an airstrike.
“We will be blamed for the strike anyway, and certainly feel whatever negative consequences result, so there is compelling logic to make it as successful as possible,” wrote Bolton, who was known for his hawkish foreign policy views.
“At a minimum, we should place no obstacles in Israel’s path, and facilitate its efforts where we can.” Bolton said the efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions through sanctions had failed, and even if they could still be enacted, the time for their effectiveness has passed.

Obama: No Option Off The Table On Iran
Reuters
July 23, 2008
U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said on Wednesday a nuclear Iran would pose a “grave threat” and that the world must stop Tehran from obtaining an atomic weapon.
Obama told reporters during a visit to Israel that if elected, he would take “no options off the table” in dealing with the Iran issue and said tougher sanctions could be imposed.
“A nuclear Iran would pose a grave threat and the world must prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” Obama told reporters after visiting the Israeli town of Sderot, which lies close to the border with the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
He said the international community should immediately offer “big sticks and big carrots” to persuade Iran to halt its nuclear program. The West suspects Iran wants to build atom bombs but the Islamic Republic says its aims are peaceful.
“Iranians need to understand that whether it’s the Bush administration or the Obama administration, this is a paramount concern to the United States,” he said in Sderot, which has been hit by cross-border rockets fired by Gaza-based militants.
McCain, Obama agree: U.S. must dominate Middle East
PSL Web
July 26, 2008
Senators John McCain and Barack Obama differ in their proposals for when and how the United States should begin a major troop withdrawal from Iraq, and under what conditions they would enter into negotiations with the government of Iran.
On just about every other issue related to U.S policy in the Middle East, the presumptive presidential candidates of the Republican and Democratic parties are in near total agreement. And when it comes to the goal, the word “near” can be deleted. Both share—as must all ruling class-approved candidates for the position of CEO of the empire—an unquestioning dedication to U.S. domination of that key strategic region. Seventy percent of known global oil reserves are located in the Middle East.
Both Obama and McCain have expressed a limitless devotion to the state of Israel. Both have emerged as leading voices in the chorus of demonization against the governments of Iran, Syria and Sudan, and popular movements such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Hamas and other Palestinian resistance organizations.
Obama: air strike on Iran useless
Press TV
July 24, 2008
The White House hopeful Barack Obama says an air strike on Iran will not halt its nuclear program, calling for tougher Iran sanctions.
“Iran is a big country. They have dispersed their nuclear capabilities in a way that you are not going to see smooth, surgical strikes solving the problem entirely the way that Israel was able to deal with Iraq’s nuclear threat,” he told ABC News.
The Illinois senator called for “tough sanctions” coupled with “tough diplomacy that makes the calculus for the Iranians different.”
While insisting that “war is not a good option,” Obama maintained that he “would not take military options off the table when it comes to Iran and dealing with their nuclear capacity.”
The US has set a two-week deadline for Tehran to halt its nuclear program, after their talks on Iran’s nuclear program.
Envoys from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council–China, Russia, the US, Britain and France–plus Germany held a meeting in Geneva on Saturday to discuss Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran fires more missiles in war games
AFP
July 10, 2008
The weapons fired in the Gulf by the naval section of the Revolutionary Guards included shore-to-sea, surface-to-surface and sea-to-air missiles, state television said. No details were given on the names of the missiles.
It said the war games also included firing the Hoot (Whale) torpedo that Iran unveiled in April 2006 and which it says is a super-fast weapon capable of hitting enemy submarines.
Iran on Wednesday test-fired its Shahab-3 long-range missile, which the Islamic republic says can reach Israel and US bases in the Gulf, and eight other more medium-range missiles.
The move sparked major concern in Western governments which say they fear Iran’s nuclear drive is aimed at making atomic weapons, a charge that Tehran vehemently denies.
In a separate land exercise late on Wednesday, the military also fired “longer and medium range missiles,” state television said, showing several missiles being fired into the night sky.
Footage was also broadcast of the naval manoeuvres, showing divers fixing mines to a pier, missiles being fired from shore-based mobile launchers and the Hoot speeding towards a target.
Israel ’ready to act’ over Iran
BBC
July 10, 2008
Israel’s defence minister has warned of his country’s readiness to act against Iran if it feels threatened.
Ehud Barak, speaking in Tel Aviv, said Israel had “proved in the past that it won’t hesitate to act when its vital security interests are at stake”.
He spoke as Iran’s testing of missiles that could reach Israel stoked tensions between the two, and with the US.
But Mr Barak added that diplomatic solutions should be pursued before other options were taken up.
“Currently the focus is international sanctions and vigorous diplomatic activity, and these avenues should be exhausted,” he said.
US warning
Over the past two days, the Iranian military has tested missiles, including one that it says could reach Israel.
State media said the tests included the first night launch of the Shahab-3 missile, said to have a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles), along with shore-to-sea, surface-to-surface and sea-to-air missiles.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the US had increased its security in the region and Iran should not be “confused” about US capabilities.
Israel has responded to the missile tests by putting on display one of its aircraft that it says can spy on Iran.
The state-run Israel Aerospace Industries says it has equipped its Eitam aeroplane, unveiled a year ago, with sophisticated intelligence-gathering systems.
Mr Barak spoke of the “potential for accords, particularly with the Palestinians and the Syrians”, but stressed that the situation was very complex.
Quoted by Israeli news website Ynet, Mr Barak said: “We must work towards an accord – but if not, then we must strike our enemy when it is required.”
He also warned that Israel must consider the reactions from other nations in the region that could be provoked by action against Iran.
“The responses of our adversaries must be taken into account. Hamas and Hezbollah and the Syrians and the Iranians – there is activity all around us. And there exists a potential for confrontation.”
Meanwhile, the AFP news agency has issued a warning that a still image of the missiles being launched, one of several distributed by Iran, was “apparently digitally altered”.
The photograph, published on the Iranian Revolutionary Guards website and reproduced by media organisations – including the BBC News website – showed four missiles taking off from a desert launch-pad.
But a similar image, issued by the Associated Press, shows one of the missiles still in its launcher after apparently failing to fire.
The BBC News website’s picture editor, Phil Coomes, said: “Having examined the photograph from AFP, it can be seen that parts have been edited, with smoke trails and parts of the foreground being cloned.”
In recent weeks, both Israel and Iran have been testing and showing off their military hardware, each saying that in the event of provocation it is more than capable of defending itself.
The Israeli air force recently carried out a large-scale exercise over the Mediterranean – regarded by many observers as a dress rehearsal should the order be given to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. Israel believes Iran is building nuclear weapons, although Tehran insists its nuclear programme is purely for civilian energy.
Western leaders have been trying to convince Iran to stop enriching uranium, which it has continued doing despite sanctions from the UN and the European Union.
Gates: Missile Test Proves Iran A Threat
AP
July 9, 2008
Defense Secretary Robert Gates says Iran’s missile test bolsters the U.S. argument that Tehran is a threat. He also says it counters Russia’s case against the need for a missile defense system in Europe.
Gates says the U.S. has said for some time that there is a real threat Iran could develop long-range missiles to use against Europe. He says Tehran’s launch of several missiles Wednesday helps make that point.

Barack Obama calls Iran a ’threat’
Press TV
June 27, 2008
US Presidential hopeful Barack Obama calls the Islamic Republic of Iran a ’threat’ during a word association game in a TV interview.
In an interview on Fox Business channel Thursday, Obama played a word association game, responding in rapid-fire to words thrown at him by the program anchor.
When given the word ’Iran’ Obama responded by saying ’threat’. The Illinois Senator also described Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain as ’honorable’.
Earlier this month, Obama called Iran a threat when addressing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
“The danger from Iran is grave, it is real, and my goal will be to eliminate this threat,” he told his audience at the gathering.
Obama also stressed that he would always keep the military option against Iran on the table to defend US security and its ally, Israel.
The presumptive Democratic nominee has said he would do everything in his power to go against Iran if it does not stop threatening Israel and continues uranium enrichment.
But political observers say Barack Obama is simply using harsh rhetoric against the Islamic Republic to secure his Presidency with the support of influential pro-Israel lobbies in the US.
Obama sends Bush letter expressing unwavering support for Israel

“We must press Egypt to devote more resources and effort to stopping the smuggling of weapons into Gaza from the Sinai, where much of Hamas’ weaponry arrives from,” Democratic US presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama said in a letter addressed to US President George W. Bush.
In the letter Obama reiterated many of the positions he presented at AIPAC’s annual conference in Washington at the beginning of the month.
Clarifying his support for Israel Obama wrote, “A fundamental principle of America’s Middle East policy must be our unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security. I believe that is a bipartisan commitment and I will work to continue and advance that consensus. But I am deeply concerned that Israel’s security has been put at greater risk, both because of renewed threats from implacable enemies like Iran, Hizbullah, and Hamas, and because of policy choices by the United States.”

U.S. Says Israel Military Exercise Directed At Iran
IHT
June 19, 2008
Israel carried out a major military exercise earlier this month that American officials say appeared to be a rehearsal for a potential bombing attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Several American officials said the Israeli exercise appeared to be an effort to develop the military’s capacity to carry out long-range strikes and to demonstrate the seriousness with which Israel views Iran’s nuclear program.
More than 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighters participated in the maneuvers, which were carried out over the eastern Mediterranean and over Greece during the first week of June, American officials said.
The exercise also included Israeli helicopters that could be used to rescue downed pilots. The helicopters and refueling tankers flew more than 900 miles, which is about the same distance between Israel and Iran’s uranium enrichment plant at Natanz, American officials said.
Israeli officials declined to discuss the details of the exercise. A spokesman for the Israeli military would say only that the country’s air force “regularly trains for various missions in order to confront and meet the challenges posed by the threats facing Israel.”
But the scope of the Israeli exercise virtually guaranteed that it would be noticed by American and other foreign intelligence agencies. A senior Pentagon official who has been briefed on the exercise, and who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the political delicacy of the matter, said the exercise appeared to serve multiple purposes.
One Israeli goal, the Pentagon official said, was to practice flight tactics, aerial refueling and all other details of a possible strike against Iran’s nuclear installations and its long-range conventional missiles.
A second, the official said, was to send a clear message to the United States and other countries that Israel was prepared to act militarily if diplomatic efforts to stop Iran from producing bomb-grade uranium continued to falter.
“They wanted us to know, they wanted the Europeans to know, and they wanted the Iranians to know,” the Pentagon official said. “There’s a lot of signaling going on at different levels.”
Several American officials said they did not believe that the Israeli government had concluded that it must attack Iran and did not think that such a strike was imminent.
Shaul Mofaz, a former Israeli defense minister who is now a deputy prime minister, warned in a recent interview with the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot that Israel might have no choice but to attack. “If Iran continues with its program for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack,” Mofaz said in the interview published on June 6, the day after the unpublicized exercise ended. “Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable.”
But Mofaz was criticized by other Israeli politicians as seeking to enhance his own standing as questions mount about whether the embattled Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert, can hang on to power.
Israeli officials have told their American counterparts that Mofaz’s statement does not represent official policy. But American officials were also told that Israel had prepared plans for striking nuclear targets in Iran and could carry them out if needed.
Iran has shown signs that it is taking the Israeli warnings seriously, by beefing up its air defenses in recent weeks, including increasing air patrols. In one instance, Iran scrambled F-4 jets to double-check an Iraqi civilian flight from Baghdad to Tehran.
“They are clearly nervous about this and have their air defense on guard,” a Bush administration official said of the Iranians.
Any Israeli attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities would confront a number of challenges. Many American experts say they believe that such an attack could delay but not eliminate Iran’s nuclear program. Much of the program’s infrastructure is buried under earth and concrete and installed in long tunnels or hallways, making precise targeting difficult. There is also concern that not all of the facilities have been detected. To inflict maximum damage, multiple attacks might be necessary, which many analysts say is beyond Israel’s ability at this time.
But waiting also entails risks for the Israelis. Israeli officials have repeatedly expressed fears that Iran will soon master the technology it needs to produce substantial quantities of highly enriched uranium for nuclear weapons.
Iran is also taking steps to better defend its nuclear facilities. Two sets of advance Russian-made radar systems were recently delivered to Iran. The radar will enhance Iran’s ability to detect planes flying at low altitude.
Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, said in February that Iran was close to acquiring Russian-produced SA-20 surface-to-air missiles. American military officials said that the deployment of such systems would hamper Israel’s attack planning, putting pressure on Israel to act before the missiles are fielded.
For both the United States and Israel, Iran’s nuclear program has been a persistent worry. A National Intelligence Estimate that was issued in December by American intelligence agencies asserted that Iran had suspended work on weapons design in late 2003. The report stated that it was unclear if that work had resumed. It also noted that Iran’s work on uranium enrichment and on missiles, two steps that Iran would need to take to field a nuclear weapon, had continued.
In late May, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Iran’s suspected work on nuclear matters was a “matter of serious concern” and that the Iranians owed the agency “substantial explanations.”
Over the past three decades, Israel has carried out two unilateral attacks against suspected nuclear sites in the Middle East. In 1981, Israeli jets conducted a raid against Iraq’s nuclear plant at Osirak after concluding that it was part of Saddam Hussein’s program to develop nuclear weapons. In September, Israeli aircraft bombed a structure in Syria that American officials said housed a nuclear reactor built with the aid of North Korea.
The United States protested the Israeli strike against Iraq in 1981, but its comments in recent months have amounted to an implicit endorsement of the Israeli strike in Syria.
Pentagon officials said that Israel’s air forces usually conducted a major early summer training exercise, often flying over the Mediterranean or training ranges in Turkey where they practice bombing runs and aerial refueling. But the exercise this month involved a larger number of aircraft than had been previously observed, and included a lengthy combat rescue mission.
Much of the planning appears to reflect a commitment by Israel’s military leaders to ensure that its armed forces are adequately equipped and trained, an imperative driven home by the difficulties the Israeli military encountered in its Lebanon operation against Hezbollah.
“They rehearse it, rehearse it and rehearse it, so if they actually have to do it, they’re ready,” the Pentagon official said. “They’re not taking any options off the table.”
Your last chance: Israel’s warning
Sydney Morning Herald
June 19, 2008
ISRAEL’S Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, has warned the radical Islamic movement Hamas that the truce due to take effect today is the last chance to avoid a massive military incursion into the Gaza Strip.
In an exclusive interview with the Herald – his first interview with the Australian media in four years – Mr Olmert said the people of Gaza were “pissed off with Hamas” and sick and tired of the years of violence.
Since Israel withdrew from Gaza three years ago, the 250,000 residents who surround Gaza have been subjected to almost daily rocket attacks from Palestinian militants.
“You think the people of Adelaide would put up with this?” demanded Mr Olmert. “Or the people of Brisbane?
“I think the strategy of Hamas, which does not want to recognise Israel’s right to exist in the first place, and the extremism, and the fanaticism, and the religious dogmatism is the enemy of peace. We are at the end of our tolerance with regard to terror in Gaza.”
Dismissing an escalating corruption investigation which looks certain to force either his resignation or fresh elections by November, Mr Olmert said he was “going nowhere” and did not rule out running again for the leadership of his Kadima party.
So certain is Mr Olmert of his political survival that he has already sent an invitation for Kevin Rudd to visit Israel later this year.
“I don’t know yet personally enough the new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, but I am very impressed with his friendship and his commitment to the well-being of the state of Israel,” Mr Olmert said.
Greeks help Israel prepare for Iran war?
Press TV
June 20, 2008
The Greek Air Force says it partook in an Israeli military exercise which is regarded as a rehearsal for a potential attack on Iran.
Greek sources speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed a New York Times report that Israel’s military maneuvers which were carried out earlier this month off the southern Mediterranean island of Crete, were preparations for a future war with the Islamic Republic.
The Greek source, however, assured that no terrestrial targets were involved as the operation was mainly aimed at personnel training.
According to a New York Times report, more than 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighters participated in the military drills which involved simulated aerial combat, attacks on terrestrial targets, aerial refueling, and search and rescue missions.

Obama: “The Iranian Regime Supports Violent Terrorists”
Both McCain, Obama exaggerating Iran’s nuclear program
McClatchy Newspapers
June 2, 2008
The presumptive Republican nominee for president and the leading contender for the Democratic nomination are exaggerating what’s known about Iran’s nuclear program as they duel over how best to deal with Tehran.
Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Barack Obama, D-Ill., say that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.
The U.S. intelligence community, however, thinks that Iran halted an effort to build a nuclear warhead in mid-2003, and the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency, which is investigating the program, has found no evidence to date of an active Iranian nuclear-weapons project.
The candidates’ comments raise questions about how carefully the two have studied the public record on what’s become a major campaign issue and is one of the most difficult foreign-policy challenges likely to confront the next president.
McCain to AIPAC: I’m committed to making certain Israel maintains military edge
‘When we join in saying never again, that is not a wish, a request or a plea to the enemies of Israel, but a promise that the United States and Israel will honor against any enemy,’ Arizona senator tells pro-Israel lobby.
Y Net News
June 4, 2008
Republican presidential candidate John McCain told a meeting of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) on Monday that the US would not accept a nuclear Iran under his leadership.
“Tehran’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons poses an unacceptable risk, a danger we cannot allow,” the Arizona senator told the annual conference of the pro-Israel lobby group in Washington. “Emboldened by nuclear weapons, Iran would feel free to sponsor terrorist attacks against any perceived enemy. Its flouting of the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty would render that agreement obsolete and could induce Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and others to join a nuclear arms race.
“The world would have to live indefinitely with the possibility that Tehran might pass nuclear materials or weapons to one of its allied terrorist networks. Armed as well with its ballistic missile arsenal, an Iranian nuclear bomb would pose an existential threat to the people of Israel,” he said.
Rice urges europeans to jump on the ‘hate Iran’ bandwagon
Laatan
June 4, 2008
Yesterday it was Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice’s turn to patronise the Israel Lobby conference in Washington when she addressed AIPAC delegates calling for “Our partners in Europe and beyond… to exploit Iran’s vulnerabilities more vigorously and impose greater costs on the regime, economically, financially, politically and diplomatically”.
What went almost unnoticed was the hint that the time for talk was over – assuming there ever was a time that the US and Israel sat down and talked with Iran; if there was then I must have blinked and missed it. “Diplomacy is not a synonym for talking,” Rice told the conference, pushing back against those who are calling for such engagement. “True diplomacy means structuring a set of incentives and disincentives to produce change in behaviour.”
Olmert: Stop Iranian bomb by “all possible means”
Reuters
June 3, 2008
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Tuesday Iran’s nuclear program must be stopped by “all possible means” and Tehran must be made to see it would suffer devastating repercussions if it pursued atomic weapons.
“The Iranian threat must be stopped by all possible means,” Olmert said in a speech during a visit to Washington. “The international community has a duty and responsibility to clarify to Iran, through drastic measures, that the repercussions of their continued pursuit of nuclear weapons will be devastating.”

They’re all here – and they’re all ready to party. The three United States presidential candidates – John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Madam House speaker Nancy Pelosi. Most US senators and virtually half of the US Congress. Vice President Dick Cheney’s wife, Lynne. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Embattled Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. And a host of Jewish and non-Jewish political and academic heavy-hitters among the 7,000 participants.
Such star power wattage, a Washington version of the Oscars, is the stock in trade of AIPAC – the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the crucial player in what is generally known as the Israel lobby and which holds its annual Policy Conference this week in Washington at which most of the heavyweights will deliver lectures.

Israeli forces on Monday killed seven Palestinians and wounded dozens in al-Shijaeya neighborhood, al-Nusaerat refugee camp and Jabalya refugee camp, northern Gaza Strip. Palestinian security sources said that Israeli warplanes fired a missile against a group of Hamas activists in Baghdad street, eastern al-Shijaeya neighborhood, killing one and wounding others, some critically.
Medics affirmed to WAFA that Ramzi Khwayter was killed. His dead body was shattered into pieces, reports said. Shortly later, Israeli warplanes targeted another group of activists at al-Sika street in the neighbourhood, killing three.
Also in the Gaza Strip, another military raid was launched in al-Tufah neighborhood, killing two Palestinians and wounding two others, one critically. In al-Nusaerat refugee camp, central Gaza Strip, an Israeli raid was launched killing a man and wounding three others, one critically.
In Jabalya refugee camp, after Israeli ground forces withdrew from the area, rescue teams managed to get three dead bodies from under the wreckage. Later, medics declared that a man died of wounds he sustained during the recent Israeli assault against Jabalya refugee camp.
Thus, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MOH) the death toll following the Israeli assault against Gaza Strip since last Wednesday has mounted to 118, a third of which are children while more than 350 were wounded.
In the West Bank, Israeli occupation troops on Monday shot dead a Palestinian teenager north of Ramallah during a demonstration protesting the killings in the Gaza Strip. Local sources said that students of the Mazra Al-Gharbia village organized a protest rally that headed towards a nearby settlement but were met with live bullets by soldiers and guards of that settlement.
The demonstrators threw stones at the soldiers and the Israelis retaliated by firing bullets that hit and killed Mohammed Saleh Shreiteh, 18.
Israel’s “Bigger Holocaust” Threat Against the Palestinians
Znet
March 2, 2008
Yesterday, Friday, 29 February 2008, Israel’s deputy defense minister Matan Vilnai threatened Palestinians in Gaza with a “holocaust,” telling the Israeli Army Radio: “The more Qassam fire intensifies and the rockets reach a longer range, [the Palestinians] will bring upon themselves a bigger holocaust because we will use all our might to defend ourselves.” [1] This date will go down in history as the beginning of a new phase in the colonial conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, whereby a senior Israeli leader, a “leftist” for that matter, has publicly revealed the genocidal plans Israel is considering to implement against Palestinians under its military occupation, if they do not cease to resist its dictates. It will also mark the first time since World War II that any state has relentlessly — and on live TV — terrorized a civilian population with acts of slow, or low-intensity, genocide, with one of its senior government officials overtly inciting to a full-blown “Holocaust,” while the world stood by, watching in utter apathy, or in glee, as in the case of leading western leaders.
Israeli Airstrike in Gaza Destroys Medical Relief Head Office, Kills Baby
Palestine Monitor
February 28, 2008
An Israeli airstrike aimed at the ministry of interior building in Gaza City also destroyed the nearby Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) head office in Gaza and killed a 5-month-old baby in a residential building in the same area.
The PMRS head office was housing the main PMRS clinic in the Gaza Strip, the main pharmacy, an ambulance, a loan centre for equipment for handicapped people and all the administrative offices. The ambulance, all the medicine and most of the equipment have been destroyed. The building itself is badly damaged and cannot be used again without extensive repairs.
The attack also hit a nearby residential building, killing Mohammad Nasser Al-Borey, 5 months, in his family home.
Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP, president of PMRS, declared “the collective punishment of Palestinians in Gaza has reached unbearable levels. This latest attack destroyed a key part of the already badly hit Gazan health system. Israel has lost all sense of humanity, and the silence of the international community enables its murderous escalation against a people imprisoned in a giant jail. These relentless violations of international law must be put to an end. It is a war crime under the Geneva Convention to target medical personnel. Regional organisations and individual States have to take actions to protect the Palestinian people from Israel. This must stop, now”.
Dr. Abdel Hadi Abu Khussa, director of PMRS in the Gaza Strip, declared that “the destruction of the main clinic, pharmacy, office and one ambulance are a terrible blow to PMRS activities and will increase the suffering of the people of Gaza. We are victims of Israeli collective punishment”.

Bush’s State of the Union: Mandate for Iran Attack
Kurt Nimmo
Truth News
January 29, 2008
If it is true Bush — or rather the neocons, using the sock puppet Bush — plan to attack Iran before the decider-commander leaves office in a little less than a year, then the State of Union address seems to send up a couple red flags in that direction.
Consider the following:
When we met last year, militia extremists — some armed and trained by Iran — were wreaking havoc in large areas of Iraq.
Of course, there is no evidence of this, same as there was no evidence Saddam and Osama hung out together and plotted to attack the United States, as the neocons insisted prior to the invasion and occupation of Iraq. It was all bull feathers, same as this claim is a calculated lie.
As should be expected with this clan of traitors and warmongers, the lies must go on, or maybe that should be “catapulted”:
Iran is funding and training militia groups in Iraq, supporting Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, and backing Hamas’s efforts to undermine peace in the Holy Land. Tehran is also developing ballistic missiles of increasing range and continues to develop its capability to enrich uranium, which could be used to create a nuclear weapon.
Again, there is a complete paucity of evidence Iran is “training militia groups in Iraq,” a fact underscored by both Def. Sec Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace last year.
Even Anthony Cordesman, a former director of Intelligence Assessment in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, believes the neocons are full of it. “I’m not sure they understand how little credibility these statements have,” Cordesman told USA Today. “The great risk is that what may be a real issue will not be seen as real outside the United States.” Added USA Today: “Such claims, however, are being met with denials from Iran and skepticism at home. Faulty U.S. intelligence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, which Bush used to justify in part the 2003 invasion of Iraq, has eroded much of the administration’s credibility.”
Not that it matters in the United States, where the population, tuned in and mesmerized by Faux News and the like, buy whatever transparent tripe the neocons trot out as evidence there are big bad terrorists on the hunt, hungry to slaughter grade school girls.
Since Hamas was duly elected by the Palestinian people, much to the chagrin of Israel and the United States, we can only assume Bush the neocon sock puppet is declaring the Palestinians as a whole are undermining “peace in the Holy Land” from inside their open-air prison — hemmed in by a massive “security fence,” i.e., prison wall, and surrounded by thousands of troops and a vast array of military hardware provided by the U.S. — in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Maybe this collective plot to undermine peace is why Israel has slaughtered and tortured Palestinians for more than fifty years.
Bush tells you Iran is developing “ballistic missiles,” but this is a canard. As it now stands, Iran’s missiles can reach Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Syria, that is to say neighboring states, none posing a threat to the regime in Tehran. It is estimated, if Iran acquires missiles from North Korea, it will be able to extend this range significantly, including Israel (see this map, provided by the Federation of American Scientists).
However, even with the Taepo Dong 2 missile, Iran will not be able to threaten the United States. In 2005, according to the authoritative Jane’s, Iran “acquired medium/ intermediate-range ballistic missiles” from North Korea with a range of approximately 2,500 kilometers.
In 2006, Iran’s army chief General Rahim Safavi declared on Iranian television that the “first and main goal” of a test of the Shahab-2 and Shahab-3 was “to demonstrate power and national determination to defend the country against any possible threat.” Of course, for Israel and the Bush neocons, this means Iran will nuke Israel, never mind this would be suicidal mental illness manifest.
In August, the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna reported that “while Iran continues to enrich uranium in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions, its fuel enrichment plant has produced ‘well below the expected quantity for a facility of this design.’ The quality of the uranium also was lower than expected, the IAEA said.” The report “praised Iran for taking ‘a significant step forward’ by agreeing to a new work plan and timelines for resolving numerous questions about the history of its nuclear program. Separately, U.N. officials said that Iran had slowed construction of a new plutonium-fuel reactor in Arak.”
It should be noted that the Security Council resolution — UNSC Resolution 1696 — contradicts the Non-Proliferation Treaty, allowing signatories to enrich uranium. The IAEA’s El-Baradei confirmed in Paragraph 52 of his November, 2003 report that “to date, there is no evidence that the previously undeclared nuclear material and activities referred to [in the report] were related to a nuclear weapons program.” Moreover, after extensive inspections, El-Baradei wrote Paragraph 112 of his November 2004 report that “all the declared nuclear material in Iran has been accounted for, and therefore such material is not diverted to prohibited activities” (see Iran Affairs, January 22, 2008).
Michael Spies of the Lawyer’s Committee on Nuclear Policy (see previous link) notes:
The conclusion that no diversion has occurred certifies that the state in question is in compliance with its undertaking, under its safeguards agreement and Article III of the NPT, to not divert material to non-peaceful purposes. In the case of Iran, the IAEA was able to conclude in its November 2004 report that that all declared nuclear materials had been accounted for and therefore none had been diverted to military purposes. The IAEA reached this same conclusion in September 2005.
And yet Israel, stockpiling around 200 nuclear weapons, has not signed the NPT. Israel’s nuclear program is truly secret although, thanks to Mordechai Vanunu, we have an idea of its dimension. Kenneth S. Brower has estimated Israel has as many as 400 nuclear weapons, that is to say 400 more than Iran has. In 2004, Louis René Beres, a professor of Political Science at Purdue University and a one-time advisor for the now comatose Ariel Sharon, suggested Israel, under the Samson Option, use its nukes to “support conventional preemptions” against its Arab neighbors. Israel has a sordid history of launching numerous “conventional preemptions” against these neighbors, a fact revealed in a study of former Israeli PM Moshe Sharett’s personal diary by Livia Rokach (see Israel’s Sacred Terrorism, AAUG Press, Third Edition, 1986).
But never mind. Bush and the perfidious neocons are way behind schedule and they realize even flimsily crafted lies work well enough on millions of Americans who, like well-trained monkeys, jump when they are told there’s a turbaned Muslim lighting a fire under their posteriors.
Our message to the people of Iran is clear: We have no quarrel with you. We respect your traditions and your history. We look forward to the day when you have your freedom.
Sure they do, sort of like they respected the traditions of the Iraqi people by blowing them away with depleted uranium. So compassionate are the neocons, as I write this millions of Iraqis live under the internationally accepted standard of living of less than a dollar a day, a situation that did not exist until Bush Senior, Clinton, and Bush the Lesser imposed medieval sanctions, resulting in the premeditated murder of more than 500,000 Iraqi children.
As Bush reiterated in his neocon manufactured speech, Iran is next on the target list and should expect the same treatment from Bush’s Arab and Muslim hating handlers.
Considering such, if I lived in Iran I’d want a few “ballistic missiles” as well, and the sooner the better to stave off Armageddon delivered by way of countless cruise missiles, bunker busters, depleted uranium, and possibly even “min-nukes.”

Gazans Knock Down Border Flee To Egypt
AP
January 23, 2008
Palestinian exodus into the Egyptian side of the Rafah
Tens of thousands of Palestinians on foot and on donkey carts poured into Egypt from Gaza Wednesday after masked gunmen used land mines to blast down a seven-mile barrier dividing the border town of Rafah.
The border breach was a dramatic protest against the closure of the impoverished Palestinian territory imposed last week by Israel.
Jubilant men and women crossed unhindered by border controls over the toppled corrugated metal along sections of the barrier, carrying goats, chickens and crates of Coca-Cola. Some brought back televisions, car tires and cigarettes and one man even bought a motorcycle. Vendors sold soft drinks and baked goods to the crowds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TocjkugWEEc
They were stocking up on goods made scarce by the Israeli blockade and within hours, shops on the Egyptian side of Rafah had run out of stock. The border fence had divided the Rafah into two halves, one on the Egyptian side and one in southern Gazan.
Ibrahim Abu Taha, 45, a Palestinian father of seven, was in the Egyptian section of Rafah with his two brothers and $185 in his pocket.
“We want to buy food, we want to buy rice and sugar, milk and wheat and some cheese,” Abu Taha said, adding that he would also buy cheap Egyptian cigarettes.
Abu Taha said he could get the basic foods in Gaza, but at three times the cost.
Police from the militant Islamic group Hamas, which controls Gaza, directed the traffic. Egyptian border guards took no action, imposing no border controls for those who crossed.
“Freedom is good. We need no border after today,” said unemployed 29-year-old Mohammed Abu Ghazal.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak told reporters in Cairo his border guards originally had forced back the Gazans on Tuesday.
“But today a great number of them came back because the Palestinians in Gaza are starving due to the Israeli siege,” he said.
No starvation has been reported in Gaza. But many of the 1.5 million residents have faced critical shortages of electricity, fuel and other supplies over months because Gaza has been virtually sealed since Hamas seized control of the territory by force in June.
“I told them to let them come in and eat and buy food and then return them later as long as they were not carrying weapons,” Mubarak said.

Day after Gaza blackout, PM says ‘Gazans can walk’
Haaretz
January 21, 2008
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert pledged Monday that Israel would not allow the Gaza Strip to slide into a humanitarian crisis in the wake of the decision to halt fuel supplies over ongoing rocket fire on the Negev, but later said that gas-deprived Gaza residents “can walk.”
“As far as I’m concerned, all the residents of Gaza can walk and have no fuel for their cars, because they have a murderous terrorist regime that doesn’t allow people in the south of Israel to live in peace,” the prime minister said in broadcast remarks.
Also Monday, a Qassam rocket struck the western Negev. Southern Israel absorbed more than a hundred rockets fired from Gaza last week, but the weekend marked a significant drop in Qassam attacks with only five fired on Sunday.
Olmert made the pledge to prevent a humanitarian crisis in separate talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen. Mubarak called Olmert on Monday to express his concern over the deteriorating situation in Gaza.
“We will not allow a humanitarian crisis in the Strip,” Olmert told both leaders.
“We will provide the population with everything needed to prevent a crisis, but we will not supply luxuries that would make life more comfortable,” he added.
Olmert also told Verhagen that 75 percent of children in the Negev suffer from anxiety as a result of the daily rocket attacks.
“Israel does not want to use the same means and shoot without aim,” he said. “We are trying to attack terrorists, but we also show the population that it cannot shed itself of responsibility for the situation. We won’t allow the Palestinians to fire on us and destroy life in Sderot, while in Gaza life is going on as usual.”
European collusion in Israel’s slow genocide
The Electronic Antifada
January 21, 2008
The European Union, Israel’s largest trade partner in the world, is watching by as Israel tightens its barbaric siege on Gaza, collectively punishing 1.5 million Palestinian civilians, condemning them to devastation, and visiting imminent death upon hundreds of kidney dialysis and heart patients, prematurely born babies, and all others dependent on electric power for their very survival.
By freezing fuel and electric power supplies to Gaza, Israel, the occupying power, is essentially guaranteeing that “clean” water — only by name, as Gaza’s water is perhaps the most polluted in the whole region, after decades of Israeli theft and abuse — will not be pumped out and properly distributed to homes and institutions; hospitals will not be able to function adequately, leading to the eventual death of many, particularly the most vulnerable; whatever factories that are still working despite the siege will now be forced to close, pushing the already extremely high unemployment rate even higher; sewage treatment will come to a halt, further polluting Gaza’s precious little water supply; academic institutions and schools will not be able to provide their usual services; and the lives of all civilians will be severely disrupted, if not irreversibly damaged. And Europe is apathetically watching.
Princeton academic Richard Falk considered Israel’s siege a “prelude to genocide,” even before this latest crime of altogether cutting off energy supplies. Now, Israel’s crimes in Gaza can accurately be categorized as acts of genocide, albeit slow. According to Article II of the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the term is defined as:
“[A]ny of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; …”
Clearly, Israel’s hermetic siege of Gaza, designed to kill, cause serious bodily and mental harm, and deliberately inflict conditions of life calculated to bring about partial and gradual physical destruction, qualifies as an act of genocide, if not all-out genocide yet. And the EU is suspiciously silent.

Israeli Defense Minister: “In Gaza, what’s important is to kill”… “even if it’s a three-year old child.”

Israeli Defense Minister: “In Gaza, what’s important is to kill”… “even if it’s a three-year old child.”
As the Israeli government continues to hint that it will be launching a full-scale invasion of Gaza in the coming days, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israeli Army Radio, “For the moment, what’s important is to kill all those who want to fire Qassam [shells] against Israel.”
He recently implemented a policy whereby Israeli soldiers are ordered to shoot any known Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip, regardless of whether there were homemade shells (so-called ‘Qassams’) fired from that location or not.
“The Israeli Army will continue the extremely effective operations of its special forces in the Gaza Strip,” he said. “Each day that passes brings us closer to a vigorous military operation.”
But the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is apparently hesitant to launch such and invasion so soon after a peace meeting with the Palestinian Authority. He is afraid it will make Israel look like they don’t want peace. In fact, Israel has killed fifteen Palestinians since the one-day peace meeting last week, and conducted a dozen incursions into the West Bank.
Israel already has ‘kill zones’ in the Gaza Strip – areas where soldiers are ordered to ‘shoot anything that moves, even if its a three-year old child.’ The new directive by Barak expands that ‘kill zone’ to any known Hamas positions. These could be extremely numerous, given that Hamas has control of the government in Gaza (after being democratically elected last year), and the majority of Palestinians in Gaza support the party.

Ex-CIA Robert Baer Questions Use of Torture, Official 9/11 Story

From last night’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann:
(excuse the poor quality)
Robert Baer spent 20 years working for the CIA. He was a field officer in the Middle East and has seen it all. He says torture is useless – it leads to false confessions. And he doesn’t believe the official story about 9/11. If CIA agents are questioning 9/11, then maybe you should be too. Do you even know the story of Building 7? What about the military drills going on that day – can you name them? Don’t bother looking in the 9/11 Commission Report for this information. They conveniently left out all the many suspicious details that point to 9/11 being an inside job.
