’Cut his mike,’ producer suggests

The Keating Five scandal, and John McCain’s role in it, has received relatively little mention in presidential campaign coverage, and at least one Fox News host seems dedicated to keeping it that way.

Appearing Thursday morning on Fox & Friends, radio host Mike Papantonio tried to remind viewers about McCain’s intervention with federal regulators on behalf of real estate mogul Charles Keating, who was trying to avoid regulations of a savings and loan he owned during the S&L crisis of the 1980s.

F&F’s Steve Doocy told Papantonio to “pipe down,” called him “rude” and demanded he “cut it out.” A show producer could be overheard saying “cut his mike.”

As Papantonio tries one last time to explain the details of the Keating Five scandal, Doocy again cuts him off.

“This is not the History Channel,” he says.

Papantonio’s apparent crime was interrupting fellow guest Michael Reagan, the conservative radio host, who was arguing that it would be unfair to judge McCain based on his actions 20 years ago.

“It has everything to do with what’s happening today,” Papantonio said before being told to pipe down.

Regardless of whether Papantonio was being rude, preserving an orderly debate certainly could not have been Doocy’s goal in silencing the guest. Not two minutes before his admonition that Papantonio was “being rude,” Doocy repeatedly interrupted his guest to deliver talking points that might as well have been written by the McCain campaign.

At least three times Doocy interrupted Papantonio as he argued that McCain’s political gambit to “suspend” his campaign and delay Friday’s debate was more a response to his flagging poll numbers than an attempt to fix the economic crisis. Doocy wasn’t buying it.

“If Barack Obama wants to do so much for the economy, why doesn’t he go to his day job and work in the US senate?” he asked Reagan, cutting off Papantonio’s argument.

More dead Americans on U.S. soil would be “big advantage” says top strategist

Top McCain strategist Charlie Black tells Fortune Magazine that a terrorist attack on U.S. soil would aid the Arizona Senator to overturn Barack Obama’s lead and be a “big advantage” in helping him become President.

In an article entitled The evolution of John McCain, Black notes that the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December “helped” the McCain campaign because it gave the Senator an opportunity to grandstand as a tough would-be Commander-in-Chief.

Black then brazenly points out that another 9/11-style attack would give the McCain campaign the boost it needs to claw back Barack Obama’s estimated 7 per cent lead over the Senator.

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an “unfortunate event,” says Black. “But his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who’s ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us.” As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. “Certainly it would be a big advantage to him,” says Black.

McCain Fundraiser Says Rape Should Be Enjoyed

CNN
June 14, 2008

The Democratic National Committee on Saturday called for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to return money raised for his campaign by controversial Texas Republican Clayton “Claytie” Williams Jr.

ABC News reported Friday night that the McCain campaign canceled a Monday fundraiser at Williams’ home after the campaign was reminded of a comment he made that drew fire when he ran unsuccessfully for Texas governor in 1990 against the late Ann Richards.

A reporter overheard Williams comparing rape to weather: “As long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”

The McCain campaign has not said what it will do with money Williams has already raised for the campaign. Williams told the Midland Reporter-Telegram in Texas that he has raised more than $300,000 for the campaign.

McCain Sex Scandal Blonde Missing — Day 12

McCain Sex Scandal Blonde Missing — Day 12

Huffington Post
March 3, 2008

Jimmy Breslin says there are only two headlines that sell newspapers: WAR and BIG GUY DIES. (Here at Huffington, the two headlines are OBAMA and SOMEONE’S NOT PAYING ENOUGH ATTENTION TO OBAMA.) In cable news, the only stories anyone cares about involve missing white women, the blonder the better.

Elizabeth Smart and Chandra Levy, Laci Peterson and JonBenet Ramsey, Madeline McCann and Jessica Lynch, the Runaway Bride and the remains of Anna Nicole Smith. Those stories were made for cable. Sure, it’s fun to watch a casino implode, the first hundred times, but it doesn’t have the same urgent familiarity; the same prurient arc of tension a relief, like a cross between a nipple slip and a mining disaster. There’s something about a missing white women that just works for 24-hour news. Like shipwrecks in Shakespeare, or the way you can’t write a truly awful folk song without mentioning smoking.

Is it news that we need? Of course not. I’m sure Natalee Holloway was a perfectly nice person, but unless there are particles of her in my drinking water, I don’t need to know she’s still gone.

As unsettling as the stories are, we can take a kind of comfort in the soothing inexorability of the coverage. The message is that the medium cares. If a woman goes missing — and she’s not black or poor — CNN, Fox and MSNBC will cover it.

So what happened to the missing blonde woman in John McCain’s lobbying scandal?

It’s been twelve days.

Where on Earth is Vicki Iseman?

We’ve heard from John McCain:

“I’m very disappointed in the New York Times…”

And from Cindy McCain:

“I’m very, very disappointed in The New York Times…”

But what about Vicki Iseman? Isn’t she disappointed?

Not even in Thomas Friedman?

Until we hear her speak, or hear she’s been identified from dental records, how can we ever have closure?

It’s not just that she’s vanished, although that should be enough, considering her hair color. And it’s not just that she’s been tied to a U.S. senator with a very real chance of achieving America’s highest office and then dying in it. It’s that there are still only three pictures of her on Google.

She’s been a lobbyist for eighteen years, but she’s only been photographed three times. And one of those times was with President Bush. Unless she folds up neatly and fits inside Jack Abramoff’s hat, it doesn’t make sense.

Where’s Vicki Iseman and where’s the cable news coverage of her disappearance?

Email Nancy Grace at this address.

And demand to know.
