McCain flip flops on ’strong’ economy comment

McCain on U.S. economy: from ‘strong’ to ‘total crisis’ in 36 hours

Herald Tribune

September 17, 2008

Early this week, as the American financial system absorbed one of its biggest shocks in generations, Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were “strong.”

Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers, whom he described as the backbone of the economy, were productive and resilient.

By Tuesday he was calling the economic situation “a total crisis” and denouncing “greed” on Wall Street and in Washington. Meantime, he moved from adamant opposition to resigned acceptance of the big government bailouts.

Pat Robertson: Israel Should Strike Iran Before 2008 Election

Pat Robertson: Israel Should Strike Iran Before 2008 Election

Think Progress
July 23, 2008

http://youtube.com/watch?v=La1F68IWA4o

On yesterday’s edition of The 700 Club, Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson sharply criticized the “moderate tone” the Bush administration has allegedly taken toward Iran and its nuclear weapons program. Robertson advocated that Israel look out for the “survival of its nation” and “make some kind of a strike” against Iranian nuclear facilities. He also predicted that it will likely happen before the 2008 elections:

But nevertheless, I think we can look in the next few months for Israel to make a strike — possibly before the next election — because I think George Bush — to use the term an “amber light” — he’s given the amber, the yellow light, saying, “Caution, but go ahead.”

Robertson’s predictions often turn out to be wrong. In 2004, Robertson claimed that the Lord told him it would “be like a blowout” re-election for President Bush. (Bush ended up receiving just 51 percent of the vote.) In 2006, he incorrectly predicted that “the outcome of the war and the success of the economy will leave the Republicans in charge.”

He does, however, have an inside track into the Bush administration. Last year, Robertson’s Regent University estimated that one in six of its graduates were employed in government work. Approximately 150 served in the Bush administration.

Today, top McCain surrogate Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) is also talking to controversial Pastor John Hagee’s organization. In 2006, Hagee declared:

The United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West… a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ.

Other members of the right wing have also been unifying around the idea of striking Iran before Bush leaves. Both John Bolton and Bill Kristol have made the same argument.

Kagan: ‘The only way’ to ‘force’ Iran to halt its nuclear program is an ‘attack.’

Think Progress
July 23, 2008

Appearing on MSNBC this afternoon, Iraq surge architect Fred Kagan criticized direct talks with Iran and made his case for attacking Iran, claiming it is the only means to “force” the country to halt its nuclear program:

Well, there’s nothing we can do short of an attack to force Iran to give up its nuclear program. … At the end of the day, the only way that you can make for sure that [a nuclear arm’s race] doesn’t happen is with an attack. There are a variety of things you can do short of an attack and hope that they will work, but hope is not a method here.

Top Israeli official: If nuclear talks fail, Bush will order Iran attack between November and January

DEBKAfile
July 19, 2008

This assessment was reported by Israeli national radio Saturday overnight quoting a high-placed “security-political” official.

The source predicted that President George W. Bush would order Iran attacked between the November 4 presidential election and his exit from the White House in January. The quote was aired shortly after the six-power talks with Iran in Geneva – with US official participation for the first time – failed, and just before Israel chief of staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi set out for Washington. He is to spend a week there as guest of Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

DEBKAfile’s political sources describe the disclosure as a step aimed at slowing down the collapse of Israel’s stated policy of relying on international diplomatic pressure to thwart Iran’s acquisition of nuclear arms. It is expected to raise a furious outcry from the powers spearheading the diplomatic effort and prompt extreme reactions from Tehran.

McCain says only World War III would justify draft

McCain says only World War III would justify draft

Reuters
June 25, 2008

Only World War III would prompt Republican presidential candidate John McCain to bring back the military draft, McCain said on Tuesday.

Many Americans are fearful the U.S. government will be forced to reinstitute the draft given the prolonged Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Asked about that possibility by a potential voter in Florida during a telephone “town hall meeting,” McCain said: “I don’t know what would make a draft happen unless we were in an all-out World War III.”

The United States ended its last military draft in 1973 in the waning years of the Vietnam war, moving to an all-volunteer military force.

McCain, a Vietnam veteran, said the draft during that conflict weighed most heavily on lower-income Americans, and that this should not be repeated.

“I do not believe the draft is even practicable or desirable,” McCain said.

Strike on Iran could turn Mideast into fireball, official says

Strike on Iran could turn Mideast into fireball, official says

AP
June 21, 2008

The U.N. nuclear watchdog chief warned in comments aired Saturday that any military strike on Iran could turn the Mideast to a “ball of fire” and lead Iran to a more aggressive stance on its controversial nuclear program.

Mohamed ElBaradei made the remarks in an interview aired on Saturday by Al Arabiya TV. The interview comes a day after reports emerged that Israel conducted an large-scale military exercise that the United States believes is in part a message to Iran that Israel has the capability to attack its nuclear program.

“In my opinion, a military strike will be the worst. … It will turn the Middle East to a ball of fire,” ElBaradei said on Al-Arabiya television. It also could prompt Iran to press even harder to seek a nuclear program and force him to resign, he said.

Iran also criticized the Israeli exercises Saturday. The official IRNA news agency quoted a government spokesman as saying the exercises demonstrate that Israel “jeopardizes global peace and security.”

Israel sent warplanes and other aircraft on a major exercise in the eastern Mediterranean this month, U.S. military officials said Friday.

Israel’s military refused to confirm or deny that the maneuvers were practice for a strike in Iran, saying only that it regularly trains for various missions to counter threats to the country.

But the exercise the first week of June may have been meant as a show of force as well as a practice on skills needed to execute a long-range strike mission, one U.S. official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record on the matter.

Iran says Israel not capable of threatening it

Reuters
June 23, 2008

Iran said on Monday Israel could not threaten it, a few days after a U.S. newspaper reported that Israel’s air force had apparently rehearsed a potential bombing raid of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Iran and Israel have engaged in a sharp exchange of words this month over suspicions Tehran is looking to develop nuclear weapons, helping to push global oil prices higher.

“They do not have the capacity to threaten the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini told a news conference.

He was asked about a New York Times report on Friday that quoted U.S. officials as saying Israeli jets conducted a long-range Mediterranean exercise this month that appeared to be a practice for a mission against Iran.

“They (Israel) have a number of domestic crises and they want to extrapolate it to cover others. Sometimes they come up with these empty slogans,” Hosseini said in comments translated by Iran’s English-language Press TV satellite station.

Iran’s defense minister on Sunday accused Israel of “psychological warfare”, but said Tehran would give a “devastating” response to any attack.

On Friday, the U.N. nuclear watchdog chief, Mohamed ElBaradei, said a military strike on Iran would turn the Middle East into a fireball and prompt Tehran to launch a crash course to build nuclear weapons.

Bolton: Israel Will Attack Iran After U.S. Election But Before Inauguration, Arab States Will Be ‘Delighted’
Bolton predicts “likely period” for Israel strike on Iran is between November 4, 2008 and January 20, 2009

Think Progress
June 22, 2008

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ditVZ-q47Fw

This morning on Fox News, former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton continued his drumbeat for war against Iran. Adopting Bill Kristol’s argument, Bolton suggested that an attack on Iran depends on who Americans elect as the next President:

I think if they [Israel] are to do anything, the most likely period is after our elections and before the inauguration of the next President. I don’t think they will do anything before our election because they don’t want to affect it. And they’d have to make a judgment whether to go during the remainder of President Bush’s term in office or wait for his successor.

Bolton gamed out the fallout from an attack on Iran. He claimed that Iran’s options to retaliate after being attacked are actually “less broad than people think.” He suggested that Iran would not want to escalate a conflict because 1) it still needs to export oil, 2) it would worry about “an even greater response” from Israel, 3) and it would worry about the U.S.’s response.

Bolton then concluded that Arab states would be excited if the U.S. or Israel attacked Iran:

I don’t think you’d hear the Arab states say this publicly, but they would be delighted if the United States or Israel destroyed the Iranian nuclear weapons capability.

Bolton: Israel Would Be “Delighted” If U.S. Strikes Iranian Training Camps

In a Fox News interview this afternoon, former UN Ambassador John Bolton discussed his desire to bomb camps inside Iran that are reportedly training and arming Shiite insurgents who fight in Iraq. Fox host Martha McCallum asked, “Can you imagine a scenario where President Bush would do that before the end of his term?” Bolton responded, “I think so, definitely.” He added later, “This is entirely responsible on our part.”

Asked by McCallum whether Israel would be supportive of the strikes given the possibility of Iranian retaliation, Bolton responded, “I think they’d be delighted.”

Neocon “Scholars” Target Iran’s Oil Infrastructure

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars
June 20, 2008

The L.A. Times’ Babylon & Beyond blog reports on “a serious recommendation made by two neoconservatives in case sanctions fail to persuade Iran to abandon its enrichment of uranium, a process that can be used to make nuclear weapons or fuel for peaceful energy production.” Patrick Clawson and Michael Eisenstadt, described as two “scholars” working for the Washington Institute for Near East Studies, have suggested taking out Iran’s oil infrastructure.

Because the ultimate goal of prevention is to influence Tehran to change course, effective strikes against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure may play an important role in affecting Iran’s decision calculus. Strikes that flatten its nuclear infrastructure could have a demoralizing effect, and could influence Tehran’s assessment of the cost of rebuilding. But the most effective strikes may not necessarily be against nuclear facilities. Iran is extraordinarily vulnerable to attacks on its oil export infrastructure…. The political shock of losing the oil income could cause Iran to rethink its nuclear stance — in ways that attacks on its nuclear infrastructure might not.

Or it may move Iran’s “decision calculus” in a different direction — deadly missile salvos against U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and smoldering oil tankers clogging up passage of the Persian Gulf. If these two criminal minds have their way, you will be paying $10 a gallon or more at the pump for gasoline. No problem for the WINEP “scholars,” who write:

To be sure, in a tight world oil market, attacking Iran’s oil infrastructure carries an obvious risk of causing world oil prices to soar and hurting consumers in the United States and other oil-importing countries…. If the choice is between higher oil prices and a Middle East with several nuclear powers, higher oil prices and reduced economic growth are not clearly the greater evil.

Talk about hubris. But then neocons are more than comfortable with imposing economic hardship on you, considered a lowly commoner and easily distracted chump by the neocons and their globalist associates. It should be remembered that the neocons consider themselves “philosopher-kings,” a self-appointed elite, and advocate benevolent dictatorship – a process well underway — although it remains to be seen how benevolent it would be to freeze to death thousands of people unable to heat their homes or starve them to death because the cannot afford to drive to work.

Both McCain, Obama exaggerating Iran’s nuclear program

McClatchy Newspapers
June 2, 2008

The presumptive Republican nominee for president and the leading contender for the Democratic nomination are exaggerating what’s known about Iran’s nuclear program as they duel over how best to deal with Tehran.

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Barack Obama, D-Ill., say that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

The U.S. intelligence community, however, thinks that Iran halted an effort to build a nuclear warhead in mid-2003, and the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency, which is investigating the program, has found no evidence to date of an active Iranian nuclear-weapons project.

The candidates’ comments raise questions about how carefully the two have studied the public record on what’s become a major campaign issue and is one of the most difficult foreign-policy challenges likely to confront the next president.

McCain to AIPAC: I’m committed to making certain Israel maintains military edge

‘When we join in saying never again, that is not a wish, a request or a plea to the enemies of Israel, but a promise that the United States and Israel will honor against any enemy,’ Arizona senator tells pro-Israel lobby.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain told a meeting of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) on Monday that the US would not accept a nuclear Iran under his leadership.

“Tehran’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons poses an unacceptable risk, a danger we cannot allow,” the Arizona senator told the annual conference of the pro-Israel lobby group in Washington. “Emboldened by nuclear weapons, Iran would feel free to sponsor terrorist attacks against any perceived enemy. Its flouting of the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty would render that agreement obsolete and could induce Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and others to join a nuclear arms race.

“The world would have to live indefinitely with the possibility that Tehran might pass nuclear materials or weapons to one of its allied terrorist networks. Armed as well with its ballistic missile arsenal, an Iranian nuclear bomb would pose an existential threat to the people of Israel,” he said.

Rice urges europeans to jump on the ‘hate Iran’ bandwagon

Yesterday it was Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice’s turn to patronise the Israel Lobby conference in Washington when she addressed AIPAC delegates calling for “Our partners in Europe and beyond… to exploit Iran’s vulnerabilities more vigorously and impose greater costs on the regime, economically, financially, politically and diplomatically”.

What went almost unnoticed was the hint that the time for talk was over – assuming there ever was a time that the US and Israel sat down and talked with Iran; if there was then I must have blinked and missed it. “Diplomacy is not a synonym for talking,” Rice told the conference, pushing back against those who are calling for such engagement. “True diplomacy means structuring a set of incentives and disincentives to produce change in behaviour.”

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Tuesday Iran’s nuclear program must be stopped by “all possible means” and Tehran must be made to see it would suffer devastating repercussions if it pursued atomic weapons.

“The Iranian threat must be stopped by all possible means,” Olmert said in a speech during a visit to Washington. “The international community has a duty and responsibility to clarify to Iran, through drastic measures, that the repercussions of their continued pursuit of nuclear weapons will be devastating.”

They’re all here – and they’re all ready to party. The three United States presidential candidates – John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Madam House speaker Nancy Pelosi. Such star power wattage, a Washington version of the Oscars, is the stock in trade of AIPAC – the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the crucial player in what is generally known as the Israel lobby and which holds its annual Policy Conference this week in Washington at which most of the heavyweights will deliver lectures.

NY Times: McCain had possible relations to Female Lobbyist

NY Times: McCain had possible relations to Female Lobbyist

NY Times

February 21, 2008

Fbiiraqisbein_mn

Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, in his offices and aboard a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s clients, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity.

It had been just a decade since an official favor for a friend with regulatory problems had nearly ended McCain’s political career by ensnaring him in the Keating Five scandal. In the years that followed, he reinvented himself as the scourge of special interests, a crusader for stricter ethics and campaign finance rules, a man of honor chastened by a brush with shame.

But the concerns about McCain’s relationship with Iseman underscored an enduring paradox of his post-Keating career. Even as he has vowed to hold himself to the highest ethical standards, his confidence in his own integrity has sometimes seemed to blind him to potentially embarrassing conflicts of interest.

‘Disappointed’ in NY Times piece; ‘It’s not true’

Fbiiraqisbein_mn

Republican presidential candidate John McCain faced the explosion of a long-ticking timebomb Thursday morning when the New York Times revealed allegations of his questionable conduct with a woman who lobbied for the telecommunications industry.

In a 9 a.m. press conference, McCain denied the Times report, saying he was disappointed with the paper of record’s handling of the story.

“I’m very disappointed in The New York Times piece,” McCain said. “It’s not true.”

The Arizona Senator flatly denied that he had a romantic relationship with the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, and he said campaign aides never warned him about speculation the two were having an affair nor intervened to keep her from campaign events.

While he said he was unaware whether aides discussed the alleged relationship amongst themselves, McCain said he never heard the concerns personally. He went on to pan the Times‘ sourcing of the article.

“I do notice with some interest that it’s, quote, ‘former aides,’ that this whole story is based on anonymous sources. … I’m very disappointed in that,” McCain said.

One former top campaign aide, John Weaver, did speak on the record to the Times and the Washington Post, which produced its own story on McCain and Iseman Thursday.

Weaver told the papers he met Iseman in person at Union Station in Washington, DC, to warn her to stay away from McCain. In his press conference Thursday, McCain said he had not spoken about the Times investigation with Weaver before it was published and he denied knowing about the Union Station meeting.

Right off the bat, McCain was asked about the most salacious implications of the Times article.

Q Senator, did you ever have any meeting with any of your staffers in which they would have intervened to ask you not to see Vicki Iseman or to be concerned about appearances of being too close to a lobbyist? SEN. MCCAIN: No. Q No meeting ever occurred? SEN. MCCAIN: No. Q No staffer was ever concerned about a possible romantic relationship? SEN. MCCAIN: If they were, they didn’t communicate that to me. Q Did you ever have such a relationship? SEN. MCCAIN: No.

McCain also acknowledged speaking to Times editor Bill Keller while the paper was reporting its story, but he said he never tried to dissuade him from publishing it.

“I called him up when the investigation was going on and I asked him basically what was happening and that we hoped that we could bring this to closure,” McCain said. “But it was a very brief conversation.”

At one point, Cindy McCain took to the microphone to share her own criticism of the paper.

“My children and I not only trust my husband but know that he would never do anything to not only disappoint our family, but [to] disappoint the people of America,” she said. “He’s a man of great character, and I’m very, very disappointed in The New York Times.”

McCain: Sanctions, attacks await Iran

Press TV
February 8, 2008

Fbiiraqisbein_mn

Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says the US and its European allies will adopt unilateral sanctions against Iran.

He stated that if the UN is not prepared to impose stronger political and economic sanctions, the United States and its European partners will take such measures.

He also said that a military solution should remain on the table as a last resort and that Iran is playing ‘a game it cannot win’.

“I intend to make it unmistakably clear to Iran that we will not permit a government that espouses the destruction of … Israel . . .and pledges undying enmity to the United States to possess weapons to advance their malevolent ambitions,” Suddeutschen Zeitung quoted the senator as saying.

The recently published US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) has confirmed that Iran is not developing nuclear arms.

Iran says under the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) it is entitled to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes and that its nuclear activities are aimed at civilian purposes.

Neocons Continue To Push ’Bombing Campaign’ Against Iran ’Now’

Following Podhoretz’s Lead, Right Wing Continues Push For ‘Bombing Campaign’ Against Iran ‘Now’

Think Progress
January 18, 2008

Fbiiraqisbein_mn

In the June 2007 issue of Commentary, neoconservative icon Norman Podhoretz laid out “The Case for Bombing Iran,” in which he argued that “the only prudent–indeed, the only responsible–course” is to “strike” Iran “as soon as it is logistically possible.” Though the recent NIE has slowed down hawkish belligerence towards Iran a bit, Podhoretz is still arguing that President Bush should take “military action” against Iran “soon.”

In a new article for Commentary, titled “Stopping Iran: Why the Case for Military Action Still Stands,” he argues that Bush should commence with a “bombing campaign”:

Iran can still be stopped from getting the bomb and even more millions of lives can be saved–but only provided that we summon up the courage to see what is staring us in the face and then act on what we see.

Podhoretz isn’t alone in his desire to keep pushing for an attack on Iran. Ever since Podhoretz’s recent article was released online, right-wing radio host Hugh Hewitt has been promoting it, encouraging his audience to “read the whole thing. Twice.” Hewitt has also been asking his guests, including New York Times columnist William Kristol, if they agree with Podhoretz’s assessment. Scarily, they do.

Bill Kristol:

HEWITT: Bill Kristol, do you think it is possible, not even likely, but just possible that the Bush administration will take military action against Iran in their last year?

KRISTOL: I think it’s possible. I think people were a little too quick after that National Intelligence Estimate came out, which was, I think, an attempt by the intelligence agencies to prevent the Bush administration from sort of seriously considering taking action. And I think people were too quick to say ooh, that rules it out, you know, they’re just paralyzed for the next year.

National Review’s Mark Steyn:

If we had a CIA that actually did anything, as opposed to sitting around Langley reading e-mail all day, we would be able to do that. But because we haven’t done that, the bombing option is becoming the only one that will be left, if not for this president, then for somebody.

Hewitt brought Podhoretz on his show yesterday, where he explicitly endorsed bombing Iran “now”:

HEWITT: Do you think President Bush needs to authorize air strikes against Iran now?

PODHORETZ: Yes, I do. The question is whether he will, although I thought, I was pretty confident that he would before the National Intelligence Estimate came out in early December. I still think in the end, he will order air strikes before he leaves office. But I am, as the NIE would say, I offer that prediction now with only low to moderate confidence.

HH: Well, I agree with your assessment of what has to happen.

With their desire to bomb Iran undeterred by the NIE, Hewitt and company are presumably pleased with President Bush’s repeated efforts to distance himself from the report.

Neocons: 2nd Amendment Has Restrictions

Neocons: 2nd Amendment Has Restrictions

Kurt Nimmo
Truth News
January 15, 2008

Fbiiraqisbein_mn

In Bushzarro world, up is down, black is white, and the Second Amendment permits the government to make firearm possession illegal.

“Since ‘unrestricted’ private ownership of guns clearly threatens the public safety, the 2nd Amendment can be interpreted to allow a variety of gun restrictions, according to the Bush administration,” reports . “The argument was delivered by U.S. Solicitor General Paul D. Clement in a brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court in the ongoing arguments over the legality of a District of Columbia ban on handguns in homes, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.”

Clement was an understudy of the neocon Laurence H. Silberman, a federal judge appointed co-chair of the Iraq Intelligence Commission — the official excuse making body designated to minimize the impact of neocon lies about Iraq — and the reactionary Supreme Antonin Scalia, a member of the Federalist Society, a fascist club aligned with the American Enterprise Institute, the CIA asset Richard Mellon Scaife, and a smattering of neocons, including Bill Kristol, the latest edition to the “liberal” New York Times. “Clement clerked for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia and worked as chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution, Federalism and Property Rights. He joined the Department of Justice in 2001 and moved into his current position in 2005.”

“Clement is the Bush administration’s chief lawyer before the court, and submitted the arguments in the case that is to determine whether the D.C. limit is constitutional. He said the 2nd Amendment, ‘protects an individual right to possess firearms, including for private purposes unrelated to militia operations,’ and noted the D.C. ban probably goes too far,” WorldNetDaily continues.

However, Clement argues that nothing “in the 2nd Amendment properly understood… calls for invalidation of the numerous federal laws regulating firearms.” In other words, according to Clement and the neocons, you have a right to possess firearms under the Constitution while at the same time the government has the right to make possession of firearms illegal. In Bushzarro world, up is down, black is white, and Orwellian doublethink – the ability to hold two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously – rules the day.

It should come as no surprise the neocons are gun-grabbers while at the same time claiming to be conservatives. “Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” the neocon sock puppet Bush told Republican Congressional leaders back in 2005 when some of them complained about the USA Patriot Act. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

Neocon guru Leo Strauss “abhorred liberal democracy,” not the modern version of lefty liberalism, but classic liberalism, i.e., natural rights of the sort at the bedrock of the Constitution. He engendered this hatred of individual rights in his followers, including Allan Bloom, Henry Jaffa, Irving Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz, and many others, a handful now at the very pinnacle of power and pulling Bush’s strings. Strauss’ vision was of “a hierarchical society based on natural inequalities and welded together with the fanatical devotion state religion engenders,” writes Michael Doliner.

Strauss’s political program is designed to counter the ills of liberalism. He believed in, and proposed, a state religion as a way of reviving absolutes, countering free thought, and enforcing a cohesive unity. Strauss argued against a society containing a multiplicity of coexisting religions and goals, which would break the society apart. He thought that ordinary people should not be exposed to reason. To rely on reason is to look into the abyss, for reason provided no comforting absolutes to shield one against the blank sky. Strauss opposed not reason itself, but reason stripped of its secrecy. Reason is for the few, not the many. The Enlightenment, the exposing of reason, was the beginning of the disaster. A reliance on reason, as opposed to religion, produced “modernity” which is nothing more than nihilism made political.

Jeffrey Steinberg expands on this:

The hallmark of Strauss’ approach to philosophy was his hatred of the modern world, his belief in a totalitarian system, run by “philosophers,” who rejected all universal principles of natural law, but saw their mission as absolute rulers, who lied and deceived a foolish “populist” mass, and used both religion and politics as a means of disseminating myths that kept the general population in clueless servitude. For Strauss and all of his protégés (Strauss personally had 100 Ph.D. students, and the “Straussians” now dominate most university political science and philosophy departments), the greatest object of hatred was the United States itself, which they viewed as nothing better than a weak, pathetic replay of “liberal democratic” Weimar Germany.

It stands to reason, then, that the hated, resented, and feared masses should be stripped of all rights, including the bedrock right promised by the Second Amendment, as they may eventually come to their senses, abandon Faux News and propaganda catapulted, storm the castle, and bring the warmongering and liberty hating protégés of Strauss to justice.

As Hitler, Mao, and Stalin realized — in fact as all dictators and tyrants understand — in order to run roughshod over the people and enslave them, you have to disarm them first and foremost.

It is the job of U.S. Solicitor General Paul D. Clement to begin this process.

Bill Kristol Attacks Ron Paul

Fascist Apologist Kristol Attacks Ron Paul

Lee Rogers
Rogue Government
December 24, 2007

The fascist establishment that runs this country is getting increasingly frightened of the growing popularity of the Ron Paul presidential campaign. Today, Fox News brought on fascist and establishment hack Bill Kristol to attack Dr. Paul using baseless and intellectually bankrupt arguments. Kristol also resorted to name calling, even referring to Dr. Paul as a “crank”, “anti-American” and a “crackpot”. Kristol appeared openly nervous during the attack segment as he promoted the pro-Nazi and collectivist ideologies of the corporate warfare and welfare state. Strangely enough, Fox News which uses the slogan “Fair and Balanced”, allowed Kristol to spew his attacks unopposed. If Fox News had any sort of credibility, they would have invited on one of Dr. Paul’s supporters, a free market thinker, a libertarian or any number of people to counter Kristol. Of course, Fox News has no credibility and they are simply a propaganda network for the military industrial complex so clearly this would be a bit too much to ask.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rduigENzHo

Kristol attacked Dr. Paul on the statements he made on Meet the Press this past Sunday in which Dr. Paul made the point that we could have gotten rid of slavery in other ways without a Civil War. To this, Kristol responded calling Dr. Paul a “crackpot” for merely suggesting that 600,000 people didn’t need to die. Kristol then claimed that Dr. Paul didn’t care much about liberty because of his opposition to the Vietnam War and claimed that there is currently a lack of liberty in Vietnam. This is odd considering that Vietnam has become a booming free market economy without the military industrial complex waging war in their nation. In addition, why is Kristol concerned about lost liberty in Vietnam as we continue to lose liberty here in the United States? The ever present police state, surveillance society and the passage of anti-freedom laws like the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act is proof of this. If Kristol were really concerned about liberty and freedom, he should be focused in on the loss of liberty and freedom here first before being concerned with the situation in Vietnam.Kristol then called Dr. Paul “anti-American” and a “crank” because he doesn’t support the empire building policies of the past hundred years. Kristol even referred to the phony war on terrorism and used this to claim that Dr. Paul was against liberty. Considering that the phony terror war is being used to destroy liberty and freedoms here in the United States, it seems quite clear that Kristol is the one who is against these concepts.Kristol is nothing more than a propagandist and hack for the military industrial complex. He makes the assertion that those who are anti-war and non-interventionists are either to the far left and far right of the phony political paradigm. The fact of the matter is, the supreme law of the land is still the Constitution which provides appropriate checks and balances to ensure that a declaration of war is used only as a last resort in defense of liberty. The Constitution is largely based off of a doctrine of non-interventionism and frowns on unnecessary wars being waged. The individuals that sell themselves as moderates on the establishment media are actually the extremists. In actuality, Kristol is the anti-American, not Dr. Paul. Kristol and the establishment are scared to death that Dr. Paul’s campaign is succeeding and his appearance on Fox News was a pathetic attempt to make people believe that he can’t win.

Kristol: Iran Is ‘The Only Real Threat’ To Success In Iraq

Kristol: Iran Is ‘The Only Real Threat’ To Success In Iraq

Bill Douglas
OpEdNews
October 22, 2007

Today, on Fox News Sunday, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol declared that the U.S. was close to victory in the Iraq war, arguing that the “only” concern left for the U.S is dealing with alleged Iranian involvement in Iraq:

We’re winning in Iraq. That is the absolute crucial precondition to having success in the broader fight against Islamic jihadism. … And I think we are going to have to be serious about dealing with both their intervention in Iraq — which is now the only real threat, I think, incidentally, to relative success in Iraq — and their nuclear program.

Watch it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw55sRLkjjA

While Iran may be causing some violence in Iraq, there are more pressing “threats” to “success.” A National Intelligence Estimate released in February concluded that Iranian involvement was “not likely” to be a major driver of violence. An August McClatchy analysis found that the majority of suicide bombers in Iraq are from Saudi Arabia, not Iran.

In reality, “Iraq’s complex and overlapping sectarian, political and ethnic conflicts, as well as the difficult security situation continue to hinder progress in promoting economic development, the rule of law and political reconciliation,” according to Special Inspector General For Iraq Reconstruction Stuart Bowen.

Kristol used his allegations of Iranian involvement in Iraq to push for more war in the Middle East, claiming, “There has to be the credible threat of force” with Iran. He was quickly rebuked by Juan Williams:

Do you think there’s any question about this — whether or not we have credible military force? We are the superpower in the world. … The thing is we have our military stretched beyond all bounds, and you seem to want to engage in other wars. I don’t know why you feel this way.

Bill Kristol will readily lower his standards for the Iraq war in order to implement his hawkish, neoconservative agenda.

Transcript:

KRISTOL: We’re winning in Iraq. That is the absolute crucial precondition to having success in the broader fight against Islamic jihadism. So Senator Obama was wrong about that.

And he’s wrong about Iran. Senator Obama’s professed position –he’s given speeches on this — is that Iran should not be allowed to have a nuclear weapon. He’s not comfortable with an Iranian nuclear weapon.

And yet we’ve been pursuing diplomacy for four years, with our European friends — just two days ago, Ali Larijani, the Iranian negotiator who — when you go to the Europeans, they say, Well, Ahmadinejad is crazy, but he doesn’t matter. Khamenei, who knows? But Larijani — he’s a reasonable man. We can work with him. He resigned.

He was forced out. It looks like the Iranian government is going for the full hard line on their nuclear program. And I think we are going to have to be serious about dealing with both their intervention in Iraq — which is now the only real threat, I think, incidentally, to relative success in Iraq — and their nuclear program.

WALLACE: When you say getting serious, I think a lot of our viewers are going to say, Kristol thinks there’s going to be a war.

WILLIAMS: Yes.

KRISTOL: I think there could be a use of force. September 6th, 2007, when Israel used force against Syria to prevent them from developing nuclear weapons with North Korean aid, is going to go down in history, I think, as the date where we got a glimpse of the kind of future we’re dealing with.

If diplomacy works, that’s great. There has to be the credible threat of force both on the nuclear issue and, I think much more short-term, though — I agree with Brit on this. I think the short-term question is does Petraeus think he needs a little help across the border to secure our successes in Iraq.

And if so, I think the president will give it to him. We can’t let them just build IEDs and train Iraqis with impunity across the border.

WILLIAMS: Look. Do you think there’s any question about this –whether or not we have credible military force? We are the superpower in the world.

The thing is we have our military stretched beyond all bounds, and you seem to want to engage in other wars. I don’t know why you feel this way.

KRISTOL: I want to win the war. I want to support the military who are fighting over there who are being killed…

WILLIAMS: Oh, wait a second.

KRISTOL: … who are being killed by Iranian weapons.

WILLIAMS: Just a minute. You mean when it came to the surge, you wanted to defend the surge. Why don’t we defend the fact that for five years we’ve been involved in a war that’s cost us life and limb, and we have — we’re totally out of control?

Cheney Orders Media To Sell Attack On Iran

Cheney Orders Media To Sell Attack On Iran

Fox News, Wall Street Journal instructed to launch PR blitz for upcoming military strike

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
September 4, 2007

Dick Cheney has ordered top Neo-Con media outlets, including Fox News and the Wall Street Journal, to unleash a PR blitz to sell a war with Iran from today, according to Barnett Rubin, the highly respected Afghanistan expert at New York University.

The New Yorker magazine reports that Rubin had a conversation with a member of a top neoconservative institution in Washington, who told him that “instructions” had been passed on from the Office of the Vice-President to roll out a campaign for war with Iran in the week after Labor Day.

“It will be coordinated with the American Enterprise Institute, the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, Commentary, Fox, and the usual suspects, writes Rubin, “It will be heavy sustained assault on the airwaves, designed to knock public sentiment into a position from which a war can be maintained. Evidently they don’t think they’ll ever get majority support for this—they want something like 35-40 percent support, which in their book is “plenty.”

Rubin subsequently confirmed with a second source that the propaganda coup had been launched and the individual, another top Neo-Con at a major think tank, had this to say about it: “I am a Republican. I am a conservative. But I’m not a raging lunatic. This is lunatic.”

An organized mass media campaign to propagandize for a military strike on Iran mirrors exactly what happened in late 2002 in preparation for the invasion of Iraq and would be seen as par for the course in anticipation of an attack that presidential candidate Ron Paul amongst other expert observers fear will take place within 12 months.

President Bush met directly with talk radio idealogues at the White House last year to push the Neo-Con agenda. Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Neal Boortz and Michael Medved (pictured below) amongst others all attended and received their talking points straight from the President’s mouth.

Considering the history of the sordid “fake news” scandal, where millions of dollars were used to create pre-packaged government press releases disguised as news, along with the Armstrong Williams farce, it should surprise no one that such “instructions” are now being handed out to prepare the public for another military invasion.

The issuance of orders for Neo-Con mass media arms to push for an assault on Iran also puts the U.S. on red alert for a terror attack, whether real or manufactured, which Dick Cheney has already promised will immediately be blamed on Iran no matter who the real culprits are.

On August 1st, 2005 the American Conservative reported that Cheney had tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan involved a massive air strike on Iran which included the use of nuclear weapons.

The publication reported that, “The response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States,” meaning that any such attack will immediately be blamed on Iran and any evidence to the contrary will be buried.

The London Times reported on Sunday that the Pentagon had finalized plans for a 3 day blitz designed to annihilate 1,200 targets in Iran and destroy the country’s military capability.

Alexis Debat, director of terrorism and national security at the Nixon Center, said last week that US military planners were not preparing for “pinprick strikes” against Iran’s nuclear facilities. “They’re about taking out the entire Iranian military,” he said.

Debat was speaking at a meeting organised by The National Interest, a conservative foreign policy journal. He told The Sunday Times that the US military had concluded: “Whether you go for pinprick strikes or all-out military action, the reaction from the Iranians will be the same.” It was, he added, a “very legitimate strategic calculus”.

Rhetoric regarding a potential military attack on Iran has heated again over the past week, with President Bush having warned of the risk of a “nuclear holocaust” if the country was allowed to acquire nuclear capability.

In a speech last Monday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that a diplomatic push by the world’s powers to rein in Tehran’s nuclear program was the only alternative to “an Iranian bomb or the bombing of Iran.”

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad subsequently stated that a U.S. attack on Iran was “impossible” due to U.S. troops being tied down in Afghanistan and Iraq. Yesterday, he claimed to have proof that the U.S. were not planning to attack, bizarrely citing his mathematical skills as an engineer and faith in God.

A January poll by Ipsos found that 40% of Americans thought it likely that Iran would be attacked by the end of the year. The U.S. has stationed three aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, the Nimitz, a nuclear-powered carrier, John C. Stennis Strike Group, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, a relief carrier.

The U.S. government is openly funding and supporting the activities of Jundullah, a Sunni Al-Qaeda terrorist group formerly headed by the alleged mastermind of 9/11, to carry out bombings in Iran and destabilize Ahmadinejad’s power base.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard military was recently declared to be a terrorist organization by the White House, another ominous sign that an attack is being readied.

Fox News Responds To Cheney Call For Iran Attack PR Blitz
The propaganda flows from the administration’s favourite warmongering mouthpiece

Steve Watson
Infowars.net
September 5, 2007

Following yesterday’s revelation that Dick Cheney has ordered top Neo-Con media outlets to unleash a PR blitz to sell a war with Iran, Fox News has already responded with two prime time slots devoted to all out warmongering propaganda in favour of a strike on Iran’s facilities.

The New Yorker magazine reported yesterday that Barnett Rubin, the highly respected Afghanistan expert at New York University, had a conversation with a member of a top neoconservative institution in Washington, who told him that “instructions” had been passed on from the Office of the Vice-President to roll out a campaign for war with Iran in the week after Labor Day.

The onslaught has already begun on Fox News with both the FOX & Friends and Hannity & Colmes shows devoting extensive segments to discussions on attacking Iran.

The former show featured arch Neocon, Weekly Standard Editor and PNAC Chairman Bill Kristol who gave not one but two reasons for bombing Iran. Kristol stated that the US will have to take action either to eliminate the Iranian nuclear program or in order to quell alleged support of Iraqi insurgents by Iranian forces.

“We may have to do more to stop Iran, at least with respect to Iraq, leave aside the nuclear program.” Kristol stated.

He neglected to mention the fact that Iranian support of Iraqi insurgents has not been verified by any intelligence and has been flatly refuted by the Iranian government. In addition it is so called “Al Qaeda affiliated insurgent groups” that the U.S. government is openly funding and supporting in order to carry out bombings in Iran and destabilize Ahmadinejad’s power base.

The Iranian government is also diplomatically allied to the current Iraqi government, where as the Neocon White House has recently been implicated in the actual overthrow and replacement of the Iraqi administration.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwvXeZscxXU

Later the same evening Hannity and Colmes featured Michael Ledeen whom Hannity announced as one of his favourite authors, calling his newest book on how Iran needs to be attacked “terrific”.

Ledeen spouted that “It could be almost any day now where we have two terrible choices to make, do we accept the existence of a nuclear Iran, with all that implies or do we attack them militarily, which is also a terrible choice.”

Hannity then suggested that there is a modicum of gender inequality in Iran, as if that provides reasoning for attacking the country with military force, and stated that he “views them as the rise of Nazi-ism in our time”.

All indications are that an attack is imminent. The London Times reported on Sunday that the Pentagon had finalized plans for a 3 day blitz designed to annihilate 1,200 targets in Iran and destroy the country’s military capability. in addition President Bush has warned of the risk of a “nuclear holocaust” if the Iran is allowed to acquire nuclear capability, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has intimated that an attack is on the cards, The White House has declared the Iranian army a terrorist group, and the U.S. has stationed three aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf.

Bolton Hopes U.S. Will Attack Iran in 6 Months

Bolton: I ‘Absolutely’ Hope The U.S. Will Attack Iran In The Next ‘Six Months’

Think Progress
August 23, 2007

Yesterday, Raw Story pointed out that former CIA operative Bob Baer told Fox News that the Bush administration will likely attack Iran in the coming months. “Iran policy is on close hold, but the feeling is we will hit the Islamic Revolutionary Guard corps sometime next six months or so,” said Baer.

Today, former U.N. ambassador John Bolton appeared on Fox News and responded. He said that while he couldn’t confirm Baer’s statements, he “absolutely” hoped they were true:

HEMMER: One final step here, too, that I want to take with you. You told one of our producers earlier today that you don’t know if it’s true — and you’ve made that clear in our interview here, that you don’t know what the odds are or are not against that — but you hope it’s true. Why do you hope it’s true?

BOLTON: Absolutely. I hope Iran understands that we are very serious, that we are determined they are not going to get a nuclear weapon capability, and unless they change the strategic decision they’ve been pursuing for close to 20 years, that that’s something they better factor into their calculations.

Bolton’s calls for strikes against Iran mirror those of other neocons, such as Bill Kristol and Michael Rubin, who also pushed for the Iraq invasion. Bolton’s claim that “Iran is interfering in Iraq and is posing a direct threat to our troops” is not a reason to strike the country. In reality, both Gen. Peter Pace and the National Intelligence Estimate have confirmed that Iran is “not likely” to be a major driver of violence in Iraq.

Lieberman: If “we” don’t attack Iran we’ll be seen as weak..

Neocons Press Pakistan Endgame

Ah, yes, another clueless political hack, this one who works for a dictator. “It would be ‘completely counterproductive’ for the United States to launch military strikes in the Pakistani tribal regions where al Qaeda and Taliban militants have created safe havens, Pakistan’s foreign minister said Sunday,” reports CNN.

It is “completely counterproductive” because Pakistan’s ISI has spent a lot of time and money reconstituting the Taliban in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas or FATA of Pakistan. “The ISI quietly allowed free passage within the Waziristans to Afghan Taliban commanders Jalaluddin Haqqani and Mullah Dadallah. These leaders’ task was to marshal the different tribal Taliban chieftains into a movement coherent enough to abide by a truce. But the price for peace was Talibanization. It was pronounced in a communiqué issued by Haqqani in May 2006,” writes Graham Usher for the Middle East Report. Of course, as we know, the process of talibanization was a collaborative effort between the CIA and the ISI. CNN, of course, does not bother to inform us of this crucial fact.

Usher fills in the egregious memory holes left behind by CNN:

For the last 30 years, FATA’s isolation has served another purpose: The state has used the region as the launching pad for Pakistan-inspired insurgencies in Afghanistan, with the first coming after the communist coup in Kabul in 1978. Fueled by CIA and Saudi money, but engineered by Pakistan’s premier Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) directorate, the militias incubated in the tribal areas became national, regional and ultimately global Islamist movements, of which al-Qaeda is only the most notorious. Amidst penury grew a war economy driven by opium, guns and God, while jihad was first taught, then waged, by generations of young men, dislocated and orphaned in Afghan refugee camps, but schooled in madrassas allied to one or another of Pakistan’s Islamist parties or sponsored by states like Saudi Arabia.

According to the estimate of Pashtun nationalist politician Afrasiab Khattak, as many as 500,000 young men were thus socialized during the Afghan wars. Overwhelmingly Pashtun, they were bound by tribal codes of honor, loyalty and revenge. But, uprooted from their villages, they were also susceptible to new idioms of Islam, whether the Deobandi strain peddled by the Pakistani madrassas or the austere Wahhabism of the Saudi Arabians and other “Afghan Arabs” who had come to fight the Soviets. In many cases, faith became a demotic cocktail of the two.

It is precisely this “demotic cocktail,” engineered by the CIA and boasted to be its most successful operation, we are now told threatens our way of life. “Job No. 1 is to protect the American people. There are no options off the table,” declared Frances Townsend, the neocon Homeland Security advisor.

As should be expected, the neocons don’t give a whit about Pakistan’s dictator, Pervez Musharraf, who has served more or less as an obedient vassal for his back-stabbing boss and his clash of civilization minions. If indeed there “are no options off the table,” i.e., the Pentagon attacks FATA, there is a good chance Musharraf will be toast.

“A strong action in Pakistan’s lawless tribal areas bordering Afghanistan by beleaguered Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf could lead to a spilt in the army, a media report said on Saturday,” reports the Times of India. “Detailing a multitude of troubles that Musharraf faces at home, Time magazine quoting a former head of the powerful intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence said many foreign observers believe that his days are numbered as leader of Pakistan…. in an interview … Hamid Gul, former head of ISI, has warned that if Musharraf does take both gloves off in tribal areas, it would just increase the likelihood of a split in army.”

According to Gul, the “officer cadres are liberal, secular, they come from the elite classes. But the rank and file of the army were never secular, they were always religious. If there is a face-off between the army and people, the leadership may lose control of the army. The army does not feel happy. They are from the same streets, the same villages, the same bazaars of the lower and middle classes, and they want the same thing (Islamic law) for their country.”

Thus, considering Musharraf’s precarious situation, it is quite natural for Khurshid Kasuri, Pakistan’s foreign minister, to publicly bristle over the neocon plan to strike “actionable targets” in Pakistan. Kasuri and Islamabad have characterized the neocon threats as “irresponsible and dangerous.” Pakistani Foreign Office spokeswoman Tasneem Aslam added: “…we have stated in the clearest terms that any attack inside our territory would be unacceptable” and any “such action would be deeply resented in the tribal areas and generally in Pakistan.”

Kasuria and Aslam, however, are missing the point, or at least are not admitting it during press conferences.

Earlier this month, the boy wonder of the neocons, Bill Kristol, told Fox News the neocons will “take military action [against Pakistan] … over the next few weeks or months…. Bush has to disrupt that sanctuary.” In fact, according to Kristol, “we won’t even tell Musharraf…. We’ll do what we have to do in Western Pakistan and Musharraf can say, ‘Hey, they didn’t tell me.'”

In other words, Kristol and the neocons will not lose any sleep over the Pakistani military deposing Musharraf or the fact hundreds, possibly thousands of Pakistanis will be slaughtered, the latter just another day in the neocon neighborhood.

Kristol’s bright idea “would lead to major riots throughout Pakistan and the Arab world, and it would lead to certainly a major insurgency against US forces,” Seth Jones, a South Asia specialist at the RAND Institute, told Australian Broadcasting Corporation last week, according to Jim Lobe.

It would be another egg in the basket for the neocons, as they are determined to agitate Muslims across the board and force them to confront the United States, preferably at home through some terrorist attack, either real of contrived by the CIA or the neocon infested side of the Pentagon. Kristol and the neocons understand all too well the heat must be turned up if they are going to realize their objectives before the commander and decider guy leaves office next year.
