For more than a year, senior researcher Dr. Walter Ewing and research associate Seth Hoy analyzed and compiled data on every state in the US to track the powerful impact immigrants have on this country. The result: A recent study released by the Immigration Policy Center that highlights both the political and economic power that immigrants—specifically Latinos and Asians—have on the United States. With Arizona’s controversial SB 1070 scheduled to go into effect today (although a ruling yesterday by US District Judge Susan Bolton blocks some aspects of the law), politicians, business owners and the like should take note.
“Whether immigrants comprise a significant component of a state’s population, as [they do] in California, Arizona, New York or Illinois, or a very small percentage of the population as a whole in states such as North and South Dakota, West Virginia or Rhode Island, they, nonetheless, have a surprising positive impact that cannot be ignored,” said Mary Giovagnoli, director of the IPC. “Armed with this information, the public can make better, more thoughtful decisions about the type of immigration policy they want to see at both the federal and state level.”
The facts for Arizona—the first to take such harsh actions toward immigrants and thus incite the federal government to file suit against the state—show that if all unauthorized immigrants were removed from the state, Arizona would lose $26.4 billion in economic activity, $11.7 billion in gross state product, and approximately 140,324 jobs, according to a Perryman Group report. Latinos, some of whom are reportedly fleeing the state for fear of what will happen when SB 1070 takes effect, make up nearly 30 % of Arizona’s population. “Obviously it’s not good to alienate 30 %of your population,” said Ewing.

‘Racist’ Bill Blocked: Arizona immigration law takes a hit

District Judge Susan Bolton has issued an injunction blocking key parts of Arizona’s SB 1070 from going into effect tomorrow, amid a mass exodus of Latinos from the state.
The judge temporarily blocked implementation of laws allowing police to stop anyone they had “reasonable suspicion” to believe was in the country illegally, and requiring immigrants to carry federal documentation at all times. She also blocked the officers from being able to make warrantless arrests of those they suspect to be in the country illegally. However, the overall law is still set to go into effect on July 29th, making key opponents reluctant to celebrate this apparent victory.
“There is a substantial likelihood that officers will wrongfully arrest legal resident aliens under the new (law),” Bolton ruled. “By enforcing this statute, Arizona would impose a ‘distinct, unusual and extraordinary’ burden on legal resident aliens that only the federal government has the authority to impose.”

The American way of life is under attack by the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Government. There are 2 pending bills in the U.S. House of Representatives that may eventually pass the Senate and become law. These bills will make “hostile speech” and prejudice a felony, it is the first step in ensuring the destruction of the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
The House already passed a bill titled “The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Act of 2009” (HR 1913) allowing the federal government to aid local/state and tribal governments to prosecute any crime motivated by prejudice (in terms of race, religion, personal sexual orientation, gender identity and disability). The whole point of the 1st amendment is to protect offensive speech, not polite speech. If this bill passes the Senate this will mean the official end of free speech in America as we know it.
This bill could lead to an age of “Pre-Crime”, if say the FBI suspects you of potentially committing a hate crime you can be prosecuted even if no crime was even committed. But still this remains to be seen.
The other bill that was introduced by the House recently is called the “Megan Meier Cyber-bullying Prevention Act” (HR 1966) if passed the Senate it will lead to fines and up to 2 years in prison if anyone uses popular online media outlets (such as blogs, myspace, facebook, twitter etc.) to cause “substantial emotional distress through severe repeated and hostile speech”. In other words, if you hurt someones feelings on the internet you could be put in prison or fined!
There was a somewhat similar Orwellian piece of legislation that never passed the Senate called the “Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007” (S.1959, otherwise known as the Thought Crimes Bill) which would have given Homeland Security the authority to fund Universities to study ways to stop “extremist belief systems” and “radical ideologies” of Americans. Homeland Security released 3 new memos claiming civil disobedience, the alternative news media and dissent against the U.S. government are extremist activities.
The most recent memo titled the “Domestic Extremism Lexicon”, mixes peaceful activists in with prison gangs and criminals. Here is a small list of so-called extremists according to the DHS and I&A:
Alternative Media – Various information sources (online) that interpret events that are different from the mainstream media.
Rightwing Activists – Those who are anti-income tax, pro-sovereignty, anti-illegal immigration, support the U.S. Constitution and bill of rights, pro-militias, anti-new world order, anti-north american union, anti-abortion protesters.
Leftwing Activists – Those who support animal rights, environmentalism, anti-war activism, those who are communist/socialist or anti-capitalists and anarchists. (black bloc are agent provocateurs)
Civil Disobedience – The things Martin Luther King and Ghandi have done are now considered extremism according to Homeland Security! Protesting and the right to assemble in a peaceful manner is now considered an EXTREME act, amazing!
Leaderless Resistance – Individuals acting independently and anonymously outside formal organizational structures. This probably means groups like the Truth/Patriot Movement who fight against the New World Order and question things like the Federal Reserve and 9/11. We are totally non-violent and only seek to wage an information-war against One World Government. But like any leaderless group we are prone to violent infiltrators and Black-ops/Psy-Ops by the mainstream media to paint us as evil and dangerous terrorists.
Hackers – Script kiddies, website defacers, DOS’ers are now a potential extremist threat.
All of these non-violent groups are being lumped-up with prison gangs, criminals, racist groups like white supremacists, black power advocates, Mexican pro-atzlan separatists. They want to demonize 1st amendment activists, blurring the line between free speech and terrorism, blurring the line between crime and terrorism. Basically they are conditioning the public to believe that all crime is now terrorism!
Another new, yet very similar unclassified memo by Homeland Security called the “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” states the: “prolonged economic downturn” could lead to “fertile recruitment” of returning Iraq veterans by “rightwing extremists” to cause violence against the U.S. Government.
The memo says the increase of concern of loss of sovereignty, illegal immigration, emerging gun-control treaties will cause rightwing groups to turn to terrorism, the memo states: “they are highly critical of the U.S. government’s response to illegal immigration and oppose government programs that are designed to extend rights to illegal aliens, such as issuing driver’s licenses or national identification cards and providing in-state tuition, medical benefits or public education.”.
2 points id like to make; 1) There was never a case where a rightwing group has caused terrorism at the southern border, and 2) how else does the government expect Americans to react when our own government supports people who break the law?
The memo also outlandishly claims anti-New World Order “conspiracy theorists” are violent rightwing extremists and the memo claims the New World Order is only based on Communism and has nothing to do with the Anglo-American internationalist’s quest for a world system. They further claim that anti-New World Order theorists are violent and strongly anti-Jewish. They also claim the April 4th shooting of 3 police officers in Pittsburgh was carried out by a conspiracy theorist that was against “Jewish-controlled One World Government”. This is just some more demonization of people who are having an effect and speaking truth to power.
This memo is a lot similar to a 2006 document revealing the Bush Administration was targeting 9/11 “conspiracy theorists” claiming al-qaeda terrorism springs from: “subcultures of conspiracy and misinformation,” and that “terrorists recruit more effectively from populations whose information about the world is contaminated by falsehoods and corrupted by conspiracy theories. The distortions keep alive grievances and filter out facts that would challenge popular prejudices and self-serving propaganda.” [Page 10]
The last new-memo I will summarize is the MIAC Strategic Report that was given to Missouri law enforcement officers indicated that presidential candidates; Chuck Baldwin, Ron Paul and Bob Barr are terrorists!
Infowars.com broke the story when radio talk-show host Alex Jones received a copy of the MIAC report from an anonymous source in the Missouri police department. Infowars.com writes: “The MIAC report specifically describes supporters of presidential candidates Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr as ‘militia’ influenced terrorists and instructs the Missouri police to be on the lookout for supporters displaying bumper stickers and other paraphernalia associated with the Constitutional, Campaign for Liberty, and Libertarian parties,”. State law enforcement across the nation already have “fusion centers” to crack down on the patriot/liberty movement. [Source]
These are stunning events in the history of America, more and more ordinary peaceful Americans are being hassled for having a belief that freedom is an individual’s inalienable constitutional right and should not be controlled by the bureaucracy of big government.
This month in Louisiana a driver was stopped, questioned and detained for having a “Don’t Tread On Me” bumper sticker on his car. The driver’s sister-in-law reported that the police officer told him “he had a subversive survivalist bumper sticker on his car.” and that the driver was suspect of “extremist” activities, she continued: “They proceeded to keep him there on the side of the road while they ran whatever they do to see if you have a record, keeping him standing by the side of the road for 30 minutes,”. [Source] Another bumper sticker stop happened in Las Vegas in 2008, a driver was pulled over and questioned. After, the driver headed to his car and the officer said “you know why we had to do this right?”, the officer repeated his comment and pointed at RON PAUL and INFOWARS.COM bumper stickers on the back of his vehicle. Want more? A Michigan man stopped, handcuffed, assaulted and branded “unpatriotic” and was subjected to a search of his car, during the search drugs were allegedly planted, all for distributing DVD’s about 9/11 Truth. [Source] In 2004 a Kentucky carpenter distributed Ron Paul and Alex Jones videotapes to a state trooper. A week later he was pulled over, arrested and almost faced a year in jail. [Source] A bible college student in Texas was accused by Homeland Security and FBI agents of “committing acts of terror and espionage” after talking to Boy Scouts about the U.S. Constitution! [Source]
I hope many of you feel dejected enough by this information to take some action. But if not, there are a few other documents you should take a look at:
The “Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Law Enforcement Pamphlet” identifies citizens who buy baby formula, beer, wearing Levi’s Jeans, traveling with a drivers license and traveling with women and children to considered to be dangerous terrorists! A Virginia Training Manual used to help state employees help identify terrorists, it lists anti-government, property rights activists, people who use binoculars, video cameras and notepads. And last but not least, a Pheonix 9/11 Manual disseminated amongst federal employees revealed potential terrorist as “defenders of the U.S. Constitution against federal government and the United Nations,” and individuals who “make numerous references to the U.S. Constitution.”.
The U.S. Government has become so tyrannical, so corrupt, it has transformed from a “government of the people” into a bureaucratic big brother police state because we allowed ourselves to become distracted from what is of utmost importance; freedom and the preservation of liberty for future generations.
We are now entering the final phase of a New World Order, where internationalist elite control all government to be in favor of a One World Fascist Dictatorship, worse than what George Orwell ever wrote about. A modern era of totalitarianism maintained by a technology-driven control grid, where infra-red spy satellites used by law enforcement can see through your house, drones that can keep an eye on your vehicle, taxing you by the mile, ticketing you when you run a red light. Iris-scanners and bio-scanner cameras at airports measuring your body temperature, pulse and breathing to make sure you aren’t a terrorist. Microchips that control every aspect of your daily life.
George Orwell’s chilling warning of a regime out of control seeking to rule every waking moment of a persons life is not so far off from today and the future of the 21st century. The question is, will this be the picture of what is to come.

Speed Cameras Issue 3,500 Tickets In One Day

The leafy capital suburb of Chevy Chase Village is a great place to live but you wouldn’t want to visit there.
At least not by car. Easy-to-miss automated speed cameras on its half-mile main drag, where the speed limit is 30 mph, caught 3,500 speeders on their first day of operation last fall. Before that, the norm was six tickets a day.
Many speeders first learn they’ve been caught when citations, along with photographic evidence, show up at the addresses that match the violators’ license plates.
Be forewarned: More than 300 U.S. communities use automated “cop cam” systems like Chevy Chase’s. They’re after not just speeders but also red-light violators and railroad-crossing jumpers.
In the works are bus-mounted cop cams that ticket bus lane intruders, cop cams to punish speeders in highway construction zones, even cop cam systems that ticket motorists based on a car’s average speed over a mile. They catch drivers who brake for known camera sites, then resume speeding.

The same software that processes violations lets drivers view the five seconds before and after their alleged offenses on their home computers.
“It’s very compelling evidence,” said Cristina Weekes, the executive vice president for sales and marketing at Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., of Scottsdale, Ariz., a leading cop-cam maker.
“It’s almost a no-win,” admitted Horace Bradshaw, Washington’s best-known traffic court defense lawyer.
When polled, substantial majorities approve of cop cams. When ticketed, however, lots are outraged.
“It’s like Nazi Germany!” sputtered Dan Bradley, 41, a federal personnel investigator who routinely runs the six-lane Chevy Chase gantlet. “They ticket you for speeds that aren’t dangerous.”
In the peaceable United Kingdom, where cop cams are 10 times more widely used, saboteurs have shot out cameras lenses, disabled them with bolt cutters, set fire to them and pulled them down with a tractor’s help, according to news reports.

Border Patrol Held At Gunpoint By Mexican Military

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was held at gunpoint Sunday night by members of the Mexican military who had crossed the border into Arizona, but the soldiers returned to Mexico without incident when backup agents responded to assist.
Agents assigned to the Border Patrol station at Ajo, Ariz., said the Mexican soldiers crossed the international border in an isolated area about 100 miles southwest of Tucson and pointed rifles at the agent, who was not identified.
It was unclear what the soldiers were doing in the United States, but U.S. law enforcement authorities have long said that current and former Mexican military personnel have been hired to protect drug and migrant smugglers.
“Unfortunately, this sort of behavior by Mexican military personnel has been going on for years,” union Local 2544 of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) said on its Web page. “They are never held accountable, and the United States government will undoubtedly brush this off as another case of ’Oh well, they didn’t know they were in the United States.’
“It is fortunate that this incident didn’t end in a very ugly gunfight,” said the local’s posting.

FDIC Takes Over Two More Failed Banks

The 28 branches of 1st National Bank of Nevada and First Heritage Bank, operating in Nevada, Arizona and California, were closed Friday by federal regulators.
The banks, owned by Scottsdale, Ariz.-based First National Bank Holding Co., were scheduled to reopen on Monday as Mutual of Omaha Bank branches, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said.
The FDIC said the takeover of the failed banks was the least costly resolution and all depositors – including those with funds in excess of FDIC insurance limits – will switch to Mutual of Omaha with “the full amount of their deposits.”
The FDIC also said accountholders can access their funds during the weekend by writing checks or using ATM or debit cards.

It’s beginning to look as if Fortis was right. In June the Belgium-Dutch financial giant, itself beset by financial woes, warned, according to a Dutch paper, that the “complete collapse of the U.S. financial markets” was in the offing, just days or weeks away.
Maybe it won’t be a “complete” collapse, but the dire warning is beginning to appear more credible daily. Just days after the Fortis warning, letters from Senator Charles Schumer speculating about the “possible collapse of big mortgage lender IndyMac Bancorp Inc.” set off a run on that ailing mortgage lender with depositors withdrawing more than $1.3 billion in just 11 days.
In the weeks since there has been increasing speculation about the stability of both the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac). These holdovers from the Roosevelt Administration’s ill-conceived New Deal presently own or guarantee half of the $12 trillion U.S. mortgage market, yet they were characterized recently as “insolvent” by former Federal Reserve President William Poole.
In a free market, when you perform poorly your business might fail. But Poole, a consummate government regulator, thinks Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac are too big to fail. “Clearly they must be supported,” he said according to a July 11 Reuters report. “They (the U.S. government) cannot allow that amount of assets … to go into limbo.” In other words, according to Poole, the federal government must take money (a lot of money!) from some and give it to others. As economist Frederic Bastiat eloquently pointed out, that is socialism, the law run amok and turned on its head.
On top of IndyMac and Fannie and Freddie, the bad news from the financial sector keeps coming. On Tuesday, Wachovia Corp. reported striking losses totaling nearly $9 billion for the quarter. “Our reported results today are clearly a disappointing performance for which we take responsibility,” Wachovia CEO Bob Steel told analysts on a conference call. The nation’s fourth largest bank also noted that it would eliminate as many as 10,750 positions.

Hundreds of police, firefighters, paramedics and utility workers have been trained and recently dispatched as “Terrorism Liaison Officers” in Colorado, Arizona and California to watch for “suspicious activity” which is later fed into a secret government database.
According to a Denver Post report, “It’s a tactic intended to feed better data into terrorism early-warning systems and uncover intelligence that could help fight anti-U.S. forces. But the vague nature of the TLOs’ mission, and their focus on reporting both legal and illegal activity, has generated objections from privacy advocates and civil libertarians.
“Suspicious activity” is broadly defined in TLO training as behavior that could lead to terrorism: taking photos of no apparent aesthetic value, making measurements or notes, espousing extremist beliefs or conversing in code, according to a draft Department of Justice/Major Cities Chiefs Association document.”
“We don’t snoop into private citizens’ lives. We aren’t living in a communist state,” claims Lt. Tony Lopez, commander of Denver’s intelligence unit – but the program bears close parallels to the East German Stasi system, which at its height employed one informant for every seven citizens.
Democracy Now interviewed the Denver Post writer and an ACLU representative about the program.
It is also reminiscent of the supposedly canned 2002 Operation TIPS program, which would have turned 4 per cent of Americans into informants under the jurisdiction of the Justice Department.
TIPS lived on in other guises, such as the Highway Watch program, a $19 billion dollar Homeland Security-run project which trains truckers to watch for suspicious activity on America’s highways.
More recently, ABC News reported that “The FBI is taking cues from the CIA to recruit thousands of covert informants in the United States as part of a sprawling effort…..to aid with criminal investigations.”
Since authorities now define mundane activities like buying baby formula, beer, wearing Levi jeans, carrying identifying documents like a drivers license and traveling with women or children or mentioning the U.S. constitution as the behavior of potential terrorists, the bounty for the American Stasi to turn in political dissidents is sure to be too tempting to resist.
Indeed, last month Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers and the New York Times heartily celebrated the fact that an increasing number of Americans are becoming informants and turning in their neighbors and family members to the authorities in return for cash rewards.
Citing gas prices, foreclosure rates and runaway food price inflation, The Times lauded the fact that citizens are reporting on each other, ensuring “a substantial increase in Crime Stopper-related arrests and recovered property, as callers turn in neighbors, grandchildren or former boyfriends in exchange for a little cash.”
As any budding dictator will tell you, the creation of an informant society where individuals self-regulate their behavior in fear of being turned in by a citizen spy is one of the key stepping stones to tyranny. To have the media celebrate the fact that people are reporting on their neighbors and grandchildren puts the icing on the cake.

The suspects may have been hired by drug cartels to perform home invasions and assassinations in the U.S.
Police reports show that three men arrested in a Phoenix home invasion and homicide Monday may have been active members of the Mexican Army.
While on the J.D. Hayworth show, Phoenix Law Enforcement Association President Mark Spencer said that the men involved were hired by drug cartels to perform home invasions and assassinations.
The Monday morning incident at 8329 W. Cypress St. resulted in the death of the homeowner. Between 50 and 100 rounds were fired at the house.
Spencer said a police officer told him that one of the men captured said they were completely prepared to ambush Phoenix police, but ran out of ammunition.
He added that all were all dressed in military tactical gear and were armed with AR-15 assault rifles. Three other men involved in the invasion escaped.
National Guard on U.S-Mexico border will end mid-July

An upcoming deadline of July 15, when the remaining National Guard personnel on the U.S- Mexico border are due to be withdrawn, has raised fears that without them the increased drug violence in the border area could spill into the United States.
“When the Guard was posted along the frontier in 2006 to help the strapped Border Patrol, critics warned that sending soldiers would be an insult to Mexico and that innocents could get shot by troops trained for combat, not law enforcement.”
“Now those worries have given way to fears that without the Guard’s help, a bloody drug cartel war on the Mexican side will spill into the U.S. and overwhelm the Border Patrol.” Dallas Morning News
Meanwhile, conflict between Mexico’s drug cartels and law enforcement agencies continues. The Associated Press is reporting that Mexican soldiers captured at least 10 suspected members of a Tijuana-based drug cartel in a raid on a child’s baptism party in the border city.

A rising peso and an economy growing faster than the U.S. have given some Mexicans the buying power to take advantage of the housing slump in Texas, which became part of the U.S. under an 1848 treaty that ended a three-year war between the two countries.
The peso has gained 3.2 percent against the dollar since the beginning of the year. The economy, which rose 2.6 percent in the first quarter from a year ago, is expected to grow 2.6 percent this year, according to a central bank survey of 31 economists in May. The U.S. economy is forecast to grow 1.4 percent in 2008, according to a Bloomberg survey of 57 economists.
Marco Ramirez of McAllen, Texas, is among those trying to sell foreclosed Texas homes to Mexicans. Ramirez’s company, called Now! Co., has bought 32 Texas properties and has options on 88 more. His best prospects are Mexican buyers, especially in Monterrey, 150 miles from the Texas border, he said.
`Great Time to Buy’
“Many of these people have children who are studying in the U.S.,’’ Ramirez said. “They’ve been renting or leasing and now it’s a great time to buy.’’
Mexico is better known for providing the U.S. with cheap labor than investment. The U.S. is home to an estimated 12 million Mexican-born residents, about half of them living there illegally, according to the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington.
Sales of existing U.S. homes in April fell 18 percent to an annual pace of 4.89 million from 5.93 million a year ago as banks shied away from making new loans, according to the National Association of Realtors in Washington.

South American Union To Have Single Currency

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva recently revealed that the South American countries are planning for a common currency as part of the integration of the individual countries into the Union of South American Nations. This integration is patterned after the formation of the European Union, and parallels the plan for the North American Union.
The union of South American nations would create a trade block designed to be competitive with the European and North American trade blocks. Central to the formation of the union is the creation of a central bank to oversee the new common currency that would replace the currencies of the individual countries in the block. In a recent broadcast, President Lula stated that he sees the implementation of this plan as not being a fast one.
In his message, the president stressed the need to help the countries of South America that are economically weak, such as Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia. “We have to help them because the stronger the countries in South America economically are, the more tranquility, peace, democracy, trade, companies, jobs, incomes and development”, he is quoted at ((http://www.nuwireinvestor.com/articles/…) .
Another unfolding feature of the South American Union similar to that of the North American Union is its dependence on newly created infrastructure. The South American alliance will promote the cross-nation construction of railroads, highways, bridges and transmission lines that will connect the entire region resulting in smooth interaction and movement within the trading block. The NAFTA and CAFTA Superhighways epitomize the infrastructural development of the North American Union trading block.
The union plan also calls for a regional defense council, apparently the beginning of the imposition of a regional government. This council would resolve regional conflicts, promote military cooperation and allow for the regional coordination of weapons production, much as the military integration of Canada and the U.S. initiates the unification of governments in the North American Countries.
The plan to establish a new common currency for the Union of South American Nations is the latest development in the initiation of common currencies representative of multi-country trading blocks. The euro was the first trade block currency, established as part of the European Union. The amero is the name of what may be the North American Union’s counterpart to the euro, debuting after economic integration and homogenization of Mexico, the U.S. and Canada have been completed, at exchange rates that represent the lowered standard of living of the Americans and the Canadians.
Critics of the Union of South American Nations’ efforts to establish a common currency see it as playing right into the hands of the world banking cartel. The clustering and assimilation of currencies facilitates the eventual merger into a one world currency promoted by the Council on Foreign Relations and its political puppets. They see the move toward the South American Union with its single currency as easily fitting with the European Union and current efforts to establish the North American Union. Once the formation of these major trading blocks is completed, the next step would be the unification of the blocks into a one world government.
This one world government is sometimes referred to as the New World Order. The Council on Foreign Relations has openly stated that its intentions are to bring about the surrender of the sovereignty of the national independence of the U.S. with the aim of creating a one world government. The Council, referred to as CFR, has influence in all vital areas of American life and around the world. Members have run or are running the major media outlets including NBC, CBS, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and many other publications.
CFR members dominate the political world. U.S. presidents since Franklin Roosevelt have been CFR members, with the exception of Ronald Reagan. CFR members also dominate the academic world, top corporations, unions and the military. They are on the board of directors of the Federal Reserve. Barack Obama and John McCain are CFR members, as well as the Bushes and the Clintons. There are many corporate members of the CFR. CFR plans are not subject to the scrutiny, debate, or vote of the people. Discussion of the plans has been conspicuously absent from the endless debating of the presidential candidates.

A member of We Are Change L.A. was assaulted and cursed at by former White House speech writer David Frum during a book signing, according to reports.
Frum– a neo-con policy maker who is often credited with coining the phrase ’Axis of Evil’– allegedly lost his temper when he recognized Stewart Howe, of We Are Change L.A., from a previous book signing. Howe approached Frum to ask a question when Frum became angry, and then violent, reports indicate.
Frum told Howe, “The one thing I regret from our last conversation is that I didn’t say to you what my friend Christopher Hitchens said… which is, you should fuck off.” [expletive is reportedly a direct quote]
According to Howe, David Frum then got up from behind the book signing table and swung at Stewart and his camera while he was phrasing a question about the unraveling 9/11 cover-up and potential criminal charges.
Frum could be the first of former Bush Administration officials to actually get violent with reporters, though a number of mainstream media outlets have called for violence against 9/11 truthers, and at least one Bush supporter physically attacked a truther last week.
David Frum was quoted as saying, “Turn off the camera. Go away!” as he smacked the camera during the book signing event.

Howe replied “I will not go away. I will not turn off the camera. We are in public. Are you worried, perhaps, about the criminal liability of being a partner to mass murder after the fact? You know that is a real concern because the truth is coming out.”
Reportedly, David Frum swung repeatedly at the camera during this statement before members of event security separated him from Howe and sent him back to his seat. Moments later, Frum got up from his seat to assault Howe for a second time after over-hearing a discussion with the security guard regarding ’the neo-con agenda laid out in PNAC documents.’
David Frum allegedly tried to break the camera while Howe announced to the recording that “he’s assaulting me, and I have it on film.”
Frum then said, “I don’t want to be on your camera.” Stewart Howe responded, “We’re in public. I’ve just been assaulted by David Frum on film.”
Security escorted the We Are Change L.A. reporter from the event on grounds that he was obstructing the book signing, though the guard agreed that Howe had a right to free speech and that Frum had assaulted him.
Members of the book signing staff objected that he was holding up the line. Howe objected that no one was in-line and that he had asked the question in a civil and polite manner.
Members of We Are Change L.A. tried to clarify the incident with David Frum during an event the following day (April 27th) where reporters say Frum again became upset and battered their cameras.

The latest advertising campaign in Mexico from Swedish vodka maker Absolut promises to push all the right buttons south of the U.S. border, but it could ruffle a few feathers in El Norte.
The billboard and press campaign, created by advertising agency Teran\TBWA and now running in Mexico, is a colorful map depicting what the Americas might look like in an “Absolut” — i.e., perfect — world.
The U.S.-Mexico border lies where it was before the Mexican-American war of 1848 when California, as we now know it, was Mexican territory and known as Alta California.
Following the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo saw the Mexican territories of Alta California and Santa Fé de Nuevo México ceded to the United States to become modern-day California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Arizona. (Texas actually split from Mexico several years earlier to form a breakaway republic, and was voluntarily annexed by the United States in 1846.)
The campaign taps into the national pride of Mexicans, according to Favio Ucedo, creative director of leading Latino advertising agency Grupo Gallegos in the U.S.
Ucedo, who is from Argentina, said: “Mexicans talk about how the Americans stole their land, so this is their way of reclaiming it. It’s very relevant and the Mexicans will love the idea.”
But he said that were the campaign to run in the United States, it might fall flat.
“Many people aren’t going to understand it here. Americans in the East and the North or in the center of the county — I don’t know if they know much about the history.
“Probably Americans in Texas and California understand perfectly and I don’t know how they’d take it.”
Meanwhile, the campaign has been circulating on the blogs and generating strong responses from people north of the border.
“I find this ad deeply offensive, and needlessly divisive. I will now make a point of drinking other brands. And ’vodka and tonic’ is my drink,” said one visitor, called New Yorker, on MexicoReporter.com.
Reader Paul Green goes into a discussion on the blog Gateway Pundit of whether the U.S. territories ever belonged to Mexico in the first place, and the News12 Long island site invited people to boycott Absolut, with one user, called LivingSmall, writing: “If you drink Absolut vodka, you can voice your approval or disapproval of this advertising campaign with your purchases. I know I will be switching to Grey Goose or Stoli and will never have another bottle of Absolut in my house.

La-Z-Boy and Whirlpool are moving jobs to new plants in Mexico, bringing job losses to hundreds of workers in Dayton and Cleveland.
La-Z-Boy employees in Dayton were told today that the cutting and sewing operation is being moved to Mexico.
Kathy Liebmann, La-Z-Boy spokesperson, said the Dayton facility has over 2,000 employees, but she did not have a breakdown on those in cutting and sewing. A La-Z-Boy employee said it was around 750.
Ms. Liebmann said La-Z-Boy is closing a plant at Tremonton, Utah, but will keep its other plants open, including the one at Dayton. She said the 400 production jobs at the Utah plant will be spread over the other five plants.

The mainstream press frequently reports that NAFTA trade corridors are a fiction. Meanwhile, work on NAFTA superhighways continues, usually in the open for everyone to see. An example is the CANAMEX corridor. According to the CANAMEX Corridor Coalition:
Since its inception in 1995, the CANAMEX Corridor has grown to become the cornerstone for the seamless and efficient transportation of goods, services, people and information between Canada, Mexico and the United States. As the implementation of NAFTA moves toward fruition, the CANAMEX Corridor will broaden its initiatives to harvest the benefits of increased trade, tourism and economic activity within the region. [emphasis added]
The CANAMEX Coalition helpfully notes that Congress approved the corridor in the 1995 National Highway Systems Designation Act as a “High Priority Corridor.” The Act is now Public Law 104-59, and it specifies:
(26) The CANAMEX Corridor from Nogales, Arizona, through Las Vegas, Nevada, to Salt Lake City, Utah, to Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Montana, to the Canadian Border as follows:
(A) In the State of Arizona, the CANAMEX Corridor shall generally follow– (i) I-19 from Nogales to Tucson; (ii) I-10 from Tucson to Phoenix; and (iii) United States Route 93 in the vicinity of Phoenix to the Nevada Border.
(B) In the State of Nevada, the CANAMEX Corridor shall follow– (i) United States Route 93 from the Arizona Border to Las Vegas; and (ii) I-15 from Las Vegas to the Utah Border.
(C) From the Utah Border through Montana to the Canadian Border, the CANAMEX Corridor shall follow I-15.
The latest action taken to move “the implementation of NAFTA … toward fruition” was Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano’s Executive Order 2008-08. The Executive Order specifies:
The task force known as the Governor’s CANAMEX Task Force (“Task Force”) shall be continued and shall serve the purpose of coordinating statewide CANAMEX efforts and coordinating with other applicable states, provinces and nations in the development of the CANAMEX Corridor.

Could Canada’s Games be secured with help from Americans and Mexicans?
Canada, U.S. and Mexico are planning a massive joint military exercise in April 2009 “to focus on terrorist events that could affect [the] 2010 Olympics,” according to Public Safety Canada documents released to 2010 Watch via access to information.
The rehearsal, led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is code-named TOPOFF 5. Canadian troops were among the 15,000 participants involved in last October’s TOPOFF 4 in Portland, Ore., Phoenix, Ariz. and Guam.

“Exercises provide unique training opportunities to strengthen our ability to deal with potential emergencies,” said Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day in an e-mail statement responding to 24 hours’ interview request. “They are important tools to strengthen Canada’s ability to deal with real incidents.”
An undated Public Safety Canada report said up to $22.8 million was needed to fund emergency management, counter-terrorism, cyber security and critical infrastructure protection exercises, “leading to a trilateral full-scale exercise prior to the Vancouver Olympic Games in 2010, as outlined under the Security and Prosperity Partnership.”
SPP was founded in 2005 to promote economic growth and enhanced security in North America.

Homeland Enslavement Okays Virtual Fence

Despite a glitch last year in setting up the virtual border fence, the head of the Department of Homeland Security today is planning to sign off on the first section of the virtual fence across the U.S.-Mexican border, reports CNN:
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Friday was to announce approval of the fence, built by the Boeing Co. and using technology the Bush administration plans to extend to other areas of the Arizona border, as well as sections of Texas.
These projects could get under way as early as this summer, officials said.
The virtual fence is part of a national plan to secure the southwest border with physical barriers and high-tech detection capabilities intended to stop illegal immigrants on foot and drug smugglers in vehicles. As of February 8, 295 miles of fencing had been constructed.
The virtual fence already is working.
On February 13, an officer in a Tucson command center — 70 miles from the border — noticed a group of about 100 people gathered at the border. The officer notified agents on the ground and in the air. Border Patrol caught 38 of the 100 people who tried to cross illegally, and the others went back into Mexico, a Homeland Security official said.
Virtual fences do not have a great track record for permanently stopping the movement of people across porous borders, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Boeing-built technology fares better than previous efforts.

Florida Cops Use Serial Killer as Excuse to DNA Swab Drivers

Police officers in Daytona Beach are swabbing the mouths of persons of interests during traffic stops with special DNA kits in the hunt for an elusive serial killer, sources close to the investigation told Local 6.
A profiler said the serial killer is likely clean cut and probably has a wife or girlfriend.
And, the Daytona Beach police Chief, Mike Chitwood, said detectives have the killer’s DNA.
“Genetically, we know who he is,” Chitwood said. “We have DNA evidence from the murder scenes — so, we got that. That is never going to go away. And, sooner or later, we will match the DNA to the physical person and bring closure to everything that is going on.”
Agents are using the DNA kits to collect as much DNA as possible during traffic stops and special operations in hopes on making a match.
Local 6 showed agents stopping a person of interest from Canada, who gave his DNA to officers on the street using the DNA kit.
The DNA kits are also being used in prostitution stings in the area.
Chitwood said over time, modern technology will lead to the killer.
“I can tell you that we are working really, really hard,” Chitwood said. “I can tell you that there are a lot of things going on behind the scenes.”

Ron Paul Wins 80% in Arizona Straw Poll

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul won a straw poll this week held by an Arizona group representing young GOP entrepreneurs and business professionals.
The Republican Professionals Association conducted the poll this week.
Paul won the poll, with 80 percent of the vote, followed by Sen. John McCain of Arizona, with 12 percent. There were 515 votes cast, according to RPA.
McCain picked up the endorsement of the Tampa Tribune on Friday. He also has received a number of newspaper endorsements on the GOP side of the 2008 White House race.
Paul opposes the war and most government spending. He wants to dismantle the Internal Revenue Service and what he calls America’s ’empire’ abroad, including military bases and reducing foreign aid.

Governor: REAL ID good idea for Arizona

Gov. Janet Napolitano responded to concerns voiced Wednesday by a state lawmaker and the state director of the American Civil Liberties Union in reference to an agreement the governor signed last week with the Department of Homeland Security to create a new identification card.
The three-in-one card complies with the state’s driver’s license standards, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and can be used in the work eligibility process, according to Napolitano.
During a phone interview with the the Sierra Vista Herald, the governor said the card is “a good deal for Arizona.” She pointed out the card is optional.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which will take effect Jan. 31, will require U.S. residents to show proof of citizenship in order to enter the United States from Canada or Mexico. Napolitano said the card can be used in place of a passport for that purpose.
“Particularly in the southern part of our state, where a lot of people do go back and forth to Mexico all the time and a lot of people don’t have passports and don’t want to want to pay the expense of getting a passport, this will be an available option and an affordable option for them,” she said.
Also, the governor said, given legislative approval, the card will help future employees and employers comply with new state law on employer sanctions.
According to Napolitano, the card will be aligned to be compliant with the requirements of the federal REAL ID Act.
Republican Sen. Karen Johnson, of Mesa, criticized the governor for signing the agreement with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff because the final regulations on REAL ID have not been made public.
“Who is the governor to say what we are going to do? She is just one branch of our state government,” Johnson says in a press release issued Wednesday.
But, Napolitano said, “all the agreement says is once we have the regulations, we will work to make this new optional license comply ‘as soon as practicable.’ That is a very important phrase. That means there have to be regulations we agree with and there has to be federal funding associated with it.”
“This license should not rise or fall on REAL ID. It should rise or fall on is it a good idea for Arizonans, and it is,” she added.
Napolitano has committed to seeking any legislative approval that is required regarding the agreement with Chertoff.
Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the ACLU of Arizona, issued a press release Wednesday urging state lawmakers to reject efforts to introduce the new driver’s licenses. She says U.S. citizens carrying the cards will be at risk of being tracked.
“These new enhanced driver’s licenses will turn Arizonans into sitting ducks for identity thieves who’ll be able to remotely scan anyone’s electronic identity with inexpensive handheld readers that pick up data emitting from these licenses,” she says.
Napolitano said Meetze is “wrong” and has not taken the time to study the license.
She said the card has a chip, but it does not contain personal information. She said the only people who will be able to learn about a cardholder are those who can access a law enforcement database.
“It’s not as if your license is a hackable vehicle,” she said.

The US police face a new scandal after revelation that the slogan of one its academies is ‘Cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)’.
The revelation came after a photograph of the graduation program of a police academy in the state of Idaho was e-mailed anonymously to news outlets throughout the state.
It showed that the slogan, “Don’t suffer from PTSD, go out and cause it,” is printed on the academy’s graduation programs.
“It shouldn’t have been there. It was inappropriate.” said Jeff Black, the director of Idaho Police Officer Standards and Training.
Disavowing the slogan, Black said the class president was ex-military, and that the slogan “slipped in.”
According to the US Veterans Association, tens of thousands of US soldiers suffer from PTSD, which causes nightmares, flashbacks and physical symptoms.
PTSD makes sufferers feel as if they are reliving trauma, even many years later.
Man Arrested After He Fought Off Burglars

A South Orlando man got some uninvited Christmas Eve guests Monday night.
Arif Sameja walked into his south Orlando apartment to find three people he didn’t know inside.
When he tried to stop them he wound up in handcuffs.
Overnight, Arif Sameja was watching movies at a downstairs neighbor’s house when he heard a loud boom. Sameja said it sounded like it came from his apartment directly upstairs.
Sameja ran up and found his front door kicked in. He rushed back to his friends apartment and grabbed a bat as his friend called 911. When Sameja went into his apartment he found it had been ransacked. Moments later he discovered two people were hiding in the bathroom and another crouched in his closet. He soon realized he was outnumbered.
“One of the (suspects) ran out and tried to punch me,” Sameja said. “He hit me a couple of times, and I punched him in the face. He tried to run out of the apartment and I had a bat so I turned around and hit him in the back of the head.”
Deputies arrived as Sameja and one of the suspects were running down stairs.
Sameja, bat in hand, was handcuffed and put into the back of a deputy’s cruiser. By the time deputies realized they cuffed the wrong guy, the bad guys were gone. They’re still on the run.
The thieves got away with Sameja’s wallet and his laptop computer. They also had his flat screen TV, Playstation 3 and other valuables in the middle of the floor ready to go.

Homeland Security strikes deal with New York on driver’s licenses

The Bush administration and New York cut a deal Saturday to create a new generation of super-secure driver’s licenses for U.S. citizens, but also allow illegal immigrants to get a version.
New York is the fourth state to reach such an agreement on federally approved secure licenses, after Arizona, Vermont and Washington. The issue is pressing for border states, where new and tighter rules are soon to go into effect for crossings.
The deal comes about one month after New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced a plan whereby illegal immigrants with a valid foreign passport could obtain a license.
Saturday’s agreement with the Homeland Security Department will create a three-tier license system in New York. It is the largest state to sign on so far to the government’s post-Sept. 11 effort to make identification cards more secure.
Spitzer, who has faced much criticism on the issue, said the deal means New York “will usher in the most secure licensing system in the nation.”
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he was not happy that New York intended to issue IDs to illegal immigrants. But he said there was nothing he could do to stop it.
“I don’t endorse giving licenses to people who are not here legally, but federal law does allow states to make that choice,” Chertoff said.
“It’s going to be a big deal up in Buffalo, it’s going to be a big deal on the Canadian side of the border,” Chertoff said.
The governor made clear he is going forward with his plan allowing licenses for illegal immigrants. But advocates on both sides of the debate said Spitzer had caved to pressure by adopting the administration’s stance on tighter security standards for most driver’s licenses.
GOP Rep. Thomas Reynolds, who represents the Buffalo suburbs, said he was glad Washington had heeded his concerns about border identification. But he said he feared that Spitzer “is taking this state down a risky path” by giving any kind of license to illegal immigrants.
Under the compromise, New York will produce an “enhanced driver’s license” that will be as secure as a passport. It is intended for people who soon will need to meet such ID requirements, even for a short drive to Canada.
A second version of the license will meet new federal standards of the Real ID Act. That law is designed to make it much harder for illegal immigrants or would-be terrorists to obtain licenses.
A third type of license will be available to undocumented immigrants. Spitzer has said this ID will make the state more secure by bringing those people “out of the shadows” and into American society, and will lower auto insurance rates.
Those licenses will be clearly marked to show they are not valid federal ID. Officials, however, would not say whether that meant local law enforcement could use such a license as probable cause to detain someone they suspected of being in the U.S. illegally.
“Besides being a massive defeat for the governor, I can’t imagine many _ if any _ illegal immigrants coming forward to get the driver’s licenses, because they’d basically be labeled as illegal,” said New York Rep. Peter King, the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee.
New York has between 500,000 and 1 million undocumented immigrants, many of whom are driving without a license and car insurance or with fake driver’s licenses, Spitzer said in September when he announced his executive order.
The administration has not finalized standards for Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses. Spitzer said he believed the new licenses would meet those standards or come very close.
Many states say it is too expensive to comply with the law; seven of them have passed legislation opposing Real ID. Neither the governor nor Chertoff would say how much it would cost to put the system in place or who would pay for it.
Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties, said Spitzer’s move effectively revives a faltering ID program. “The governor’s stunning lack of courage is aiding the Bush administration in clamping down on civil liberties,” Lieberman said.
