Ahmadinejad to visit New York in September

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he plans on going to New York to attend the 2008 United Nations General Assembly session.

It will be President Ahmadinejad’s third trip to New York since he took office in August 2005.

During his last trip to New York in September 2007, Ahmadinejad requested to lay a wreath at the World Trade Center, the site of the September 11 attacks, to pay tribute to the victims of the attack. His bid, however, was rejected by city authorities.

In his 2007 visit, the Iranian president also proposed to meet and hold a live debate with US President George W. Bush. US officials rejected the offer, claiming the White House would only engage in direct talks after Tehran halts its nuclear program.

Washington accuses Iran of developing a military nuclear program. Tehran, however, insists its nuclear program is directed at generating electricity and is in line with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

This is while the most recent UN nuclear watchdog report concluded that there is no link between the use of nuclear material and the ’alleged studies’ of weaponization in Iran’s nuclear facilities.

In the previous US trip, Ahmadinejad was invited to New York’s Columbia University to attend a question-and-answer session during which Columbia president Lee Bollinger insulted him in his pejorative introduction of the Iranian president.
